| mercury_whyte 9/17/2003 02:23:26 [ report this post ] | More challenges...Message: I have had a couple of messages from other captains wishing to negotiate challenges, so I will pursue those... Sorry I've not been around much, pressure of work again I am afraid, but I will organise three more challenges this evening. Only 1 out of 3 accepted last time but these things happen, maybe I'll have better fortunes tonight. I will update the address of our forum page on the team homepage too. Will post again this evening with some challenge news! Regards for now... mercury_whyte |

Well done everyone, our score is stretching into the high sixties...I won't be putting myself forward for any more team games for a while, as my form is truly atrocious. I'll carry on administating as best I can and rely on you chaps to carry me onward to glory! My challenge to the Global Bounty Hunters is still outstanding, perhaps it will be accepted this weekend. I have sent out a couple more small challenges to supplement it in the meantime... 1) A 4 player challenge to the Chess Addicts team; anathema markas icantwrite banglaman 2) A 3 player challenge to the Queen Swap team; malkavian fatrat sableus (first games!) I hope these will happen in due course. Anyone playing too many/too few games right now please post or send me a message and I'll make due note! Best of luck and have a good weekend chaps... | parrvert 9/20/2003 05:28:04 [ report this post ] | malkavianMessage: I know it's tough to play against higher rated players but only one or two of your opponents would be over 2000, most would be between 1200 and 1600. I will look at finalising the tournament details tonight or tomorrow. I see the team score is +70, keep up the good work! |
| malkavian 9/20/2003 06:42:41 [ report this post ] | thanks parrvertMessage: it's tough to organize a tournament with so many different ratings but u've done a good job, I trust this will be done the best way for all =) Keep the good work, +70, the higher ever isnt it? still not enough ;) Malk |
| parrvert 9/20/2003 12:47:43 [ report this post ] | Team Tournament 2 Message: The second English Defence Team Tournament will start soon. To keep the total number of games at a manageable number and to cater for the different preferences of time control the tournament has been split into two groups: GROUP A Time Control: 3 days/move Archbold64 Parrvert Tonyh Stanc Anathema Malkavian Icantwrite Fatrat Mkkid Banglaman GROUP B Time Control: 5 days/move Tkdman Cavturbo Biggie Sb123456789 Sacrifice Cooter Lesvillain Mercury_whyte Markas Izs26 The groups were decided by the preferences you expressed to me regarding time control, the players who gave no preference were put into the groups by their ratings. Players will play every other player in their group twice, once as white, once as black. All notices of when games should start (games to be played here on gameknot) will be posted in the team forum. Good luck! Chris |
| mercury_whyte 9/23/2003 02:16:42 [ report this post ] | Very proud of the team...Message: Well done everyone, the team has performed brilliantly over the last few days! I should mention some players by name and I will later, but for now congratulations on a fantastic effort... The new tournament is looking very interesting parrvert, I'm looking forward to it, very well done! A whole new set of challenges will be sent this evening, hopefully new games will begin soon for everyone who wants them. Regards for now, will post again soon... mercury_whyte |
| banglaman 9/23/2003 03:20:22 [ report this post ] | Well done team !Message: I too would like to congratulate team mates. My own performance has slipped recently, fortunately the team has performed fantastically , and this has inspired me to do better, and be more focused in my games. Special Mention to Malkavian who seems to have stormed to second place from no-where well done team mate. Keep up thr good work lads. Also thanks Parvert for your work on the forthcoming tournament, I am very much looking forward to it, even though looking at the group it looks like I'm going to take a hiding. Best regards to all, and good luck with your games Banglaman |
| mercury_whyte 9/23/2003 10:42:08 [ report this post ] | 23rd September UpdateMessage: Greetings everyone, I have sent out three new challenges for those in need of games... 1) A 4 player challenge to the Knights of the 65th Square team, involving the following quartet; tonyh 1830 markas banglaman 2) A 7 player challenge to the Silman Team, involving the following heptet (?) cavturbo grobler sb123456789 stellaknight cooter malkavian mkkid 3) A 9 player challenge to Yeshua's Servants team, involving the following septet (??) tonyh sb123456789 markas icantwrite sableus fatrat izs26 darrenmcniff owenelbuho (A brief note on this one; I have said to the captain of the opposing team we will accept a rating variation upto +/-200 if the challenge as a whole is well balanced. This makes it easier for him to select opponents, but some players may end up with tough games...I know everyone will do their best!) Finally a little yearning that struck me as I was penning this...Wouldn't it be nice if you could change the colour of the 'Black' pieces on any given board so they appeared red, like the chess pieces in Alice through the Looking Glass... It would just make an interesting visual diversion I think. Best regards to all, keep on winning chaps!! mercury_whyte |
| parrvert 9/23/2003 11:20:18 [ report this post ] | TournamentMessage: Just to explain how the tournament will work: The games will not all start at once, I will post here when games should start, I will aim to avoid giving players too many games at once. One player will have to send a challenge to the other to get the game started. I will put results and standings up on this website: www.geocities.com/englishdefence When a page is set up for the new tournament (hopefully this weekend) the tournament can begin. |
