Subject: Postponements

Message:
I have an opponent who just postponed all of his games for 5 days. Before he postponed his games, I had 10 hours left to make a move in one of my games against him. Well, now after he postponed his games for 5 days, I now have 9 hours left to make a move in that same game. I thought I should now have at least 5 days to make my next move in that game. Anyone have ideas on what just happened?

Thanks, Chris

Interesting...

Message:
perhaps postponements don't affect games with less than 24 hours to move for the opponent? I have never encountered such a thing...

Another thing I noticed. Usually when an opponent postpones games, isn't there a Gameknot message stating something like, 'Game Postponed'? I just made my move in the game, because I was now down 7 hours..

That message is only shown when there is more time on the clock than the normal time limit (i.e. 6d5h in a 5 day/move game).

postponements

Message:
I am currently playing in the 48th. Tournament and a player has postponed his move for 7 days ? How can this happen when there is a 2 day maximum time limit for each move ? It seems nuts to me . What about a year next time ?

If you need more time to make your next move, you can use that page to postpone your games.

Yes, ploy, that is the whole idea of postponements -- to give yourself more time than you otherwise would have had.

And there are limits as to how long you can postpone for at one time, so there's no need to get worried.
