Subject: How come a friend can't reinstate his game?
Message: A friend of mine was playing a game here on Gameknot but unfortunately timed-out. He thought of reinstating the game but to our surprise there was no [R] after the game.
In the rules I have found 'If there's no (R) symbol present, that means the game cannot be reinstated.' but this doesn't explain in what situation you can't reinstate a game.
All the timeouts I have had resulted in games with [R] behind it so I'm puzzled why my friend doesn't get to reinstate his game.
These are the players of that game tduvelke ; agrendal ... I can't give the board-number because it appears to be a private game ... Maybe that's the reason? Any help on this?

Message: I think it has to do with the fact that tduvelke has a provisional rating. Reinstating is probably not permitted on either side for such players, because it could potentially contribute to high-scale rating manipulation. Games against tduvelk (and even potentially against agrendel, who has only played 8 games) will probably not show reinstatement options until the 20th game played or so.

Message: But that would be a shame since those players are not concerned about their rating here at all .... Maybe I could ask Gameknot to reinstate that 1 game manually so they can finish their game.

Message: I haven't known GK to make very many exceptions. I think that if they are determined to play the game through, maybe they can coordinate and re-play the series of moves leading up to the position before the time out. Not the most ethical suggestion, I admit, but it's probably an option.

Message: manually reinstate the position does not seem to be unethical here imo, as to me it does not look considerably different than the concept of a preselected position being explored as is done in a Thematic Mini-Tournament. Tho if such a position were too one-sided and therefore of a predictably one-sided frequency of outcome, were it to be played out multiple times; perhaps it would need be seen in a different light in regards to manipulation potential.

But also there has been some precedent at GK involving game outcomes which may be undeserved, such as someone resigning (probably due to factors unrelated to position, such as personal circumstances, etc) a favorable or non-losing position; to not be considered manipulation when restricted to few or isolated incidence. [Based upon my understanding of some past forum comments I have seen from Gameknot_com, which appeared to confirm a player's right to Resign any particular single game. ]

Of course, I might be wrong . . . !? }8-)
