Subject: Chess for Cash

Message:
Isn't it a good idea to make an extra feature that makes it possible to bet on your own games. Like, when you start a game you only want someone who dares to play for 5 euros ore dollars. Who wins will get the money automatically when he/she wins.

From Rules and Policies (bottom of every page):

"13. You may not bet, nor accept bets on any games or events on GameKnot."

Go to "ultimatecheckmate" instead, and prepare to go bankrupt!

Sounds like a hustle to me...

Message:
... I'm with GK's present rule in this issue. I quite fail to understand why anyone would want to bet on the game, unless it is to rip someone off. And I can imagine the kind of moral pressure that would be applied by hustlers to get weaker players to accept a bet and lose their money.

You know the kind of thing: start the game, 4 moves in say something like: "Care to make it a bit more interesting...?" You can imagine the kind of ELO rating manipulation that would go on, too. So, 4 moves in, the 1700-level player receives the "more interesting" message, sees the 1250-rating of his opponent, and smells a large and hairy rat - and stands to lose zillions of rating points or his shirt - or both. Nope: not a goer, for mine. But then, I don't gamble. Not for money, anyhow.

If you want to play for money, play Backgammon. The money is pretty much an integral part of the game, so is no doubt legit in online games.

Cheers,
Ion

ion makes a good point

Betting on games would create incentives for ratings manipulation.

temptation

I think this would create too much temptation for some people to use a computer for assistance.

I agree with cascadejames. People would be firing up Fritz faster than you can say "checkmate".

i like to gamble, i'll quite happily play poker for money, but chess is a different matter altogether. for a start, there is no luck in chess, he who is strongest will nearly always win. secondly, as has been covered, rating manipulation will go through the roof, so there is no way you can be sure you're playing an equal. and, as has also been mentioned, one could use a computer to defeat better players. and, i must confess, should i get to a six piece endgame, with £20 on the line, i would be very tempted to consult a tablebase. when we're talking about just rating points, i'd rather play to my own ability, so i know how good i really am. it's different when money is at stake.

i *might* be up for a little bet with a friend i trust, who is my chess equal, provided we are playing face to face. but online, it's a recipe for bankruptcy.
