Message: The reason why is because the contest isn't a competition to see who gets the most points each month. Instead, the competition is conducted like a lottery. Each time you solve a puzzle, you are essentially winning yourself a ticket under your name to be placed in a hat to be picked at random.
The idea is that the more puzzles you solve, you increase your chances of winning the prize. Practically speaking, though, in a pool of literally thousands of players, the difference between 28 solves and 31 solves becomes rather insignificant. So you can get all the puzzles correct, but you'll still have to rely on a fair bit of luck in order to win the prize.

Message: I think that is incorrect this sistem. My proposition is this:from the players who resolved the greatest number of problems you have to placerd them in a hat and then the winner is that REAL.The mode in which you have the selection doesn-t need this contest. You have on the main screen 2 problems daily!Think about this!Thank you!

11/01/2008 10:37:10 [ report abuse ] | Should have read "the rules"
Message: Official GameKnot chess puzzle contest rules:
1. Solve the current chess puzzle presented on this page for a chance to win a Garmin GPS Navigator with Maps of North America and Europe (the Grand Prize).
2. The goal of each puzzle is to checkmate your virtual opponent regardless of the moves they make (i.e. forced checkmate) within the given number of moves.
3. Each puzzle solution must be entered correctly and completely by making the moves on the chess board, which constitutes an entry for the contest. Up to 3 incorrect moves are allowed during the entering of the solution. Entering the 4th incorrect move makes the contestant ineligible for the contest that day.
4. A new chess puzzle will be made available each day at 00:01am PST.
5. Limit 1 entry per person per day. A valid account on GameKnot is required for entering the contest.
6. The contest ends on December 1, 2008.
7. The contest winner will be selected randomly from all eligible entries received before the end of the contest. GameKnot's decision is final and binding in all matters related to the contest. Odds of winning dependent upon the number of eligible entries.
8. The contest winner will be contacted by e-mail and private message on GameKnot within 3 days of the end of the contest. Please allow up to 3 weeks for the delivery of the Grand Prize.
9. If GameKnot is unable to deliver the Grand Prize to the winner due to circumstances outside of our control, the Grand Prize will be substituted with a 3-year Platinum premium membership subscription.
10. No purchase or payment necessary to enter or to win. For an alternative method of entering, mail a postcard with your user name to: GameKnot, P.O. Box 1527, Sausalito, CA, 94966-1527, USA. All federal, state and local laws and regulations apply. Void where prohibited.
11. GameKnot employees, agents, and their family members may not enter this contest.
12. GameKnot is not responsible for technical difficulties experienced in trying to participate in the contest, nor for any errors of any kind. GameKnot reserves the right to change or terminate the contest or the rules at any time.
13. Entry into the contest constitutes agreement that the contestant will abide by these rules.

Message: I think that trying to place only those with 100% accuracy would discourage participation. The objective of the contests are to attract more people to the site. New users would be much less likely to want to jump into the game if the rules required that they play every single day.
Also, it seems that lesser players would be at even more of a disadvantage, because the chances that they can solve every single puzzle is very slim.
No, I think the system they set up is actually pretty good. More talented chess players are rewarded by having better odds of winning, but everyone nevertheless still has a chance.

Message: Is there the possibility that a 2009 player lost to a 1454 player? It is nice that such a player solved that many puzzles.

Message: I agree with alice02. The contest is not intended to reward people who are really good at solving puzzle (please note that not only strong chessplayers are good at solving puzzles!) but, as remarked by chessnovice, to attract more people to the site.
I really think that this contest is a great idea, I never spent too much time on chess puzzles here, but since I learned about that, I started solving puzzles which are proposed daily (and it's a good exercise).
Finally, it's a matter of luck. If you are good enough to solve all the puzzles in a month you have more choice than the beginner who solves the easiest puzzle you can figure in your mind... but the luck has the last word. :)
