team update .....

Message:
Hello team

Let’s start by telling that I like it when people use this forum to tell someting about the teamthings. This really makes it a team.

I just declined a teammatch from team Jogho. I could accept but that would not be fair. One of there players had to play one of us with a ratingdiffrence over 200 points. I like to keep things fair. I wrote the teamcaptain a message with all our available players and asked him to challenge us again.

Here are some results so far:

CC ..vs.. The motley fools __ 2 : 2 __ 8 games to go
CC ..vs.. Mental Patience __ 2 : 0 __ 2 games to go
CC ..vs.. Chess Addicts __ 0 : 0 __ 6 games to go
CC ..vs.. Scandinavian Team __ 0 : 0 __ 10 games to go
CC ..vs.. Buenos Aires Team __ 1 : 0 __ 3 games to go
CC ..vs.. Belgian Lions __ 0 : 0 __ 8 games to go

I also made a new teamtable. In this table a small change, I placed the ratings behind the name and the number of games etc behind that.

strauss32………………….. 1000 | stop | 0 | stop
anchorman2020 ……….. 994 | 2 | 2 | 0

I also wrote a message to strauss32 asking him how he is doing (not only as a message here at GK but also to his normal mail.) I hope we hear something from him very soon.

I’m still looking for some matches for the top 5 available players, I hope the others will soon have the remaining two possible games.

Enjoy chess!

Message:
bigmick lost all his teamgames due to a timeout. He had his reason, he had a death in the family. I guess he forgot to postpone. I wrote him a personal message to give him my personal condolances.

I will not give him any more games until he tells me to.

In the mean time two new members applied to join our team error and kinghenry apllied. I will write them a personal message first but I guess it's no problem to accept them as new members.

Perhaps you all can write a personal message to bigmick, he can use some support now I guess.

new teammember, I've also a big problem

Message:
A new teammember joined our team, his name is kinghenry. I hope he is willing to tell something about himself in this thread. I will give him a maximum of 2 games due to the low number of played games. I studied these games and in my opinion he is a very strong player, we can use him.

A problem is the other player, error. He gives his age as 5 but the additional info is not written by a 5 year old (will it be understand by a 5 year old?). I have my doubts about him. I asked him to tell me everything about himself so – as a team – we can decide if he is allowed a teammember of the CC. If a lot of you have the same problem with error it would be a big error (practical joke) to make him a teammember. I would like your advise in this matter please.

Some results came in, some about the matches we keep track of:

CC ..vs.. The motley fools __ 2 : 2 __ 8 games to go
CC ..vs.. Mental Patience __ 2 : 0 __ 2 games to go
CC ..vs.. Chess Addicts __ 0 : 0 __ 6 games to go

kinghenry intro

Message:
Hello team…just a short introduction in case anybody is interested. I read demuziekdoos team thread a while back, and I thought this would be a nice team to join. Looks like he’s really trying hard to improve the team.

There’s plenty of room to go higher without all the egos that go with it on other teams. I’m a casual over the board USCF player who was a little over 2100 a long time ago, but nowhere near that since. Seems like a common enough story from what I’ve read. I can still play an interesting game now and then, and I hope I can help the team.

There seem to be lots of different personalities here at GK, and I admire the voices of reason when they speak out. They make this site interesting. Chess players I admire….Petrosian for his refusal to lose, Botvinnik for his determination to win, Reti and the young Kasparov for their pursuit of change in a world of stagnant chess. And now Akobian for combining honor, sportsmanship, and fighting spirit in his quest for the GM title and beyond. I live in Southern Calif, and I look forward to getting to know some of you and maybe going over a game or two. Kinghenry refers to a chessmaster I studied, and my local club director. Both are kings in my eyes.

Message:
i noticed he was 5 on his/her profile. Many people put daft things on their profiles.

I checked some of his/her comments in the forums and they seemed o.k.

my advice is to ask him/her to put their correct details on the profile before he/she is allowed to join.

I would also like the chance to 'black ball' any prospective new team member. i.e. you announce x wants to join and if one team member says NO then he/she should not be allowed. We have all played the odd person who we would not like joining our team.

