Subject: personal database
Message: it is a very nice option, but it would be even better if you could distinguish your games as white and black. than it is easier to analyse your opening play

Message: It's an option I would like to see introduced.

Message: I had that same thought several times before as well. It would be nice to have the option to show only you playing as white, black or both.

4/27/2008 16:08:43 [ report abuse ] | new and improved db!?
Message: Well, it's certainly nice to be able to use the option you suggested, wuzzle.
I have mixed feelings about the single 1600+ gk db, though - maybe because
I'm a lowish rated player.

Message: Yeah, I was gonna comment here about the update on the database. While it isn't an update relating to the personal database, I'm really liking the addition of non-GK database games.
Nice update!

Message: Should have added that the new "World" part of the db should
be an excellent addition - thanks, gk.

4/27/2008 16:15:30 [ report abuse ] | correcting myself
Message: Actually, it looks like they did add Personal Databases divided by White and Black (among a great deal of unmentioned aesthetic changes). If you hover over the options (Gameknot games, World games, Personal/W, Personal/B), it appears that the author's request has been heard.
Doesn't show me any games of mine when I select that option, though. I wonder if we have to re-request our personal databases...

Message: Chessnovice; I believe the personal database system has been updated. You are able to select personal/w (personal games as white) and personal/b (personal games as black) from the drop down-list.

Message: Interesting update indeed, and yes you'll have to request your personal database again (I just did it and it has been completed before I was finished writing this message). A few things that come to mind immediately are that
1) you can't use the simple 'Backspace' anymore to go to a previous position
2) you can't let it automatically search for the latest position that is still known in the DB
3) there used to be a FEN string for the position under the DB board, which was quite handy for side reference, plus the name of the opening (which is missing now too)
4) also, you cannot play out a 'World' game at the moment.
"This database contains 732,129 chess games played by various chess players throughout the world."
Just being curious, what's the source, who compiled all the games into this DB?

4/28/2008 00:18:14 [ report abuse ] | I agree with chessnovice above
Message: Plus, it would be nice if the missing functionality of the old version could be improved; you can select moves on the board now (quite an improvement), but when the move isn't one of the moves listed, you get the message 'Move not found in the database...', instead it would be good if the move still is allowed to be made, after which you can manually search for positions that are in the database via a different move order. Just saying...

Message: Look better, I think the update request option can be found by moving your mouse over the name of the current database above the board... if I'm correct.

4/28/2008 01:18:53 [ report abuse ] | Note...
Message: that games that ended in checkmate seem to be included now - at least, I found a few games that listed the mating move. Games with a 'twofold repetition' still lead to 'loops' without end.

Message: I fear they still have some tweaking todo ... no worries, I'm sure they will do so in the next couple of days/weeks.
We have seen it in the past with other improvements. A bit shaky in the beginning but with some bugfixes and additional improvement everything mostly works out fine.
Keep it up Gameknot ....
