Subject: Ignore List
Message: Okay, I just checked my ignore list, and although it doesn't look that large, there are about 80 people on it. I tried to sort out how so many people ended up there, and I remembered that >80% did end there because of their behaviour in the Blitz area. Besides Blitz, forum (mis)conduct takes the second place in numbers.
It still seems an awful lot to me, so I wonder how many players you ignore, and why? Or do you stand above this?

Message: Hi Rally, That is so similar to my own case. I think the most I've had is 40. Maybe 20 now. As you say, mainly blitz related. But I weed mine down periodically by a simple method. If I can no longer remember why they are on it, I remove them. Of course that will leave a good handful who will Never get off, since they managed to be very memorable }B-))
(PS// I try to keep my ignores shorter than my buddies too :)

Message: Does it have an impact on the matching in Blitz (the program disables matching with those players)? If not then why bother with it?
I only have 3 people there.
What happened? I opened a game called "Evans Gambit Accepted", wrote a comment IN GAME that this is an Evans game and put in conditional moves. All 3 completely ignored that, so I had to cancel the game 3 times and do it all over again (open/write/conditional moves).
So they are now in the ignore list and that status is permanent due to the fact that extreme stupidity is not curable, and I have zero inclination to teach basic manners :)

Message: I've only ignored two players ever. One was a player who repeatedly insulted me during a game because I was in the Intermediate section of a GK tournament when my rating was right around 1500. He was accusing me of being a bottom feeder, despite my insistence that I was fully within the rules.
The other was somebody who was on a team of mine that kept sending me (and other members of the team) strange messages in Norwegian.
By the way, marin, it may well be that those players simply don't speak English. There are a lot of foreign players on GK. Whenever I set up games where I request a specific opening but the incorrect opening is played, I keep in mind that that might be the case.

Message: At this moment I don't have anyone on my ignore list. When I was nonpaying member, I put on ignore one player that signed up to the fast tournament I played, and than waited for the last moment to move. I asked him why he joined fast tourney if he needs so much time, and he answered that he doesn't care what other people think... The other player that was on my ignore list was a guy that keeps joining tournaments and than lets all games time out. After I saw that there is to much guys like that to keep on ignore, I gave up and cleared my list

Message: Marinvukusic :Right, you can still be paired with them in blitz (also tournaments I believe, not sure). But it does have significant impact ... It FEELS GOOD~! It is like those elevator buttons that say CLOSE DOORS... they never do, but it passes the time :)

Message: What exactly does the ignore list filter? Can you still read forum posts by people on your ignore list? Does it prevent them accepting public game offers you've put out? Or does it simply block personal messages?
Mine is empty... although, like most people it seems, I've met people in blitz that might belong there.

3/18/2008 19:18:22 [ report abuse ] | My list
Message: is in my head. There is only one fellow on it, but I'll remember him. He was ahead in a game and sure to win, so rather than drag the game on, I made a move that would give him mate in one, told him about it and said thanks for the game. So he took a rook, instead. So I moved a pawn, leaving the mate available. He took another piece, ignoring the mate again. So I resigned, no note, no anything, and pushed the button rather hard as I did so. And put him on my mental 'ignore' list.

Message: My list is in better shape than I thought. Down to 14 and notice that 4 of those at sometime since had accounts closed anyway ... with no games remaining. Looks safe to take it down to 10.

Message: Speaking English has nothing to do with it. "Evans Gambit" is a known opening and certainly all players above 2000 (which was the limit for joining) can understand what that title means.

3/19/2008 11:56:35 [ report abuse ] | I know one effect...
Message: ... of the Ignore List. I happen to be on someone's. He took umbrage at my commenting on a game he had annotated. I don't recall that he had any specific objection to the comments as such except that he took the view that I was tearing his annotation to pieces, or something. He also sent me a p.m. It was when I responded to this p.m. that I found I was on his Ignore List. So he never got my reply.
I do hope the players of the game understood what I was saying, even if the annotator didn't.
Cheers,
Ion

3/19/2008 12:52:52 [ report abuse ] | Lack of experience on Ion's part IMHO
Message: I am amazed that doesn't happen more often. Since we all know Ion likes to comment on annotations rather objectively, the law of large numbers is in effect - skepdic.com
Objective annotation is no way to make friends Ion :)
Fortunately I am here and have the time to help out!
For future reference, sucking up to the annotator is done as follows (we will assume that the annotator won the game):
1. Put exclamation marks ("!!", "!" or "!?") on no less than 25% of annotator's moves, starting from the 3rd move.
2. If any of his moves are obviously bad, it is obligatory to put either "!!" or "!?" next to it (even if it breaks the first rule!). Here is the important part - praise the annotator for bravery in executing a cunning psychological ploy against the unfortunate victim. Compare him to Lasker just to be on the safe side :)
3. Avoid the common mistake of putting too many negative comments on the play of the loser (or you risk getting on HIS ignore list, which defeats the purpose). If anything give him a few compliments also (30% of moves is sufficient for the lazy bugger who did not bother to annotate the game) - this way the marvelous achievement of the annotator is further emphasized.
You will be on a few dozens of buddy lists in no time :)

3/19/2008 13:03:18 [ report abuse ] | Clarification of rules
Message: Rule 1: There is no maximum on number of moves with exclamation marks. However 100% is slightly too obvious.
Rule 2: First 2 moves are included in the rule. For example after 1.f4, e6; 2.g4 the correct annotation is "!! A brilliant move, worthy of highest praise. Prepares the kingside attack that proved fatal for Black at move 27."
Rule 3: 30% is the maximum here, but of course make sure that the annotator gets more praises than the opponent.

kansaspatzer, I wish you had kept some of those messages, then I could let you know their bearings, danish and norwegish is not the same, but very alike, perhaps a little like spanish and italien, I don't know. Just to find out if he was insulting you and you wouldn't know about it.
Perhaps it would be fun/educational to find out whose lists you are on, or maybe it would just be adding fuel to the fire somehow

It's too bad tho, because I've been pondering the matter, and wonder; just how do you know if someone IS IGNORE'g you ... if you never pay any attention to them anyway? From what I have heard, you would never know you were being IGNOREd unless you tried to CHALLENGE or PM them !?
***
This must be a bit distressing if someone is really intent upon Ignoring us, and we don't know they are Doing It?! I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, if they are REALLY intent on giving me the Big-"I". It seems like they should send a courtesy note or something to tell me about it, so it can be properly appreciated.
***
I mean, think of the Huff it would put you in if you were busy ignoring someone and they just kept talking to you in the Forums, so you would have to know then that they didn't know, and it must be quite frustrating ...which is a major cause of stress ... which can lead to physical illness. Not to mention the mental duress. And the IgnorED does not even know they are slowly killing somebody :(
***
And I presume that such person would not face any CONSEQUENCE from GK, such as loss of Forum Posting Privleges ...which would happen if they KNEW they were being ignored and 'tried to bypass it using the forums'.
[...a para-phrase of the old Rule, or Procedure, whichever it is ]
