Subject: Not quite so blitz please?
Message: The blitz game feature is great for if you want a real-time game, but I do find 10 minutes is far too short for a meaningful game of any decent standard.
Please could we have 20 minute and 30 minute options? It must only be a simple matter of programming! :-)
Cheers
Tony

Message: Blitz games at ten minutes are fine for some, but I find the time to be too short. My game (such as it is) goes totally to pieces. I just don't bother even going into blitz now. As you suggest, 20 or 30 minutes would be ideal. Keep the 10 minute options for those that prefer it, but also add other options for those of us who find 10 minutes too restrictive.

Message: Blitz doesn't seem to get updated much. I've noticed that 7 minutes is the lowest amount of time where I still play reasonably.

Message: i'd like to see improvements on the blitz section, but i don't think it will happen for a while, it's just not a priority for gk... they are concentrating more on improving other areas of the site. i'm not that fussed really, i go on blitz fairly often, but if i wanted a longer game then there are plenty of sites that are better for real time blitz. as far as cc is concerned gk have the best site, so i'm not going anywhere.

Message: We had a bit of a discussion recently about the blitz interface here at Gameknot in this thread gameknot.com
May be worth a look.

Message: I must say that although I play about 1 class weaker in blitz than I do OTB (according my average internet blitz ratings, anyway), and although I do find that mildly annoying, I try not to take blitz too seriously.
An expert level player once explained to me that he looks at blitz not as serious competition, but almost like batting practice for openings. You can try something out twenty or thirty times to see if it suits you in an atmosphere that is almost totally informal. If it's a good fit for you, you can then put some work in to make a weapon for more serious competition. If it doesn't, you throw it away.
I kind of liked that analogy. The only problem is that if you spend too much time playing around in the batting cage, you can find yourself horribly unprepared for legitimate competition. I know that I've picked up a LOT of bad habits in my blitz days (which I really am trying to put behind me).

Message: i don't take blitz seriously, i just see it as a quick game when i'm bored. i much prefer cc chess, as the ability to analyse means the quality of chess is much higher, for both players. there are mating traps i've found playing cc that i would never have found in a blitz game. i do like the fact that blitz games are unrated, as it does indeed mean it is informal. and yes, opening lines can be practised. i've been toying with this one, as white...
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. d4 exd4
4. c3 dxc3
5. Bc4 cxb2
6. Bxb2...
a two pawn gambit for a massive development advantage. i'm not sure how sound this opening is in cc play, i haven't really tried it yet. i've tried a similar opening against sicilian, but the e-pawn can block the white bishop's path to f7, which to me weakens the attack considerably. usually i win if the second pawn is taken, but not if it's only one.

Message: I nearly always play a Semi-Danish/Goring Gambit by transposition from a Center Game, in blitz. It does very, very well. It looks like you are playing a Scotch transposing to a full Danish Gambit.
All that development does look scary and often makes BL use a lot of time early in the game. However, I think you will find that most often in the early game, the QB is actually better on its home diagonal from c1, rather than the Bxb2 diagonal. At least insofar as scoring the quick knock-outs. (Sending you a couple interesting traps for that line in case you want to give it a try too :) If you find it to be otherwise, I'd enjoy seeing the game. I could be missing something. There is a lot of finesse, traps & zwishenzugs to this and associated opening lines~!
I feel there is some advantage in playing this move order:
1.e4 e5 2.d4~! ed4 3.Nf3 for EG 3...d5(?!) is usually a giveback towards equality, but not vs this move order -->4.Qxd4 exe4 5.Qxd8 Kxd8 6.Ng5 with advantage to WT .
BL seems to have two attempts to really test WT. First he can play 2....Nf6 going into the Peterson Defense or for a Petroff position. Or secondly a Max Lange setup as
in this Marshall game. Incidentally, the first note to this game claiming ...d6 can hold the extra pawn is incorrect ... or at least is true only for a few more moves.

The anti-Sicilian you are playing, seems to be a Smith-Morra (AKA just "Morra") Gambit. David C. Taylor used it in the 1980's towards winning a USA postal championship, the USCCC ... for one source of games. Tho I believe he would play Nxc3 recapture rather than gambiting the b pawn as well.
I think you may find This very interesting tho; the Scandinavian Defense has a Gambit line AS BLACK that will give you play Very Similar to Goring/Danish Gambits WT side play. Like this:
1.e4 d5 2.ed5 Nf6 3.c4?! c6! 4.dc6 Nc6 [OR 4 ... e5!? 5.cxb2 Bxb2 ...Etc.! You like it?! :)) ]
....and BL usually ends up putting his pieces much as in the Danish. ...e5 ....Bc5 ...Qb6 {sometimes Qd4}

Message: several blitz sites.I'm not sure if i can mention the names of the sites in the forums, but they are all major sites, including pay blitz sites.Either way, what i have noticed is that it is just the opposite! The most popular time controls are not 15,20,25,30 minutes ect.,...they are actually 5 minutes!Of 5 minutes,I have noticed by popularity players usually also include a 5 second gain per move bonus.
Also, very popular on atleast 2 major blitz sites i belong to are 1 minute lightning.
I myself play alot of 5 minute blitz with 0 gain bonus.
Blitz and rapid chess and lightning chess are what they are....they will never replace longer time controls and a deeper thinking process like a 15 minute or 20 minute game, but I find the 5 minute time very challenging, exciting, nice and quick and keeps me sharp and awake!Just trying to mate my opponent in 5 minutes even if I have managed to capture his queen,is not as easy as one may think ad i have timed out on several occassions.
Either way,it would be nice to see a wide range of options one day from 1 minute to 30 minutes time controls to satisfy all tastes!

Message: funny, i have played a gambit as black similar to what you mention...
1. e4 d5
2. exd5 Nf3
3. c5?!...
i find white trying to hold the pawn will hamper his pieces, while i can look for a winning attack on the kingside. again, it's just something i try in blitz, with mixed success.
the only thing i don't like about blitz here is one cannot analyse the game afterwards, it would be very nice to see a moves list on the side that can be copy/pasted.
