Subject: Using unrated games to instruct teammates?

Message:
Recently our team captain sent a message to all team members suggesting higher-rated team members challenge lower-rated team members to unrated games, with the intent being to instruct the lower-rated members in order to help improve their games. I sent 5 invitations to teammates asking them if they would like to participate in such instruction, 2 accepted. So I have been playing these two in unrated games in which I have regularly offered advice through comments. Then a vague memory about Gameknot's rules regarding offering advice to other members began to haunt me. Unable to remember the exact rules I decided to reread the info under the "Rules and Policies" link and found the following statement: "You may not consult with anyone nor ask for advice about any of your games in progress (nor provide such advice to other GameKnot players about their games in progress, whether solicited or not)." Although this statement does not explicitly address my situation, if taken as iron-clad, it appears to forbid the kind of instuction of teammates I am currently involved in. Although common sense suggests to me that there is nothing to be concerned about, since the instruction is beneficial and the games are unrated, I would like to know for certain what Gameknot's position on this issue is, as I do not want to break any of GK's rules.

Mentorship

Message:
Actually, GK used to promote (maybe still does) a mentorship program where higher ratings would play lower ratings and offer advice -- all within the context of unrated games. This seems to be the same sort of situation, so my guess is it's a great way to improve your game.

Does anyone know if the GK Mentorship program is still alive?

...

Message:
I'm not familiar with the mentorship program that bhidragon speaks of, but nevertheless I think you're in the clear when it comes to giving chess lessons. The soul of the consultation rule is to avoid having games where ten people are playing against one. That rule is the kind that is taken on a case-by-case basis, and the situation would have to be pretty severe for you to get in trouble for it.

Especially with an unrated game, I think you'll be plenty safe talking through a game with an opponent.

Don't reckon...

Message:
... GK would have any problem with the mentoring programme hypnogeist is running. That the games are unrated legitimates advice being given.

In any case, it seems likely that the anti-consultation rule is to obviate 3rd parties' interference or advice to one or other player. If the ban did have a broader application, maybe the consultation game ionadowman and premium_steve vs marinvukusic and tag1153 would also be non-legit. This appears on GK as an unrated game ionadowman vs marinvukusic. But discussions between the White players at any rate have been at times quite extensive. As far as we are concerned all four participants are prinicpals in the game.
Cheers,
Ion

Thanks to all for your comments - I no longer feel any concern about giving advice in unrated games.

Mentoring

Message:
The mentoring programme sounds a great idea, but I can’t find a reference to it anywhere on the site. Does it still exist?

Another factor to consider is that you're giving advise to your 'opponent' about how to beat YOU in an unrated game. You're not ganging up with an ally to beat another player.

That must be the group/program I was thinking about. Thanks. Which area of GK is that in?

It's in the "Club" section.
