Subject: Maybe another format for the tournaments??
Message: This is just a thought and is based on the way the cup-competition works in soccer. I think it would avoid most problems of the current tournament including the slowness of a tournament round to finish and the fact that dividing players in rating groups can never be done perfectly.
Let's say we have 40 players competing. Sort them on their average rating of the last year and take the lowest rated 8 (20%) and put them into 2 round 1 pools.
When a round 1 pool is finished you take the winner(s) and make as much new round 2 pools as there are winners. You then take 3 players out of the lowest 8 rated players for every pool and round 2 can start.
The moment the other round 1 pool finishes you create the next round 2 pools ... let's say there's only one winner here.
You now have 3 round 2 pools going on with 5 (12,5%) people out of the competition, 12 (30%) people playing and 23 (57,5%) people waiting to be entered into a round.
You can continue the system until all players have entered a round but I would advise never to have 3 different rounds at once. So the start of round 3 has to wait until round 1 finishes. Let's try this out on the example:
Each round 2 produces 1 winner so we take 3 times 3 people from those 23 waiting ... every-time from the last 8 rated. We now have 14 people out, 12 people playing and 14 people waiting while round 3 is played.
Let's say that 2 pools have finished and produces 3 winners in total ... we start filling the pools. The moment you have less than 8 people left to be placed it's logical that you select out of the remaining players. In this case we need 9 people from the 12 left.
We now have 3 round 4 pools playing and 1 round 3 pool. What happens when there are 2 winners in the round 3 pool. We only have 3 players left to divide among 2 new round 4 pools. Well just make 1 pool of 5 players and your problem is solved.
Everyone is playing now while we are having 4 round 4 pools. From this moment the system can work just the same as the old one with a super final of at least 3 people (I liked the old rules more) in the end.
I admit that this system expects high rated players to wait a bit when the system is introduced but I'm sure they are still competing in other old tournament rounds so they will be busy, not?
For the rest every player, rated low or high competes in the same tournament and waiting times of players advancing to next rounds should be minimized.
This system more or less exist in soccer playing for the cup with the difference that you play on knockout instead in pools and the new round starts all at once ... because of the knockout. But the picking of players for the next round is more or less the same.
Well .... post your thoughts about it

Message: I am not against this (anything to speed up the tournaments), but the pairings for round 2, 3 etc won't be completely random, you will have the fastest guys playing each other. It's a minor issue probably.
But as you mentioned it, why not do a true knock-out tournament? In real life people won't travel to tournaments when they may end up playing just one game, but on-line it is possible.
