Subject: Incorrect Move

Message:
Hello,
In my game against jackhyland999 (gameknot.com) after my move 9 (pawn e2-e4) my opponent beat it like it was on e3!
Is it normal for this site?
Does anybody saw something like this before?

Thanks in advance for your comments.
Dmytry.

No Mistake

Message:
HI, there has not been any mistake. It is not just this site which allows that capture. It is a basic rule of Chess, and is called capturing "En Passant", which is French meaning "In Passing". It occurs whenever your opponent has one of his pawns on your fourth rank and you try to move one of your adjacent pawns past it by moving it two squares, instead of only one. At that time your opponent gets the option to capture that pawn as if it had only moved one square. He only has that choice on the first move after you pass him tho. If he does not take then, he cannot do it later.
You can find more about this in any complete set of Chess rules, such as those used by FIDE. Seeing Wikipedia under Chess/En Passant is another good idea.

The rule helps to keep the position from getting too blockaded with pawns, and also stops pawns from running past each other in the endgame when they are trying to Queen.

en.wikipedia.org

Read it and check the links about "an passant" and "castling".
