Subject: Move Time in Tournaments

Message:
Does anyone else think that two days are too short a time per move for the tournaments? I love to play the tournaments, but have to forgo most of them because they don't allow enough time between moves for people who spend a lot of weekends away, such as myself. I cannot see why the time limit on moves in tournaments cannot be changed from two days (48 hours) to three days (72 hours). By doing that many more people would be able to enjoy the tournaments and there would not be so many games lost or won because of timeouts.
Thanks for reading my comments. Nick

This has come up many times!!

Message:
A lot of people complain that the tournaments seem to go on forever and a lot of
people have complained that 2 days is too short for the tournaments.

Increasing the days to move for the tournaments would increase the time it takes
to finish a tournament.

I do not think that 2 days is too short to move in tournaments because
it does take too long to complete a tournament now.

Move Time in Tournaments

Message:
Hello Chuck,
Thank you for your response to my question. Yes, by changing the time limit for moves in the tournaments from two days to three would possibly lengthen some games. However, I do feel that it would also bring in a lot of new players who don't currently play the tournaments because of timing out on weekends.
I noted that you personally have a mininum of a five day limit on challenges so you too must like to have the extra time now and then to make a move without timing out. That is all I'm suggesting.
Nick

If you make your move on Friday afternoon,

Message:
in a two-days-per-move game, you have at least until Monday afternoon for your next move. (since on Saturday nights, 24 hours are added to the clock).

Time controls

Message:
Another interesting possibility can be apply the ICCF time rules in the Monthly tournaments; let's say, 10 moves in 20 days cumulative.
The weekend timeouts can easily be avoided, the time remaining is not reset to zero in each move, the opening can be played faster without loss of thinking time and many more advantages...
What can be worse on it?

Just another option to think or discuss about.

I like that idea. 10 moves in 20 days cumulative is likely to attract more players. Even I would seriously consider entering such a tournament!

I'm a fan of the way it is now...

Message:
No time trouble at all, instead of worrying you have to make three moves in one game in the next four days... moreover, with conditional moves available, you can put your opponent in even more relative time 'trouble'...

With tourneys going 6 or more rounds

Message:
The last thing needed is more time. Maybe one move a day and no free weekends to speed it up?

I learned to live with it

Message:
Currently, I mix up tournament and league games. League games are usually faster, and you could even select opponents by looking into their average time per move. Also when I need a quick fix, I could go online chess sites.

Some tournaments seem to last forever, especially in 8 player one, you need only one person who could delay the whole thing. However, over the years, I learned to accept it as it is.

When I look into my own habit, I tend to play to too fast, sometimes getting checkmated or hung Queen by not checking the very next move. To my opponents, playing with someone without deep thinking could also be as annoying as playing too slow. Luckily to me, not many people complain on hasty players.

My opinion is

Message:
that the best time control for GK tournaments would be 3+1 max 5, or 5+1 max 7 Fischer/incremental time

Message:
The problem with any time control like that will mean that players get a week to make some moves, I am in my 40's and I think I would die of old age before some of these tourneys would end. GK Tourneys need to be sped up, not slowed down.

Only incfremental time control that would work for GK tourneys would be 1+1 with a 2 day max.
