Subject: Postponements

Message:
Can someone explain the rules of postponement to me? I thought that if I cancelled a postponement once it had started (like, in this case, when I wasn't sure if I'd have access to the internet but it turns out I have), then it would actually be cancelled. Turns out that I still have the full amount of days left to make my move but more importantly, I can't postpone my games again for ages.

I've had a quick look at the FAQs for the rules on this, but can't find anything (probably just blind, some of my recent games would support this theory!).

Cheers
W

Sorry - I was right.... I was being blind. Rules are quite clear, just ignore me.

This can be correct; i.e. if you postpone your games for 30 days, but immediately cancel the postponement, you postpone again after no less than 44 days, if I understand the rules correctly.

Actually, there is something funny going on. All but 1 of my games are showing the 'Cancel Postponement' link. I find it hard to believe that since postponing my game, 12 of my opponents have also postponed their games AND then made at least 5 moves each.

I've cleared my vacation flag - surely I don't have to cancel the postponement of all my games as well? And even if I did (for some reason) - why is just one of my games different?

How do I alert GK to this anomoly?

You haven't understood all finesses of a postponement. Neither have I. But I do know, that after clearing your vacation flag in your preferences, you'll have to manually cancel the postponement in all games that are left. Probably the clock of the one game that isn't showing 'cancel postponement' is already below the 3 days (for example) that you have per move, or your opponent has postponed as well.

15d vs. 14d 22h

You can't cancel the postponement here because the time is already under the maximum of time you can have. There cannot be extracted any time - if it had been 15d vs. 16d22h (random) you would have had the option to cancel the postponement, and the clock would have been set to 15d.

Do all my opponents also get the 'Cancel Postponement' link? Because the presence of the link implies that I'm cheating, trying to get away with making moves while a postponement is in effect. Surely resetting my Vacation flag should also cancel the postponement on all my current games?

Is there any advantage in cancelling the postponement in my own games? Will it allow me to postpone again any sooner? (I'm thinking of the UK public holiday coming up at the end of May - I'm going away for a few days)

In fact if I click on the 'Cancel Postponement' link I get the message, "If you believe that the postponement was unjustified and was meant to stall the game, you can cancel it and restore the original time control for the game."

Well I'm not trying to stall the game - I cancelled my vacation flag and don't understand why my postponements aren't cancelled also. After all, that's the point of cancelling the vacation flag, surely?

Postponements

Message:
Same thing happened to me. I thought, "Come on, surely everyone can't have gone on holidays." For some reason the 'cancel postponement' button, doesn't. You have to go through each game and cancel it. I'm glad I don't play dozens of games at a time.

Q45: I have removed the vacation flag from my account, but some of my games are still postponed, why?

A: Removing the vacation flag from your account does not automatically cancel the postponement for all your games. It is actually not recommended to cancel the postponements for your own games as your opponents might already be counting on using the extra time. Please simply continue making your moves normally and the original time control will be restored for all your games once the original postponement period is over.

I was confused by this once myself. We had a severe ice storm predicted so I postponed my games. The storm missed us so I cancelled the postponement and was surprised to see that my games still had the extra time added to it, even though the postponement was no longer in effect. However it was pointed out to me that my opponents, upon seeing the postponement might have counted on the extra time and simply ignored my game to concentrate on his other games. If, for example, one postpones for 14 days his opponent might say "OK - I have two weeks to not worry about this game." Then if one cancels after only one day, if the time is set back to the original time restraints, 3 days for example, his opponent might not even notice because he's expecting to have his full 2 weeks left on the game. Therefore the opponent might risk timing out or having his one time emergency postponement kick in without even realizing that he no longer had the full postponement time.
I think the system works well as is. Just continuing playing and the time restraint will eventually reset itself.

But why is the rule like this?

Message:
Sorry to open up this thread again.

The rule is: if you postpone your games, you will not be able to postpone them again for 14 days after the postponement period is over; if the postponement is for less than 2 weeks, the "waiting" period will be equal to your postponement time (i.e. if you postpone your games for 5 days, you will not be able to postpone again for 5 days after the postponement period is over, or 10 days total);

Forgive if it was answered earlier on the forums, but why do we have that waiting period?
Postponing games is when non-chess events in life take over, right? Take the icestorm example. You postpone for 3 days, hell freezes over, then you play 1 day and another storm comes up. And now you can't postpone again? What is the purpose of this rule?

Another one that was posted and happens to me often is when you are not sure if you will have internet access on a trip, so you postpone, turns out that you do have access, so you cancel and play. Then you travel back and can't postpone because you are in the 'waiting time'. Waiting for what?? Why this rule???

Otherwise one could postpone for 120 days straight at the third semester of a year (plus the first semester of the next year).

That would actually work fine for the backpacker who goes into the Brazilian jungle for a few months.

Any more serious responses to my question? heinzkat, you are so disappointing...lol.

Message:
I think the waiting period is the prevent people from abusing the system by repeated postponement in a lost position. Like, postponing for 14 days, making one move and then immediately postponing again for 14 days. The same reason as the option to cancel a postponement if the player is making moves in other games but trying to stall the lost game.

i.e. Q15 in the FAQ:

Q15: My opponent postponed a game, what can I do about it?

A: Generally, players can postpone their games for any reason (when they need more time to make the moves due to holidays, illness, work, etc.). However, if your opponent continues to make moves in any of his/her games, you will be able to cancel the postponement and restore the original time control for the game. The corresponding option will appear on the game page (above the chess board) that would allow you to cancel the postponement after your opponent makes at least 5 moves (in any of their games) during the postponement period. It is intended to prevent postponement abuse (e.g. stalling a hopelessly lost game, while continuing to play other games, etc. etc.). Please refer to the game postponement page for the complete rules.
