That has been discussed here recently too, and the best answer I heard was that maybe it is because new members would get to know GK a little better without the link before starting to ask questions in the forum that they would otherwise find out along the way.
But I think it should be there all the time, then if above is the reason: You can't post in the forum the first say six weeks?

It was "hidden" at the same time the Social forum was ended. I'm not sure what one had to do with the other but I agree it should be made prominent on the main menu.

I hear it is because some people were being UnSociable there!~
And it became more of an issue than GK wished to deal with having.
