Message: Players want to play opponents who will not time out and with a handle like stripper what do you expect?
Heinzkat gives good advice as far as starting a game. Also if you become a paying member you will have a chance to play in leagues against some higher rated players.

What is amazing is that a lot of these people are paying members...
My guess is that they come to GK, like it, pay for it (parents' money?) and they get bored and leave.
Anyway, the point is that new members are often viewed as risky due to being prone to timeouts/leaving the site.

Message: I think the handle of stripper is not that big a deal. I really doubt people take it into consideration when deciding whether to accept a challenge or not.
I'm betting that some people are just afraid that they might lose to someone with a provisional rating, which would cause a drastic decline in their stats. I agree with heinzkat, the best approach is to use the "Start Game" feature, either accepting or offering.
Another option (though I forget whether it's available to players with less than x number of games) is to play in minitournaments. That way, people don't have the option of canceling their games with you.

Message: minis require a five-game limit... best bet is to find some other 12-1400 rated players using the "join game" link on the side, the higher the better, and get yourself established. once you've got your actual rating, you're much more likely to get games. i must confess, i'm a little unsure about playing new players in case they're better than me, my rating took a big hit when i timed out of a lot of games, i want it back to its former glory!

Message: In most CC groups players were allowed to withdraw from the group without ratings loss, as well as expected to use their real names, not stupid 'handles'.
A withdrawing player lost all their games, but there were no rating exchanges. This kept ratings more honest, and allowed the withdrawing player to return at a later date with his 'real' rating not a much lower rating. Instead, the way it is done now, either players return with a much lower than real rating which punishes his opponents, or creates a new even dumber handle and starts from scratch.

Message: <<<either players return with a much lower than real rating which punishes his opponents>>>
slightly off topic, i know, but it's nice to see that some people recognise who the real ones to be punished are from deflated ratings! i lost internet connection last year and dropped a fair few games, and as such my rating dropped 400 points to 1350. now i'm mostly playing against 1400 players, and i'm winning comfortably, picking up a lot of points and costing them many, when really i should've picked up 4 or 5 points at the most, or better still be playing 1700+ players. having said that, because my opponents are getting big point hits, they pick up more points for their next win, as there is a greater difference between them and their next opponent. so it all balances out in the end.

3/03/2008 07:10:59 [ report abuse ] | Also off topic (A little) Handles
Message: I am teaching my 9 year old nephew chess, and he has improved to the point where I thought he was ready for internet chess. I signed him up at another server site and showed him how to enter a tourney. A little while later he comes out all excited that he was playing someone with 'fart' in his name. To say the least my sister-in law was not pleased and that ended his online chess career with any site that uses handles. Can you imagine if he ran out saying he was playing with a stripper? While these handles may or may not be in error, the site itself should not allow handles like these. At least unless they do not want to have young players.

Message: it wasn't astinkyfart was it? he exists here at gk...
i don't see what the problem is... fart is hardly an offensive word. appreciated, we can't have people using swear words, but it's not like a 9-year-old is unfamiliar with the word fart. he didn't learn it here. and besides, what word would you prefer for fart? bottom burp?
how about my handle? it has innuendo. but it's been my nickname for years, why shouldn't i be able to use my nickname? i don't want to use medwards, it's dull. and what if someone has beat me to it?
i find it hard to understand why someone would stop a 9-year-old playing on a particular site because he came across the word fart. it just seems a little over-zealous to me. if he's on the internet, there's a good chance he could come across a great deal more offensive material than this. it's a word that kids find funny, and adults find normal, at least here in the uk. maybe over there in the states it's more offensive?
and here we have another issue... some words are offensive in the uk that are either acceptable in the states or completely unknown. unfortunately, this is not the place to give examples! so how will this work?
and then some names from foreign countries are extremely funny to us... there was a man called michael itchyanus... he changed it by deed poll to lloyds bank plc are *******... now his new name is not acceptable, fair enough, even though the word in question is an english swear word i've heard used on the simpsons. but his original name, well, that's his birthname, are we allowing that?

Message: Aside from being VERY IMMATURE, a handle like that is not appropriate at a family friendly site. Why are handles necessary at all? Why not just your name. Why is it necessary to hide under a fart? That is unless this is not a family friendly site, of course.

Message: The online world is not safe for a parent-child duo that shies away from the word, "fart", I'm afraid. There's nothing family unfriendly about this site. Your expectations are simply set at an unreasonable level.
What you seem to be demanding of this site is that even the mildest hint of indecency be eliminated. Why should a name like "tugger" be allowed, if it could even be construed as an inappropriate name? And of course, what about those who might have the misfortune of being born under a family name like "Fart" or "Stripper"? The problem with censorship is that you would have to draw a line somewhere, and there would probably be discontent from both sides of that line anyway.
To answer one of your questions, the reason that some people do not use their name as their handle is because there are those who enjoy privacy. People are entitled to that right.
I say this with absolutely no intent to be rude, but if you feel your nephew is not old enough to handle some of the screen names seen on this site, then perhaps he should be kept offline until his mother deems him capable of such exposure. Gameknot is among the least of your worries online.

Message: I have two suggestions for you.
First, if it really bothers you, ask GK to allow you to change your handle. You're a paying member and if you explain the error this soon into your membership, maybe they'll help.
Second, as long as you have that handle, I have a suggestion guaranteed to get you plenty of games. Replace your fish photo with a photo of a very attractive young woman (nothing racy, just attractive) and delete the "male" reference in your profile. I guarantee you you'll have plenty of folks willing to play you. Once you've got your real rating established, you can go back to being a sportsman. ws

3/05/2008 02:33:48 [ report abuse ] | Changing handle not possible
Message: I had once the same problem as stripper. My handler was mary875 and some people though I was called Mary, thus that I was a woman. After several displaced comments from some of my opponents (which shows it might be difficult to be a woman here), I decided to change my handle and contacted GK. They just answered it was not possible and that I should create a new account at the end of my subscription period and inform me that I had changed of handle...
