Subject: Stealing accounts

Message:
i had had my account stolen by some imposter! i have managed to retrieve it back just to find out that the person sent the following messege to everyone on my team:

'Hello, team!

You really are a bunch of idiots, why did you time out on so many games - you cost us a good position in the team ladder - if any of you choose to leave the team, please do so - I am fed up with most of you except aruisa.

The April Player of the month for the 4th month running is ... ravster! Congrats!
See you all on other teams.
Ravi'

This has upset me a LOT. team morale could not be worse. one player has left the team along with an unpleasent note. i don't know how many people have placed me on my ignore list (nor i want to know).

What shall i do?! i am quite worried about the outcome of this!

Ravi

PS: This might be in the wrong thread...

A good start is to change your password, as well as the password to whatever email address is linked to your account. It might be worth checking which email address is linked to your Gameknot account, too, since it seems only logical to set up a way back in.

As far as the damage done, I'm not sure what to say. Sending apologies is probably a good start, but if people put you on ignore there isn't all that much you can do.

The best thing to do is figure out how you managed to get your account hijacked, and make sure you never fall for it again.

If it's any consolation, ravster , if my captain sent me a message like that, I would know pretty much instantly that something was amiss.

On top of what chessnovice advised, I would also suggest reporting the matter to GK and perhaps putting a temporary message of explanation in your profile.

Bw,

Tim.

1) Are you sure you haven't been drinking?
2) Look at what time the team message has been sent (via messages... sent messages on top of the page)
3) gameknot_com can probably trace down the IP number from which the message has been sent, and maybe link it to another GK account (!?).
4) Any siblings?
5) See above for other 'hints'.

Perhaps this might help too [along with the e-mail address information in your profile]

Simple explanation

Message:
If you have auto-login (like I do) then main suspects are from your household. If you are really 12 years old and have a sister/brother around your age - I would look no further :) prankster friends are also likely candidates

thank you...

Message:
thank you all for your views on this. i appreciate it :)

1) chessnovice , changing my password was the first thing i did when i got into my account. i have also changed the e-mail address to be incredibly safe. i also sended an apology to everyone on the team about the messege. asked them to mail to see if they forgive me (and also to see how many people put me on my ignore list due to that).

2) tim_b , thanks for your consolation. i hope that most of my team mates agree with you... i did mail the webmaster when i knew someone stole my account, asking them the password for my account.

3) heinzkat , i am 12 years old. i don't drink at all. i don't even like the taste of alchahol. by looking at the sent messeges was the way i found out 'i' sent this rude messege. the time i sent the messege to GK was when my account was stolen and when i could not acess it. i have a brother but he HATES chess. he does not even know i play online chess.
gameknot.com this was the way i found out that my account must have been stolen. i requested for my password and it did not arrive at my mailbox. then i typed my e-mail in the box, it said the e-mail could not be found. that is when i felt something fishy was happening.

4) marinvukusic , maybe prankster friends are the candidates, but it is still the question on how my password was discovered.

today i asked to send the password, and it was sent to my mailbox (?!) however, the password i had before and the password i had sent were nearly exact; just missing one letter. the person must have got onto this account, wrecked havoc then reset my password to normal (and my e-mail). i also found that the person sighned me up to the 45th GK tourney, but on expert section!

Message:
You didn't understand me. I have "remember me" option active, so the site does not ask me for the password. That means anyone can login to the GK and then do some mischief.

Of course none of my family/friends would do that, but when they were 12 they were probably less trustworthy :P so if you have the same setup like I do then the password was never necessary.
