Subject: suggestion to mini tournament creators

Message:
Since I have been a member here I have tried every format of playing. I have found I enjoy the 5 player/ 3 days per move mini tournaments the best. However, I see many formed with 11 and 9 player requirements and long time frames. I am more attracted to the smaller player tournament as well as the shorter time for moves. In case there are others who feel the way I do I thought I would get the information out there that shorter is better.

For playing a generic mini, that may be true; but for a thematic mini, it is different.

In a thematic tournament, you want as many players as possible. You want as many possible variations played. Slow players can add a lot to such a tournament, so you don't want to exclude them. Any fast players playing will probably not mind as long as the tournament is filled up and they have something to learn from the experience. These tournaments can provide a template for Mastery of a particular opening without having to play all the games yourself.

I started a thematic mini for 11 players and had no problem getting people to join. It was an open tournament and was filled within about a week. The key is to not make the thematic variation too specific. It needs to be realistic and one that people are not likely to avoid when playing large numbers of games. If they cannot avoid it, then they will want to learn it. That gives many players a reason to join.

I have never had any trouble getting people to play in my point-seeker mini-tournaments.....most people love them because there is such a high level of competition since there is a goal in mind. They are 9+5<15 and 11 players. I like 11 players because more points are offered if you win and long times because people have lives outside of chess. These are my reasons. This is also an open invitation to play in my mini-tournaments--they are amazing and highly competitive. Top 3 players will be named on my profile for each tournament and every 10th tournament winner will be rewarded with a membership (I pay). Like I said, there is no other mini-tournament like mine...top of the line! (:
