Subject: Is it right?

Message:
In this moment I'm playing in 49th GK tournament and watching the Intermediate section's progress (my section), I saw 1550-1600 players......What? is the maximum 1500??? OK, it can happen to exceed 1500 and go to 1510-20 or even 1540, but, for me it's not a right thing to keep in Intermediate section 1550-1600 players, cause they dominate their round, of course. What do you think?
Thanks for reading.

the 49th is still in the first round, right? Players exceeding the rating limit get moved up at the end of the first round for the reason you stated

disagree

Message:
I think the players should not be moved. The tournament takes quite some time to end and people progress. So the best players of those who started survive and it is normal that their rating rises. If they are moved, they are 'punished' for their good results, knowing for sure they will not survive next round of a higher tournament. Sometimes a rating can fluctuate quite quickly, in both directions. At the start of the tournament, their rating was low enough to enter the tournament, so everybody started at equal terms. Since GK looks at the last 90 days of the rating, it is a fair system, keeping out some people who time out deliberatly to get their rating low enough. Also, if you get to the third round and your rating is to high and you are put in a higher division, your not only punished, but also rewarded, cause you are suddenly in the third round of advanced, where normally you would have lost in first or second round. So also there you are not in the right place!

Wuzzie, you're right. Those players are punished for their good results. But I think it's not right they dominate their sections, too. So I think best is moved them or create more sections: 1200-1300; 1300-1400; 1400-1500; and so on...In this way the problem is the same but to move a player in a section in which there are 200 or more points ahead is not good.

Creating sections that are only 100 points wide is a terrible idea (IMO). Firstly, the tournaments would all shrink in size massively.

I also don't think you're really punished for improving. if anything, it's a reward. I know if I suddenly jumped up by 200-300 rating points, I wouldn't want to be stuck playing guys 600 points below me. Also, the idea is that if your rating increases, it's because you're improving. So these players that get moved are now playing where they should be and get to keep improving - you can't improve if you only play people who are worse than you.

later rounds

Message:
I reread the tournament rules. It is only after first round you can get promoted to a higher division, not in the later rounds, so that makes the problem less problematic :) I think the division is good as it is now, having 5 tournament levels. Ratings fluctuate too much to have divisions each 100p.

Is GK not looking at Avarage rating instead of current rating

What doesn't seem right when a player is moved out of tournament because of rating changes their prior results stand. I just noticed, I am now in first place in a tournament, and haven't finished any games yet. The reason is, I received two wins against a player that was moved; but the loses other players received still stand.
