It really depends on the type of position. In a closed position, or in an endgame, more will be necessary. In a position that's open but not particularly sharp, it probably isn't necessary or even possible to see that far ahead, particularly when there are many alternatives, and general positional principles will have to prevail.

That isn't the answer you were looking for, though. OTB, I generally can see three or four moves in advance at most, and often I overlook things even then. I'm only rated about 1620 USCF, though.
