Subject: Contact?

Message:
How do you contact the GK boss nowadays? As I remember it from sometime ago there was a
"Contact"-option in the bottom of the screen. Now it has gone, and I donīt remember the
address. Can somebody help me here?

Hi, you can go via the 'site map' at the bottom of the page, through 'customer service' bottom left.

I agree ...

Message:
with ravster , in preferring to have a CONTACT option at the bottom of most pages, rather than the change (tho having both would have been even more convenient).
I wonder why the change was made!? ...what advantage there might be to GK aor the players here by making the change; Can anyone advise about this, or speculate? ...I cannot see the advantage, myself, but am not a programmer either.

I'll speculate!

Maybe the prior way was too convenient and admin. received far too many msgs.

Not so sure...

Message:
I think apastpawn COULD be right but i don't think that that would be the complete reason for that. Is it just me or has the 'contact us' option got replaced for the 'help' option at the bottom of the page?

I just noticed earlier today ...

Message:
ravster , but I also note that the choice "HELP" now occupies the 9th position from the top on the left-sidebar menu, where it replaces the previous "F.A.Q." selection which preceded it.
[I found an old page dated June 10, 2006 where it does still say F.A.Q. there, instead. Although this does not support the idea, it seems to me that the alteration was probably recent. Anyone know for certain? Perhaps when CONTACT was removed from page bottoms!?]
* * * * * * * * *
apastpawn heheh , I wondered something similar.
Maybe we will use more time to ponder our Question now before asking; and perhaps be struck by a lightning stroke of realization; or simply come across our Answer among GK Text as we search for CONTACT mode ?!? :)

It seems like GK ordering a FAQ page to come-up for us automatically & immediately following our Click for CONTACT might cut down on some Questions too. Rather than having the player wait and wonder about getting a reply to his Question if he is not going to receive one because it is already answered in FAQ's but he does not know it.
It is not difficult for a player to fail to realize that the FAQ's are updated frequently enough to require some periodic review of them to stay up-to-date. At least I did not realize that the FAQ's 'live & grow' here at GK.

Contact/help/F.A.Q.

Message:
The contact link on the bottom of the page has been replaced by 'help' not too long ago - check some older threads gameknot.com, where 'contact us' is still available on the bottom of the page.

The F.A.Q. got replaced by 'Help' around that same time. At first, the last Question (Q43 or so) was "My question did not get answered in the F.A.Q., how do I contact GameKnot directly?" with a link to the 'Contact us' form. They removed that too...

Wow, that is unbelieveable that they don't have a "contact us" link anymore. If memory serves, you could easily find a link to contact them, then it got a bit harder to find, and now its gone completely. Hopefully this is just a temporary thing, especially since the "Contact us" service I used to get from them was very good and prompt. I would think that for $39.95 / year (one of the most expensive corresponding chess sites out there (if not the most, but worth it)), you should be able to easily reach the help desk...even the idea of "we won't respond to you if your question can be answered in the FAQs" is fine, but at least let us know that we can contact you in case of a unique or important matter. Does this surprise anyone else? They've been so good about helping out in the past....

Yes, it's a shame...

Message:
All GameKnot features have a virtual "IQ" test on them, as mentioned before; you could say that 'quality members' remain to use this site then, but on the other hand you could call this (mildly put) pretty unhandy.

Immediately in the beginning, when joining the site, you have to figure out how to start and play a game. The homepage (gameknot.com) doesn't say 'hey it's your turn to move' or anything. In fact, the whole lay-out on the front page is very unhandy, it's completely different from the 'normal' lay-out that works fine (with the menu on the left)...
And then we wonder why so many people start two games, don't move at all, and then leave the site, leaving behind 2 timeouts and an empty profile :-) They just did not notice the "my games" list and everything under that!!

GameKnot has many good features, but doesn't promote or 'praise' them - I see other websites that have a lot less to offer, but what do they do? They say 'look at how good this is, it's so good, look!' (exaggerating mode). Not that GameKnot has to go that far, but at least mentioning that there are certain features, every now and then, would be good. The forums are hidden. Did anyone know of the problems section here? Okay, now you are reading this, you might, since you've found the forums too :-) But... on these forums, most of the time us members just babble a bit, and big boss gameknot_com only comes every now and then to speak out, but... still... it's not really communicating what is happening on GameKnot - merely responding to people who complain (most of the time unjustified, but still, there is a lot of space for confusion, which makes that people start complaining earlier) :-)

And take for example the extra day thinking time you get during every Saturday night - the only time it's mentioned, is somewhere in the middle of the FAQ. Not to mention the extra days that get added to the clock around certain holiday times - nobody knows when, we just see it happening... why not list those extra days 'rules' somewhere so that everybody knows how it works - and at least put a notice somewhere when there are 'extra days' coming.

Does anybody know how 'big' of a 'company' GameKnot is nowadays? We have Master Mike, secretary 'customer support', a development team, forum moderators (who!?) and what more? Huh? How many persons are that? 1, 2, 3? I honestly have to say, I have no idea :-)

What is the development team currently working on? Probably minor errors and stuff like that, but is there any progress on the Blitz feature since the last update 4 years ago? Is there a new feature in the works again? We don't know, we won't know.

Now there's a thing going on that looks like HIDING all features - forums, customer support (still reachable though, via gameknot.com. Only there are a lot less links to get there), and that's even more of a bad thing. Although GameKnot probably has thought of it well and has its intentions... (but does not reveal them until we're complaining again!).

More open communication would do GameKnot good. Very good.

Heinzkat

PS: I know this isn't the message with arguments I've written, but the main points stand!! Communicate and do not hide!

Message:
I think you raise fair points, heinzkat. I suppose that once you get used to GK, then all these 'sign posts' might be seen as visual clutter and a nuisance. I suppose what I'm getting at is that maybe a balance has to be struck between a lot of 'Hey! Look at this!' and discreet "minimalist" functionality.

Re: The contact us. Perhaps it's connected to the recent DOS attack? If it's too easy to contact GK, it's too easy to inundate them with rubbish?

Contacting Gameknot

Message:
If you have downloaded the Gameknot toolbar you will notice a little arrow on the right of it. Click on this and you will get a drop-down menu with a number of options. Put your mouse over the one which reads Gameknot, and more options will appear to the right. The third one is Contact Us, and selecting this will bring up a box to type your message and tell you how many people are ahead of you in the queue to be answered. Hope this helps.

Stolen Password?

Message:
This is very bizarre. I have been playing on this site for well over a year with zero problems until today. In two mini tournaments that I just recently entered someone has been making moves for me remotely ( ie they have access to my password). Here is the real strange part. My opponents make the exact same counter moves to the moves been made by the person who is making my moves. The two mini tournaments are duffnut's Danish gambit, and Quintet Tourney #34. I have changed my password and have been making my own moves now. Has this ever happened before and anyway to catch this person? Thank You.

Understandable though...

Message:
and funny that it's brought up in this thread; where is explained that a (T) behind a tournament stands for 'thematic' and how it works? Although it may seem obvious for the most of us, for others it leads to panic since they think someone broke into their account to make those mysterious opening moves... ;-)

Thematic tournaments now have a little explanation when hovering over the tournament title in the open mini-tournaments list... :-)