Looking to get better

Message:
Does anyone have any good ideas on chess books to study or an idea on how to study chess. I'm an average player with at times of being better than average player. Playing here has helped my game but I lose a lot of games I shouldn't. I lose my focus and make a bad move. The last two loses I was up in the game and should have won but made a bad move and lose both games (non team games). What I'm trying to say is how can I become a better then average player?

Introducing myself

Message:
Hello all, I think I will follow kinghenry's example and give you all a brief introduction to myself. First of all thanks to demuziekdoos for allowing me to be a part of this team, you all seem like a great bunch of chessplayers! I'm really enjoying my time here at gameknot and try to put the most effort I can into all my games.

Thanks to demuziekdoos for my billing as a 'very strong player', but I don't quite believe thats right myself, I just try my best! I've always got time for a game of Alekhine's defence which is my favourite line to play. Chess players I admire are Spassky, Karpov, and many of the English Grandmasters, including the late Tony Miles. I hail from the beautiful country of New Zealand. I look forward to getting to know more of you here at gameknot.

Hi everyone & reply to cm3

Message:
Hi everyone,

What a great active team we have! Many thanks to demuziekdos for being a great captain and keeping the ball rolling. Apologies to everyone that I timed out on in the minitournament - I went away for the weekend and neglected to postpone.

Captain Demuz: I would like to change my maximum from "a lot" to "10." I'm not sure I'm allowed more than that anyhow.

CM3: You asked how to improve. It sounds like your problem is not waiting to check your moves thoroughly. What works for me:

(1) NEVER play when you're in a hurry (e.g. your wife is calling you for dinner or you're late for a meeting). The games will always be there - postpone if you need to.

(2) Select a move, then go to analyze to check out the consequences.

(3) Look at every single opponents piece and what it can do before finalizing your move.

(4) avoid common pin or discovered attack situations like leaving your Q on the same file as opponents R.

(5) always try to improve the activity of your pieces. If no move is forced, look for moves that increase the range of one of your pieces. 9 times out of 10 the game is won by the better developed player.

(6) as for books, they're generally overrated, but if you enjoy them try tactical puzzle books (e.g., "Combination Challenge) and endgame puzzle books.

(7) Go over your lost games starting with the last move and working back to the beginning. That way you can identify the point where your opponent clinched it, then work backwards to discover how you got to that position. Frequently there was an earlier subtler mistake that subjected you to pressure that led to the final mistake.

Any other ideas on improvement, teammates?

RayLopez

Good ideas ray

Message:
Those are excellent ideas for improving your chess playing here at gameknot...my two cents would be,

1) To look at the position and identify any candidate moves that you see. See if you can find at least 3 possible moves to make in the position. Then pick the best looking one and try to forsee the consequences of the move. Using a chessboard is a great help (and a great advantage of correspondance chess). If you don't like the way things seem to work out, go back and analyze a different original candidate move. Sometimes you will be able to forsee potentially deadly threats that may arise for your opponent. Sometimes you can then make early moves to neutralise these threats. If you are stuck for candidate moves, Ray's 4) and 5) should hopefully suggest some good ideas. This should improve your positional play a bit.

2) Examine EVERY check & capture avaliable to you. Tactical devices eg pins may be avaliable too, examine those as well. Remember "Patzer sees a check, Patzer gives a check" but it is still good to examine the consequences of said checks and captures. Are there loose pieces on the board ie. unprotected pieces? These may be subject to a tactical device. This should improve your tactical play. Be aware sometimes there is no tactical possibilities, therefore strategy/positional play is then very important.

3)Think hard for your opponent. If you can find a nice trick for him/her in a possible line or a refutation to your sneaky trap, then count on him/her finding it as well. Don't take chances with dubious traps or one-trick suckerpunches. Try to play solidly and surely for an advantage, and always have a plan/direction for your game.

Well I guess thats 3 ideas, so thats my three cents :) anyone else?

Won a team game at last! Thanks to "analyse the board"

Look out for a second win soon, fingers crossed.

I'm still prone to getting beaten (humiliated!) by the stronger players in the team, but please keep challenging me to games so I can learn, and you can laugh.

I like a good thrashing (ooh!)

Anyone need help?

Message:
Anyone under around 1500 or so that is. At my local club there are always around 2 or 3 lower rated guys that want to improve, but they don’t exactly know how. Most of them end up hanging around the higher rated guys when they are going over a game.

