Subject: Groups

The other day I worked out how the groups in a tournament are decided. Players are put in order by rating, the top played gets put in group 1, the second in group 2 and so on until 1/4 of the players have a group, then the best remaining player goes into group 1, the next in group 2 and so on. like this (Columns being groups, lower numbers being higher rated players)

16..17..18..19...20

The result of this system is that the higher you are within a quartile, the better your opponents are. This will lead to some groups being a lot harder to qualify from than others.
Does this not seem a little unfair?
Would some other system like this be fairer:

I think you are right indeed. if you count your four members all groups are equal to 42 and in the first system group 1= 34 vs group 4= 50. This is not the only inadequacy in the tournament play. you have 4 sections -1300, -1500 -1700 and expert, but the real experts are way above 2000, so if you have a rating of 1701, you are doomed to get lost in the first round. The difference between a player of 1299 and 1701 = 402 and the difference between a player of 1701 and 2301 is already 600. Ok there are al lot more players with lower ratings than with higher ratings, but still, the difference seems too big... It could be -1400, -1700, -2000 and expert, which is a more representative distinction I think, especially because 2000 has some magical extent (although it may not be so in reality)

Wuzzie's point is the reason I have quit playing in GK tournaments since hitting 1700+. The tiers are "granulated" in only one area of the ratings. But the difference in playing ability between a 1700 player and a 1900 player is much greater than that between a 1000 and a 1200 or between a 1300 and a 1500.

I definitely think one more upper rating tier would be warranted in the tournaments. I wrote to GK about this some time ago but did not get a response.

One more rating tier is needed for 1900 and under. I'm sure a 1950 player would fare much better against a 2100 player than 1750 player over a sizeable sample of games

All they need to do to confirm this is to check the results of game between players of these strengths and I'm sure it would be obvious. You can't make everyone happy, but this would satisfy a sizeable group of players.

Someone should message Mike. In fact more than one someone should do it.
