Subject: Today's puzzle

Message:
Am I missing something here? Why isn't today's puzzle accepting Qh4 as a valid opening move?

Whoops - looking at it again, I realise I'm an idiot. :-)

Today's puzzle...

Message:
Has an incomplete solution, as it misses a vital underpromotion by Black.

I recall there being a post about this puzzle a while back. There is a resolution for the vital underpromotion in this puzzle. But I don't think we ought to talk about it until the day ends...

The same with queen to g3.... this is not fair - I failed to solve it even though I can
solve the puzzle :\ I tried other moves that also led to a checkmate

Big spoilers here. There is no alternative to the solution as it is. But Black should make a different move to make White think some extra.

Since we already have people telling us incorrect moves, I will confirm that Qd4 is not mate in 4, it's mate in 5. It was the first move I tried, and I couldn't understand why it hadn't accepted it. I set up a new puzzle with an extra pawn in an irrelevant place so it would consider it a new puzzle, and proceeded to enter my solution. I was on a roll, it was all falling into place, but then...

1. Qd4 Rh1
2. Qxh1 a1=Q
3. Qh7 Qxa6

Ah, now it becomes clear. Black has gained himself an extra move.

Qg3 is also mate in 5 for the same reason, Black can promote on a1 with a move to spare.

I have two tries left, I will complete it!

For future reference, though, it is best that we wait until the next day before openly telling everyone which moves are not accepted. I might have had problems seeing why my first move was wrong, but I figured it was more likely I had overlooked something, than GK had posted an incomplete puzzle. I know it can happen, but I overlook things more often. Most of us do. So best thing to do is come here next day, and discuss the puzzle, and 9 times out of 10, someone will explain what you've overlooked.

Since I know there are people who have harped about people "secretly deleting" in the past, I try to make a habit of letting you know when I vote to delete posts.

I voted to delete this post because there are way too many spoilers. I tend to go after these puzzles first thing in the morning, and I was down to my last try on today's puzzle (it would have been my first missed puzzle since contests first began -- I expect there will be a low percentage for this puzzle). I would be really disappointed if all it'd take to get it right is to wait later in the day for people to give hints to what doesn't work.

I am interested in talking about this puzzle, but only after its day is up.

I made the same typo twice! I meant Qh4, as some may have realised, which had already been discussed as a wrong move. Qd4 isn't even legal!

1. Nb4 c2 2. Qc1! b1=B [sets up for stalemate]

3. Nd3! exd3 [forced] 4. Qh1#

Indeed a pity this "vital underpromotion" is not included in the solution for the problem.

Tries:
1. Qxc3? Rc1!
1. Qg3? Rg1!
1. Qh4? Rh1!

Composed by Ado Kraemer.

This thread [started on the day it was the front page daily puzzle] already covers most of it:

I remember the post. It's probably the only reason I got the puzzle right.

Hi heinzkat,
thanks for your last posting referring #283 nice solution with 3.Nd3 and explaining also why another knight's way Nd8-Ne6-Nc2 isn't solution. Now I'm enjoy more from this puzzle than with solving it!
