Subject: Rodog vs Cyrano

Message:
After 94 moves we finally have a winner. Rodog won when Cyrano resigned a game that was (or at least I found it to be so) dramatic, extremely well played, double edged, often aesthetic, and above all else confusing.

Maybe I shouldn't trouble my 1680ish rated chess brain with a game as deep and complex as this one seemed to be, but I'm curious as to why the game progressed as it did.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than I could annotate it, or at least post a couple of comments?

Here's the link: game

With my rating I feel completely ill equiped to comment on this game, but one move stood out to me that seemed to change the course of the game. It sure seems to me that Cyrano made an error in giving up his bishop for a pawn at 39...Be3. Any thoughts?

Yes, it did seem like a weird move to me, too. Let's say that cyrano passes instead (I know this isn't allowed in a real game, but this 'null move' testing is great for analysis). Then follows: 40. Rg6+ Kh7 41. h6

If 41...Kg8, 42. Bc4+ followed by hxg7 looks like a killer. And otherwise, 42. hxg7+ (it's a strong discovered check by the rook all the way on h1) should be winning.

Clearly I'm not at their level of play, but I can't yet find any satisfactory responses for black on move 42 in this analysis, or 39 in the actual game. Note that 39...Be3 40. Rg6+ Kh7 and now 41. h6 looks silly because of 41...Bxh6.

So perhaps (and most likely since it's what was played) black was forced to part with the bishop for a pawn in hopes of a draw. Amazingly fascinating game, by the way. Much of the opening and middlegame had me at the edge of my seat.

I have a demo version of Rybka, and I ran it on the position after 39. Rg2. It finds 39...Be3 in less than a second, but does give white a +1.38 advantage.

And for clarity's sake:

After 39. Rg2, black to play.

White is threaten 40.Rg6+ Kh7 41.h6! with deadly attack. So 39.. Be3 is best move.If white not accept the sac, black will put his bishop on g5 and prevent white's attack. At least with 39...Be3 white is not easy to win.Other than Be3 I believe white will win quicklly.

Is this a Requiem for the Najdorf?

Message:
Probably not.

I played the same opening this last June (with a slight move order change) as Rodog and Cyrano did recently. Here is a link to my game: gameknot.com
I won playing white too; but it should have been a draw (if I remember correctly). Cyrano made an improvement for black with 15. ... a4.

I've done an extensive analysis of this part of the middle-game. I am sorry that I cannot go into more detail--but I think Cyrano was doing everything he could to avoid a draw; instead, he got himself into trouble.

Despite the general rule that pawns should take toward the center, I believe Cyrano might have done better with 18. ... bxa2+ 19. Ka1 (the King cannot take) ... Nc5 20. fxe6 Nxe6...and now White's counter-attacking pawn structure is all messed up. Also instead, 19. ... Bxa2 might have been slightly better; yet 19. ... Bb3 as played was interesting. Regardless the bishop had to be given up. It was just a question of controlling when and how White took it. Because of White's temporary sacrifice of his knight, he was forced to retake the bishop.

The remaining next few moves were basically forced, yet they lead to only one thing. As of move 21, White has a winning position regardless of how Black plays. I've tried everything that I could think of. That is why I suggest a change on either move 18. or 19. The slight change in plan might have made a significant difference. ...just my opinion.