| icantwrite 9/23/2003 17:45:52 [ report this post ] | Well done and i'm sorry...Message: I just want to apologise for letting the side down. | mercury_whyte 9/24/2003 09:30:45 [ report this post ] | More challenges...Message: Well done parrvert, clearly a lot of work has gone into this new tournament on your part and it's looking very interesting... Don't lose heart icantwrite, sometimes you get drawn against pretty tough opponents, as we all do playing for this team. In the past month I think we have had about 3 incoming challenges (where I get to select the rating variations) and I must have sent out 30 or 40 challenges, placing us at the mercy of other captains. Most do their best to reply with balanced opposition but inevitably some are tougher than others. I know that several of you are involved in a challenge I sent to the Silman team, and you are drawn against players rated 200-300 above you. These will be difficult games but they are a chance to learn a little perhaps, even if our team score suffers a bit in the short term. I know you'll all give each game your best efforts. All three of the challenges I sent out last night have been accepted, and at the request of various players I have whipped up a few more. I was waiting for you to get in touch biggie, now I know you're hungry for more games I will include you in the next few challenges... 1) A 3 player challenge to the Knights of the Coffee Table team, involving these three characters; malkavian markas banglaman 2) Another 3 player one, this time to the Slo Dogs team, involving these players; malkavian fatrat banglaman 3) A 4 player challenge to the Older Generation team, involving the following chaps; biggie malkavian markas banglaman I hope new games flow soon from these challenges! I'm still suffering with this damned cold, had a miserable day at work today, but I've managed to rustle up a few more challenges; 1) An already accepted challenge to the Knights of the 65th Square team, involving the following players; vexxed (welcome back!) malkavian knighthawk 2) A renegotiated challenge to the chess addicts team (I had to withdraw the first one) involving the following; tonyh icantwrite izs26 3) A 5 player challenge to the ---For USSR--- team in response to a message, involving these players; sb123456789 id=vexxed markas sableus izs26 4) A 3 player challenge to the Rollin' Stoned team, involving the following players; malkavian banglaman owenelbuho That should keep a few people busy - assuming these are accepted of course. | mercury_whyte 10/03/2003 05:17:08 [ report this post ] | Concerning the team score...Message: You'll have to accept my apologies 1830 (and anyone else involved) if some of our opposing captains have selected tough opponents for you to play. I know you'll give each game your best shot and I'm not expecting miracles. Without checking out the games I won't comment on the relative fairness of these newly accepted challenges, but I must now raise a question on the subject of fairness. Recently our team score has increased at a growing pace, moving us closer to the top of the table. At first glance this is a cause for celebration and pride in our achievement, but I am sorry to say I believe everything is not quite as it seems. Over the last few weeks malkavian, one of our most enthusiastic and fast-playing team members, has been on an unbroken winning streak which has helped to carry our team towards +100 points and has carred him to the top of our internal players list. I could not help noticing after a while that, although he was winning a large number of games for the team, malkavian's personal rating was not going up very much. Out of curiosity I visited his profile page and looked at the completed games list. I found that, at regular intervals, malkavian had been losing games against players with ratings of around 800, more than 400 points below his own rating. These games were always resigned after three moves, and on the four games that I examined the moves made were Pawn H3, H4, H5 then resignation. The effect of these resigned games is to take malkavian's rating down by 16 points per game. The only reason I can think of to do this is to distort the personal rating to an arteficially low level compared to the player's true ability. Until yesterday I was unaware that this was happening. I have been including malkavian in challenges to other teams in good faith, requesting that opposing captains match ratings as closely as possible (in his case, mid to upper 1300's). I now believe malkavian's true ability would warrant a GameKnot rating between 1600 and 1700. I do not know what malkavian's motivation is for this action. It may be a genuine desire to help the team succeed. It is even possible that there is a good explaination for these resigned games which I have overlooked. The consequence however is that many of our recent challenges to other teams have been less than completely honest, and some of our points have been earned in a less than fair and transparent way. I have contacted malkavian privately on this matter but we seem to have had trouble getting personal messages through. I have received two other messages on this subject (one from another member of this team, another from the captain of an opposing team) and I cannot allow such practices to distort the honesty of our relations with other teams. Even if the intent was not to 'cheat', that has effectively been the result. I will take no other action until next week as I must go now and I will not be online again until Monday Morning. All I will add is that I place the highest importance on this team being one which values fairness and open honesty above everything else. What other teams may or may not do is not important to me. If we end up with tough games and lose more than we win then so be it. I feel more strongly than anything that a win gained by unfair tactics is not worth having. Comments are obviously appreciated, but please everyone I ask that you show restraint and respect for each other's opinions on this matter. This is an emotive issue but I don't want to start a slanging match or split the team over it. I will read what you have posted next week and decide what to do next. Above all, please respect malkavian's right to reply on this matter. Respectfully and with regrets, mercury_whyte |
| calmrolfe 10/03/2003 06:17:49 [ report this post ] | CuriousMessage: malkavian appears to have a most unfortunate record when playing 700-800 GK rated players, losing all of them without putting up a fight. This does very effectively dampen down his personal rating. Perhaps, in the name of fairness, our captain should compensate to the other extreme, and rate malkavian higher than he should be, ie 1800 GK and match him with other players of this standard. In this way we can perhaps, over a period of time, rectify any unfair advantage which we may have unwittingly obtained. Phew !! Who'd be a team captain huh !! ? Kind regards to all Cal |
| 1830 10/03/2003 10:08:59 [ report this post ] | MalkavianMessage: I for one believe that Malkavian should be given the right to a fair hearing all be it between himself and the captain or in this forum. If there is a question of honesty to be raised then I think it is what we do now to repair the damage caused in respect to team relation's. I think that this is a decision for the captain alone ohhh the heavy burden of captaincy. Please everybody hold fire before making any rash comments. |
| icantwrite 10/03/2003 11:16:00 [ report this post ] | Fair hearing.Message: I also think that malk should be given a fair hearing whether one on one with the captain or within this forum.
