Subject: Emergency Postponement on Profile

Message:
Alright, so I was watching one of my opponents get close to timing out and I was wondering to myself, is he going to time out or is his emergency postponement going to kick in? I was thinking—it may be beneficial to have the emergency postponement time posted on each portfolio so both you and your opponents know whether or not it has been used. Also, if it has been used, wouldn’t it be useful to know when you are able to use it again? The emergency postponement idea was awesome, but I am not sure when I will have it again, and can’t really be certain without a great deal of detailed checking if my opponents are going to time out or just go on emergency postponement. I think it would be awesome to have this detail listed on each profile—either it is available or the date it will be available so we can all be aware and plan accordingly. I have written to Mike about this possibility, but I was wondering if you all had any thoughts on the issue.

I've never had mine kick in, so I don't know if something like this is already in place. Maybe GK could send a PM to let you know when your emergency PP kicked in & when it can be used again. Some people might prefer not to have it posted on their profile. This method would maintain privacy & could probably be automated. Just a thought...

Myself, i think your suggestion is not only a great idea but an essential one really. I have also wondered when exactly a "4 month" period would be transpired. For EG, is it the same day of the month, but 4 months later than when it was triggered? Or might it be using "30 day" months (as many businesses do) always, and so perhaps vary by a day or two? And how will we know precisely when it will "be there" unless noted Somewhere.
Just for "FYI" and everyone; I did have my Emergency PP triggered (accidentally, as I intended a 2 day planned PP but forgot to click the very last button to activate it ... so instead the Emer.PP got used). Anyway, my point is: since you raise the matter of how we could know; I just want to say I have just checked my Profile, both as "I see it" to make changes and also viewed it "as others see it". And in neither case did I note any indicator for the availability (or not) of the Emer. PP function.
[If you are counting :) ]
Please add me to those who would be glad to see this info made available, whether "publicly" to other GK players as well, or only to each player re their own status. Either way, seems much improvement to me. Or even a PM, as suggested by doc3170 , but I'd prefer to be advised ASAP of when my EMER-PP would renew (which is how i am reading DOC's suggestion!?), either at the time it was triggered, or after it just turns off ... so as to be able to plan accordingly. Rather than just be notified when it did come back.

Oh, now a bit more on the topic

Message:
I already suggested displaying a few new statistics to a personal GameKnot profile (/stats.pl?username) regarding timeouts:

1) The amount of time (days?) passed since the last timeout.
AND/OR 2) The amount of games finished since the last timeout.
3) The amount of games WON on timeout (an interesting statistic as well, I think...)

Other interesting ideas (I would find such information useful):
4) Amount of vacation days used this year/last year
... 5) Amount of time passed since the last 'emergency postponements' was used

Prettig kerstfeest!

Emergency postponement

Message:
Actually, I just used my emergency postponement. Here in the middle of the U.S. we recently had a MAJOR ice storm. Took down all most all power lines and many phone lines. I was in the dark for 10 days - no electric, no phone, no HEAT! So my postponement came and went before I ever managed to get back on line. Actually, I had already lost the game anyway so wasn't too disappointed to time out - but it was my very first time out.

Bottom line - the emergency postponement is/was a great idea and can/could be very valuable under circumstances such as I just encountered!

I think

Message:
That having the time and date of emergencies postponements on the profile is the best idea...but maybe make it an option to include it on your profile....rather than a necessity for those who think that this may be a privacy thing. However, to me, I find it annoying when I think my opponent is going to time out and his emergency postponement kicks in. I mean, it's not a big deal, but it would be nice to know if my opponent is timing out or is just going to use emergency postponement instead. At least, I need to have the next time I can use it on my profile so I am aware, but it would be beneficial to know when others have last used their EP as well.

Novelty about Emergency Postponement

Message:
At least I think it's a novelty since I haven't seen anything about yet in the forum or other places on this site.

When the emergency postponement activates it does so for 5 days and the amount is subtracted from your total amount of days left (At least that's what I think it did). If it does than here comes the novelty ... When you haven't got any vacation days left than this emergency postponement still works and will activate a 5 day postponement.

I have experienced it a few days ago which makes me the first person on gameknot I think to have used 125 vacation days in one year :-)

Yes Heinzkat ... I read that when the emergency postponement was introduced .... and it appears not to be true ...

I had used all my vacation days somewhere in the end of October because I had about 50 games going on when my life started to get too busy and chess simply didn't fit anymore. It resulted in dozens of timeouts which you can check in my past games. I thought emergency postponement was out of the question as well until to my surprise I saw it had been triggered a few days ago. You can see the message at the bottom of this post. At this point I'm still at 0 vacation days left as you can see in the pasted text below.

Only explanation I can find is or ... you do have the possibility of a emergency postponement regardless the amount of vacation days left .... Or I gained extra vacation days for some strange reason a few weeks ago which re-enabled the possibility to trigger a emergency postponement. But my guess is the first option.

You can postpone your games: now
Remaining vacation days for this year: 0

20-Dec-07, 10:26
game A 5-day emergency postponement has been triggered for your account due to one of your games being in an immediate risk of timing out. Please make sure to make your moves on time in the future or postpone your games manually, as the next emergency postponement can only be triggered after 1 year has passed from now (4 months for premium membership subscribers).

I'd like emergency postponement status to be publicly available. As nathanman22 said, it would be good to know whether your opponent is going to time out or not. Or maybe it should be left to each player to decide whether his status should be publicly available, the same way as on-line status. Anyhow, player should be able to check his own status.

Another question related to Emergency Postponemen

Message:
For those who have used it, after you have used emergency postponement, do you have to wait 10 days (5 in addition to the time off) to postpone again, or can you postpone again right after your 5 day time limit is over?

If you need more time, you can manually postpone your games for a longer period at any time during or after the emergency postponement.
