I try to think the best of people, and not look for deception or dishonesty. Perhaps that is a good definition of foolishness. I'm not too upset though. We have suffered a few setbacks, but I hope we don't allow ourselves to be consumed by this identity crisis nonsense. This team is packed with honest players just trying to do their best and get fair wins. As long as they don't mind being led by a clown then I'll be happy to keep plugging away. The show must go on! I am only sorry that we had a "viper" in our midst and he not only sabotaged your English Defence but also the Olympic aspirations of the England team. Words fail me as to why a seemingly intelligent person should want to hurt all his friends. Even now that he is "being honest" about the situation he is still lying through his teeth as, despite everything he says, he has just formed a new identity with which he will no doubt try to sabotage things again. The new identity is stingz. Please, skipper, don't let stingz infiltrate his way back into our team...... I wish you better fortune in the future Kind regards, Cal PS Skipper. However I can't see how anyone could have known or doen anyhting to prevent it. I wouldn't worry about being deceived skipper-it seems everyone was. I must apologise for my recent appalling form. I seem to have lost 7 team games in a row. I thought I should apologise and make it clear it is just terrible play and not anything suspicious or devious. I take full responsibility. I am hopeful in one or two to come.

I haven't much very positive to add to parrvert's new tournament proposal aside from thinking it's a great idea, I would like (if possible) to see it organised on a flexible basis, to allow for the possibility of new players entering (or perhaps dropping out) mid-way through...Is this possible with any currently recognised format? (I will send a challenge to bigphil straight away!) Two new outgoing challenges added today; 1) A 5 player challenge to Kumpan's Chessworld of Peace, involving the following players; grobler biggie leedavis stanc malkavian 2) A 6 player challenge sent to the Jedi team, consisting of the following chaps; stellaknight cooter lesvillain malkavian fatrat icantwrite I also accepted a 2 player challenge from the Chessworld of Peace, involving archbold64 and tonyh. Sorry about the lack of immediate new games, I had to withdraw two challenges. I wish it was not the case but pressure of work is intruding on my time more than somewhat. I have just had to work 34 hours straight (7am Thursday to 5 pm Friday) and I am consequently shattered. I will need some sleep and a little time to recover. Please don't lose faith in me everyone, I know this situation has affected my chess (-12 and sinking) but I don't want anyone to think I'm losing interest in the team. In a couple of days I will post a set of new challenges to include all available players, and accept any incoming challenges if I can. You are all doing the best you can and pushing our score higher than it's ever been. Have a good weekend, I'll have a restful one if I can then return with renewed energy... Regards, mercury_whyte

Somewhat rested from my weekend off and very proud of the team, we've pushed our score further than ever - and considering the opponents your captain throws you all in against that is a great achievement. WELL DONE everyone. Welcoming to the team our 33rd and newest recruit owenelbuho I hope to include him in a couple of games as soon as he is available! I have had a look round the team just to make sure everyone is present and correct and I am pleased to report that as far as I know we're all still here! Below are three lists of the current status of English Defence players (to the best of my knowledge). If any of the following information is not correct the please let me know and I'll make due note. 1) List of available players (in rating order, just for my reference) tkdman (welcome back!) grobler biggie bigphil tonyh stellaknight sacrifice sb123456789 cooter mercury_whyte 1830 malkavian banglaman mkkid fatrat izs26 icantwrite knighthawk 2) List of players currently unavailable by request (or status unknown therefore reserved from challenges until I have information) archbold64 calmrolfe parrvert leedavis stanc vexxed markas chesschollar 3) Players unavailable for challenges according to GK computer (only accurate at exactly the time I checked; 18.30 Monday 8th September) cavturbo dazz lesvillain anathema darrenmcniff owenelbuho birknhead As I said, if any of the above lists are not correct give me a shout and I'll amend my records! I have sent out three challenges involving almost everyone on the first list at least once. They are as follows; A) A 7 player challenge to the Dutchables team, involving the following players; tkdman grobler biggie bigphil tonyh sacrifice 1830 B) A 5 player challenge to the Knights of the 65th Square team, involving the following players; grobler biggie stellaknight sb123456789 cooter C) A 7 player challenge to Team Canada, involving the following players; 1830 malkavian mkkid fatrat izs26 icantwrite knighthawk Here's hoping some of these are accepted soon! If they are I am negotiating a challenge to the Wild attackers team for the near future... Finally in answer to a question from malkavian; how do I select teams to challenge? Firstly I look through the teams