Subject: real time chess

Message:
I am sure that like me, many GK members have tried other online chess sites - out of curiosity if nothing else. What I would really like to know is, are there any other quality sites where it is possible to play real time games other than blitz. What I mean is, I would like to play OTB chess without having to leave the house !!

I have found a couple, but (not wanting to put any of them down, or show disrespect to any other players ) the standard is not that high, or it takes too long to climb through the rating system to ensure opponents of equal ability.

Thanks in anticipation,
Guy

There is chessanytime . com where i play blitz, but you can set various time controls of your choosing. A French site I believe (but in English), it is a really nice board + interface. The best I've seen really. And you can play there as a guest for free to see if you like it. Then I think it is still $7 a month which can be paid any month you want to play and the site still retains your Nik and Rating even if you skip months. The downside for you might be that they no longer have separate ratings for longer games vs blitz. It is all combined now. So you might not want to mix things. I think the rating system there is fairly accurate at first, as I run about 1900's to 2100 depending if using the Fun Nik (Scoti) or the Serious Nik. And you can get there fast since it uses a provisional basis at first. The trouble is, if you get thousands of games then the gain seems to slow down. Maybe you would not have so many tho, since you are not talking blitz.

I am using chesscube.com. Most people are there for Blitz or even faster play, but there are almost always a few players available for rapid-time or even longer time-limits.
