Subject: Family Memebership

Message:
Hello,
I have paid membership, as I want to use this site to keep in touch with my children. As I now work in Singapore, and they live in the UK - I hoped this was the best way of doing it with the time difference.
I note that as a "free member" we could not play on the same computer. However I have just realised that they will be free members playing on the same computer - but different to mine.

If a promise that they will only play me - until they get the bug them selves - will you allow them to play of the same computer? They are not that into chess at the moment.

Regards
paulevans

i think your kids will be just fine if there is just two or three playing on the same computer. gk are obviously aware that some free members eventually become paying members, so there's no reason for them to kick up a fuss unless they believe that the same person is using more than one account. it might be an idea to suggest your kids don't play each other, simply as that might be misinterpreted as rating manipulation.

if you're still in doubt, i suggest you contact gk directly by taking this link...

Contacting gameknot_com directly is probably the best way to get a concrete answer. The best anyone here can do is speculate.

My understanding of the regulation of the "1 computer, 1 person" limit on free accounts is that it's done automatically through a system. That in of itself makes it unlikely that they'll make an exception. Personal experience tells me that the limit is pretty strictly enforced, since I logged in on my dad's computer one vacation and am still unable to utilize my account for free even today (despite his account since being removed). You may wind up being stuck having to pay for their access.

There are probably ways around the system. I'm fairly certain that if they used different browsers and logged out between sessions, it would confound the system. Proxy servers could also do the trick, though that's a hassle and there's a chance that the webmaster isn't a big fan of them.

Another alternative is to have your kids share the account, and have an honor system where they don't access the other sibling's game with you. Of course, that depends on no one being sneaky, but anything's possible, right? :D

i think one way around it would be to log in to your account just once from the uk based computer before you actually get going with any games. this way, you, a paying member, will share a computer with your children, even though you actually use a computer on the other side of the world! i'm certain this would work, simply because when my membership expired recently, i was suddenly sharing a computer with my brother again, despite him not using the computer at my house since i moved here, and despite the fact he hadn't logged in for months! and even though there were two free accounts on one computer, i had no problems with gk. i'm paying again now, so i don't share a computer with him again. it's a strange system.

Am I reading correct?

Message:
Keeping in touch with your children is not worth $7.00 a month each? Paid members can use the same computer.

$7/mo

Message:
I do not pay a fee to communicate with my parents, so I don't see why this user should feel pressured to pay solely for the threat of communication being cut off.

The advice that tugger gave is pretty intriguing. I think he's right that it would probably work.

This is a chess site, not a communication site. If someone wants to use it for purposes other than it is designed they must follow the rules.

I do not see the point in being rude towards someone who is asking a simple question. Not everyone shares your opinion about the purpose of this site.

Since you have made it clear that this is not a site meant for communication, however, it begs the question of why you're posting on this community forum.

I just called Alltel

Message:
I explained I needed five cel phones, one each for my mom, dad my two brothers and myself. I want them for free and with unlimited minutes because they will only be used to keep in touch with my family. I promised them I would not use them for any other calls....Guess what they said :) :) :)

The comparison doesn't really make sense, considering that Gameknot offers chess playing coupled with overseas communication for free. Alltel has never made such an offer.

This user is simply inquiring how Gameknot's offer can be maintained. It's a reasonable question, as far as I see it.

Use VoIP for free communication

Message:
If you have computers also in Singapore and in the UK, why you just don't use Skype ( www.skype.com ) or something like that for free communication, group calls, or group chats?

Why not just emails to keep in touch. This person was just asking a good question. There was no need for anyone to jump down his throat.

As I understand this thread, paulevans wants to play chess with his children. If he wanted only to talk with them, he would probably really use e-mails. But it actually doesn't matter. This man asked a simple question and I really can't understand why some members feel the need to be smartasses.

lturner: how old are you? Either you're a child, or you're acting childishly

Please review the reasons for this 'personal attack' too.

Thank you.

I've been asked to comment on this.

We (i.e. GameKnot staff) have no reasonable way of monitoring every single post, so we rely on you (i.e. users) to submit complaints via "report abuse" link. All complaints are reviewed and an appropriate action is taken in each case.

I've looked at the recent submitted complaints and the post by "munja100" and the suspension of the forum posting privileges is 100% correct -- the post did contain a personal attack, which is against the forum posting rules.

Please note, that we do not take sides, or judge who is right and who is wrong (nor would it be right for us to do so), we just make sure that the discussions here and strictly within the posted rules. Additionally, no matter what the other person said, or how he or she behaved -- it does not give anyone the right to break the rules themselves. At least not without consequences. In other words, if a post is reported (no matter by whom) and it does violate the rules, we have an obligation to take action. I really believe you would not expect any less from us.

Personally, I'm surprised that it seems many of you here are not familiar with the troll phenomenon on the Internet yet. And that the best way to deal with them is to never reply and report the posts to be dealt with by the forum moderators instead. And yes, lturner was suspended from posting as well, but because it wasn't from one of you reporting his posts, there is no notice of it in the forum.

i'll make one more post to thank gk for at least sticking their neck out and giving us an explanation. i'm not sure whether it's in response to my message, as i've had no personal response, but nonetheless i'm pleased the matter has not been ignored. i'm never happy to see someone banned from posting, but it is refreshing to see that gk will assess the situation and make the right decision.

i'm still not happy about the voting system, it's too easy to abuse, and not a fair way of sorting these things out. but i don't think gk are in any hurry to change it, and that's entirely their decision. unless there are changes made, i'm staying in the clubs, but i can't see gk being concerned about what i do.

thanks to those who support my position on this one, and sorry to those who think it's something we can do without.

matt.
