 Subject: Team Rivalry Tournament
Message:
Each of the five rival teams will pick a single member to represent them for each rating pool.
Each rating pool will be a separate mini-tournament run on GK, consisting of a rating limit
range of 100 pts. Each pool, or division, will have only one player from each team, all
struggling to win their rating's division.
For example, the rating pool of 1451 - 1550, might consist of the following players:
PAWN STAR - carol45
NY LOVER - tetis
FLYING ZEBRA - emptyhead
NAVY LOSERS - jeffreydot
VB-FOUREX - bravesparrow
Each division will be run as a 5 player invitational mini-tournament on GK. The tournament
points scored by an individual will be added to his/her team's total. To make things absolutely
fair, to account for teams that cannot fill all of the pools, the final score will be averaged by
the number of pools participated in by a team.
Divisions with less than five players will have dummy players added that will timeout in all
matches (this will not affect player ratings - matches will be less than 3 moves).
Players can represent their team in more than one division. Playing in divisions above ones
rating is permissible. In instances where ratings are borderline, with discussion, they may be
allowed to play down one division as well. The rating pools at present are:

1051 - 1150
1151 - 1250
1251 - 1350
1351 - 1450
1451 - 1550
1551 - 1650
1651 - 1750
1751 - 1850
1851 - 1950
1951 - 2050
2051 - 2150
Team Captains will have final say on all divisional representatives for their team.

to all concerned for considering us a an interim rival, and I hope we can add to the excitement of the event.
This is the best thing to happen in team chess on GK since I've been playing here, so let's make it a great success and maybe start a trebd for such events.
Once again, my thanks to all concerned, especially Xena and Abegtrup.
I'll have a list of players available soon - the team seem to be very interested in taking part, so hopefully can fill in the gaps you currently have in some sections.

We're still doing mini-tournaments with 5 players.
The only problem is some of the teams are either top or bottom heavy, leaving 5 or 6 straight
divisions unmanned. We have invited the Blue Moon Rising (BMR) team to help fill some of
those gaps, so we don't have to fuss with dummy players.
They should be able to present up to eight players, which is actually more than some of the
original teams.
As it is, bringing in yet a 7th team, is still a strong possibility. I was going to wait until after
we had the BMR roster, so I would know what we could offer. If anyone has suggestions, I
know we will still have room available in the divisions 1550 and up, even with the BMR help.
That would allow a team to enter with at least six players...

Could any one of the teams involved enter more than one player in a division to fill it out? Can the math be done? That way we could keep it to the true rivalry theme. Not that I mind Blue Moon's entering the chorus.
Are the Pawn Stars the only team with rivals cause we are such a lovable bunch?

Message:
Mike, GK's admin, has written to me to say he will take care of any empty slots. He's going to
set the mini-tournaments to display winners, even without a full roster, and afterwards, he'll
delete the tournaments, so they won't take up players slots.
For future tournaments, this will make things much easier.
Simply invite as many teams as desired; pick a suitably
large (or larger) mini-tournament size, and just do not worry
about trying to fill up all the empty slots.

Of your twelve (12) players/divisions,
Seven (7) have already been successfully invited;
Three (3) of the divisions have not yet be started;
And at least one (1+) still has to finish up games to become eligible;
odonata's team isn't represented in your one (1) division, because the player wasn't eligble at
the time it was started, and a Blue Moon Rising player was accidently placed in the
tournament instead. It only happened in the one division - it was an innocent mistake.
Remember, this is the first time this has been tried. It's a work in progress...

That same individual who was accidently bumped from his division was placed in the next
higher division, in which his rating was more appropriate anyway, and is very happy. Your
division, manhattan, still has five rival teams in it to compete against each other. So, no harm
done.

[ report this post ] | Notes for future TEAM RIVAL TOURNAMENTS
Message:
For those interested in starting future team tournaments:
1) Only premium members can start a mini-tournament (division), so make sure there is at
least one per division of play.
1a) When having players start divisonal pools, send an exhaustive instructional message,
explaining every detail of the mini-tournament setup, i.e. time constraints, rating limits, title,
description, etc. The more they can cut and paste, the less they can accidently mess up.
2) Do not worry about picking too large a mini-tourney size. Mike, (GK admin) will take care
of extra space, when brought to his attention (gameknot.com/contact.pl).
3) Set mini-tournament rating ranges at least 50 points higher and lower than divison range.
This will allow for fluctuations in participants ratings as the pools are started up (which takes
longer than you think). It also allows for players to play up (or down) to fill a space for their
team in the tourney.
4) Try to pick teams that can fill at least 6 or 7 divisions. Players can become unexpectably
uneligilbe, and you want to have at least five divisions represented by a team to make for a
good showing and fair judging, since team scores are averaged by number of divisions played
in.
5) Look for teams that might help complement each other; ex. if you have a team very heavy
in low ratings only, find another team heavy in high ratings. Two teams help fill out one
potential slot in all the divisions. (It's no fun to be the winner of the 1000- or 2000+ divisions
if there isn't anyone in your division with you!)
6) Enlist help of captains to coordinate rosters with eligble players. Eligibility means they have
game availability, are not in too many mini-tournaments, are not currently on vacation, and fit
the divisional rating range (some players' ratings may not be accurate at time of start, and
most captains know their players very well). Also, let the captains make the hard decisions as
to who gets to play and who doesn't from their team! ;)
7) Start a forum page that explains how the tournament is going to work. This is for team
captains to be able to refer to, as well as refer their team players to.
8) Learn to use Excel and build a quick spreadsheet. Keep track of all the potential divisional
participants and their current status, (that includes team alternates for a division - very
important to have.) Everyone's going to be asking you all the questions, and it makes it a
whole heck of a lot easier when you got them written down.