table for opposing teams of a good size. Since we are only allowed 3 simultaneous challenges (incoming or outgoing) at any one time, I usually like to send a good sized challenge (from 5 to 8 players). It's difficult to keep the whole team busy with challenges smaller than this. Sending an 8 player challenge to a team with only 10 players in it (for example) will almost always lead to a declined challenge, as the opposing captain usually has some players unavailable. As the challenging captain I have no way of knowing this without asking him with a message then waiting for the reply... So for this reason I tend to select teams of 15 or more players. These teams also need to meet other criteria; i) The ratings within the team need to more or less match those of the players I wish to send in the challenge ii) The team must be an 'active' one - there are quite a few teams out there where the captain has gone missing, leaving the team dead in the water iii) The team has to be 'trusted' ie; not a team which has answered a previous challenge with unfairly rated opponents. The better a team conforms with these three parameters, the more likely it is that a sent challenge will be accepted. I try to get as many challenges accepted as possible to avoid wasting everyone's time. Therefore 'vetting' possible teams to challenge can sometimes be time-consuming in itself. Over time we do build up relationships with some teams (Russian Time, Avalanche, Kumpan's to name but a few) and this makes life a little easier, but it can still take a fair bit of work to put a programme of challenges together... This is not correct I am informed, the position is actually this; A team can only have 3 Outgoing challenges at any one time, but can receive an unlimited number of Incoming challenges at any time. I mention this because we have just received a negotiated challenge from the Lords of the Teams, which I have accepted involving the following players; tkdman grobler biggie sb123456789 malkavian These players have fairly well matched opponents, so best of luck to them! The Dutchables have also accepted my earlier challenge... By the way tonyh, I have contacted kumpan to discuss the matter concerning your games against aboutayil, I'll wait to see what he says. It is very well organised, I get weekly supplements from Conrad Goodman and can also view the interactive site IECC-Gameknot and follow the progress of all my team mates games. Did you take over from Mimi (schachfruend) ? she had not made many moves last time I looked. It is not easy inheriting someone else's chess position but I am sure that if anyone can turn it round, then you can. I hope however that there are some others who can help, good luck to icantwrite and tkdman if they do get involved... I received a message from chesscolar telling me of a promotion at work which involves moving out of the UK, so chesscholar is leaving GK. (Current games have been resigned leaving us with a -4 score for this player but I had a look at the games and none of them were going too well anyway...) Best of luck for the future anyway chesscholar, I hope the promotion works out...it was a short association, but that's life I suppose. A little news concerning challenges. Well although I'm still in Oz/NZ 'til Feb '04, I've decided to pursue a 10th GK tournament, so you may notice an asterisk next to my name occasionally. This is for two reasons: a) To reduce the total number of games that will be played thus speeding up the tournament, b) So the different preferences of time control can be catered for. Most likely one group would be 3 days/move and one would be 5 days/move. Perhaps at the end the top players from each group could play each other to decide an overall winner. OK then banglaman, malkavian, cavturbo and indeed markas (who got in touch with me the other day) I will try to get you chaps into as many challenges as I can in the next 24 hours!! I am OK with the idea of splitting the team tournament into two groups, I don't mind which one I end up in, 3 days or 5 days will be fine with me... Incoming challenges are still few and far between, but all 3 of my sent challenges were accepted this weekend, which isn't bad. cavturbo I am a bit sorry you were selected to play curator, I did send a message with that challenge asking if you could be drawn against another player as tkdman is indeed already playing him. My request seems to have been overlooked... I wouldn't have minded if the challenge had been declined, but you are rather stuck with those games now. All I can do is wish you the best of fortunes and promise to be rather more cautious when arranging games with that team in future. New challenges will follow very soon, and look out for Page 12! Message: malkavian, the problem with splitting the groups by rating is that it still leaves players in the same group who want different time controls. Also most of the players are 1200-1600 with only a few higher rated, making it difficult to split evenly and fairly. tkdman, dutchgrasseii left on good terms and was happy to continue in the tournament where the time control was better for him, I saw no reason to expel him from the tournament. I think it is better to try and keep the same players in the tourny from start to finish, although circumstances have meant that some changes had to be made. Hope this is OK.
