Subject: Q re "Join!" message
Message: I would like to know how to show the "Join!" option on the Available Games list instead of a specific rating, i.e. " less than" and "more than" options. Right now I don't see the way to do that, although I often see the "Join!" option on the list itself so I know it exists! A mystery ! Can anyone explain this? Thanks!

11/19/2008 18:27:51 [ report abuse ] | you are outside the rating range
Message: clshore,
If you don't see the "join" button it means that your rating is outside the range specified by the
person offering the game. So "join" is not an available option.

Message: Right now the list shows 3 games, in each the person proposing the game has specified -- less
than 1100. My rating is higher than 1100 so I can't join the game. The solution for you is to start
your own game, with the rating range you would prefer.

Message: I didn't realize the list was linked personally to my rating - is that the way it works?
If so, that's impressive!
Many thanks for explaining,
Best, :)

Message: you are trying to start a game and say that Anyone can join you regardless of rating you
would just need to leave the Minimum at "no limit" and put the Maximum at the highest it will
go to, which is probably about 400 Elo Rating Points above your own rating, or a bit more than
that.
From looking at my own Max being 2300 and my rating in the 1800's, appears it actually
rounds you UP to the next "even" 100 point level then adds 400 to get the Max for you. Being
1823, I expect yours would also be 2300. The reasoning is likely that Elo considers a 400 point
difference to be the level at which the lower rated players chance of Winning or even Drawing
should be virtually non-existent. I forget if they call it Zero percent or maybe 2 percent
chance. Which makes little difference in theory, tho in practice of course, anything can
happen!
***
If you are seeking games with players higher than 2300 you would need to ask them to start a
game with You. For which they may need to temporarily set their own perimeters low enough
to initiate, and accept your reply for, the game. Really this is helpful to them since I think
most Masters would rather be asked than receive unsolicited Challenges from players below
their threshold ...and even helpful for "us", as it makes us be courteous enough to Ask for a
game with them personally, recognizing they have little to gain from that pairing, unless they
enjoy teaching, perhaps trying out new ideas in an unrated game, or if you/we do spring a
really good or interesting TN on them. Also they only gain One Point for a Win but lose a Ton
(32 Points) or Elo for a Loss.
Whereas the lower rated may have much to gain potentially, in terms of knowledge &
technique. Certainly in rating. imo.
(Some players will disagree with me I'm sure. But before feeling Too frisky, should consider
that a 2300 player would have perhaps a couple losses and no more than a handful of draws
for every hundred games they play seriously vs Class players. A stat for which I Could name
names, not a guesstimate. Check it out. And even That is Better than Elo predicts for the
lower rated player results. Also They may have some very important Events ongoing. And
some Only take serious games, with rating peers. So I hope no one is too hard on them, nor
feels bad about it, should their game offer not be accepted. Its not personal... Tho those who
declare they "Never Resign" may find a bit more difficulty attaining such games I suspect :)

Message: IF I could summon up the courage, I'd imagine it would be quite an experience to play against a Master....doomed though I would be :-)))
I've adjusted my upper-limit rating level higher according to your information and am now "happy as a clam" with my "Join" feature. !!
Thanks for the great input!
Best,
