Subject: Annotation change idea: Merge View and Comments
Message: Would it be possible to be able to "merge" the View- and Comments-mode of an annotated game? When I review an annotated game I first go through it in View-mode (easier to follow) then i switch to Comment-mode to be able to read and write comments.
If a column could be added (for example to the right of the move list) you would be able to see the comments in View-mode as well as add comments to moves that the original annotator haven't commented themselves.
May I also suggest that when the game have been played at Gameknot that a link to the original game is available somewhere. In that case long variations can be played on the original board.
Best regards
Claes

Message: The comments are a bit difficult to find; i.e. finding one comment on a 4-page annotation is not so handy :-)

Even better (suggested not too long ago), the option to add alternative lines in the annotation itself.

Message: What kind of annotated game can be if the different variations are not accessible, and show just only as plain text?
There's a great difference between "annotated games" and "commented games"
I vote for variations boards, a great improvement
Also, it would be great if the annotator-commentator can point elsewhere (highlight) the main guidelines of the game (center, weak pawn(s), good & bad bishops. etc.etc...)
Just MHO...

Message: adding some 'empty' space on the right of the 'view' annotation page - next to move list - there, comments can be displayed/written. Should work fine.
Also, a bit of arrows and colours on the board would hurt no-one :-) (I have seen a bit of those in another sort of annotations/guidelines before)...

Message: ... to go straight to the comments version of the game. There you get the score of the game, each position annotated, the annotation and any appended comments. What you don't get in this version is the play-through on screen or the opportunity to vote (More often than not, I forget to vote on the annotation, but I'm not sure that's necessarily a bad thing). But I prefer to play through on my magnetic set that I usually have by me, and that allows me to play through any alternative lines that occur to me. I can spend hours exploring someone's annotated game (not everyone appreciates that, by the way).
Another slight drawback to this approach occurs when there is a long sequence of unannotated moves. It's very easy then to set up the position wrongly.
Maybe the two could be combined into one, but I suspect the screen could get a bit crowded. I like the fact that you can pop-up the comments and then pop them down again once read.
Cheers,
Ion

In the 'view' version it would be an option to show/hide them of course... if implemented :-)

Message: makes it hard to follow the game. All that flipping of the boards and unable to comment directly at moves if they were not annotated at that point prior.
Merging sounds good. All you would need is a link or highlight to click on. Might even be less memory for the site by doing away with the comment pages.