We don’t have that method available here. CM2003’s question seems to be the next best thing. The suggestions given here so far all sound great and anybody following them would surely improve. And halfpast yellow's suggestions are worth way more than 3 cents in future game score points. But sometimes it takes some personal input to have effective results. Some of the club players don’t understand how some things work until they see it on the board. Anyway…if anybody below 1500 or so wants some improvement help with their game, and is serious, let me know. We can work on it.

P.S…..to demuziekdoos
My team games vs. ‘pardon’ of ‘Italians Do it Better’ are going okay so far. But he’s no push over as you can tell by his overall score of 24-5-2. Luckily I’m half Italian. I’m hoping a couple of my GK14 tourney games will end soon so maybe you can assign me a couple of more games.

Thanks for the help

Message:
Thanks for all the help. One of my main problems is that I move to fast. I see what is a good move and just do it with out looking at the rest of the broad. This is something I'm working on. I have just made it to the 2nd round of GK14 tourney at the under 1300. I took my time in those games and was 6 an 0. My team games are going OK 3 good games, 2 not so good but fighting, and 1 that is going OK. Again thanks for the help.

Go Team!!!!!!!!!!!

Today I had to decline an invitation because at this moment only 3 players in our team are available. All the others are playing the maximum requested games. I will post a new teamtable this next weekend.

I'm working on some very old matches we played. I will post the outcome of that also this weekend.

Enjoy chess!

the status of some of my matches.
Against mrbenoni I got a win (1-0) but I'm in a really bad position in the second tough game. I foresee (1-1).

Against scavenger a win for me which put my team score on the positive side (+1). The second game is not clear enough.

It's too soon to talk about the other matches.

Internet connection problems at home makes me to move in the office and this is bad and good at the same time. Bad because I haven't so much time to analyse the games, I hope don't make blunders; and good because I can dedicate more time to play guitar at home. I got the guitar partiture to the ragtime music from the film "The Entertainer" (I hope is written rigth, the spanish title is "El golpe").

Good luck to everybody in your games.

Game update

Message:
Hello team….nice to see everyone interested in opening theory according to Cynics. Just a note to let you know my opponent ‘pardon’ from ‘Italians do it Better’ made a hasty move and blundered. He has now resigned that game and the other still goes on. My highest respects to him because it was somewhat of a surprise that he resigned so soon. I was getting used to GK players playing down to their last pawn.

2003-IX-19 ..vs.. Pawn Cocktail ( 0.5 : 3.5 )

You can see some very old matches (december last year, april etc). I’m working on other results.
How about challenging the teams we lost sometime in the near future again, so we can try to win a match from that team (like Singergia2003, we lost that one with big numbers).

CU all next week, perhaps a small post during the week, but not as big as this one.

Enjoy chess!

1st Moves

I always start with the King's pawn, something I learnt from childhood as the best way to begin. Is that a good thing?

I do seem to flounder when opponents start with something else, or don't reply with their own king's pawn, ie. they refuse to go "face to face".

Any tips or suggestions?

1st Moves

Message:
G'day Dean :) The Kings pawn is an excellent way to begin, and I would advise sticking with what you know. It usually allows you to get your Kingside Knight and Bishop out and castle into safety quickly.

My advice would be , when your opponent refuses to go face to face with you, is to look at what has been played. If they have moved their Kings pawn or their Queens Bishop pawn out one square, ie e6 or c6, then you should play your Queens pawn out two to d4, grabbing the centre. When your opponent replys with his Queens pawn , then simply capture it with your e-pawn, the 'exchange' variation. What your should get is two pawns 'face to face' on d5, then you should be able to develop your pieces without too much trouble.

Against 1...c5 you could try 2.c3, with the idea of playing d4 and getting a strong pawn centre. If Black replys with his King's Knight to f6, then you must advance your pawn forward, attacking the knight. When it moves, you can then play d4. Black's other good replying move is ...d5, his Queens pawn out two. In this case you must capture with your e-pawn, and he should retake with the Queen.

Against anything else, ie. d6, g6, it is best to play 2.d4 then try to develop normally. Against 1...Nf6, defend your pawn with Nc3.

Against tandersson32 the result was 0-2. He was simply better than me.

Against scavenger the result 1-1. I won the first one but in the second game I got some advantage (I think so) and I did a blunder in movement 29. That chess !

Thus I'm going down to the negative score side again.
