As you can tell our team has taken some big hits as a result of lost games and illnesses. As everyone should know by now Nelson had a serious illness that resulted in his games going timeout. Hopefully Nelson will be able to rejoin the team and begin play sometime in the near future. I was then notified by wissem about the death of his father and understandibly his games have not been the best and he asked me not to schedule him any more games for a while. I am sorry for his loss and wish him well. Then March13b has a serious medical problem and she needs an operation and has her games, at my request, postponed for 30 days. I hope she has a speedy recovery. Today Bigh contacted me and he has asked that I do not assign him any more games due to work and other committments. He says he will play out his games to the best of his ability but his future with the team is uncertain. I told him that I would keep him on an "inactive" list and if and when he wants more games to let me know. I also said that if he wanted to be removed from the team to let me know that also. I will leave that up to him. In a nutshell, the team has taken a pounding but I am still here and we still plugging along. I have been trying to keep things going and we will make a comeback and be competitive again. Just as Bigh did today by contacting me and letting me know his status but he will finish his games that is how it should be done. I will not be getting any "new" people soon until the present situation settles down and I can see and think as to what to do or better yet how to do it. In that thread, if you care t olook I asked that Mike to decide on one individual rating system Right now two are being shown the GK system and the Elo. I also asked that Mike decide how the teams will be ranked. We have been looking at the team score and the team rating for quite a while now. Mike posted in that thread that within a week all the members will be polled as to what individual rating system they would rather have. Keep the present GK system or go to a more iniversally accepted Elo system. Personally I prefer the Elo system because it is much more rational and goes along with the rest of the chess world. We can discuss the differences in the two systems if you like. He also promised to poll all theteam captains within 2 weeks concerning how the teams should be ranked. Either keep the team score or go to the team rating When the new team rating first came out I was a little skeptical of it because I could not see how it would be better and therefore why change. After some thought and looking at it I can see how it is beneficial to the smaller teams to compete on a team rating system. A small team can win games and raise their team rating and not have to worry about having to play huge numbers of games. Personally I do not want to go after more team members so we can compete with the larger teams. If we keep the team score system that is exactly what we will have to do. I do not like the idea of getting more people. It looks like Bigh may not be able to play with us much longer. I am leaving that decision for him. Roland may be inactive for a while and his future may also be kind of "iffy". Right now we have 18 members and if Roland and Bigh decide to leave the team that would leave us with 16. If that happens I would like to remain at 16 or even lower if other people decide to leave. I hope that Roland will be able to remain a team member because he has been a good contributor and a good team member. So, hopefully, in the next month Mike will finally end the GK rating system debate for both he teams and the individuals. Afterwhich I am sure there will be other "improvements" that perpetually discontented people will try to make and new debates will arise but the GK individual rating system is a positive change if it goes to the Elo system. If any of you guys have comments or questions please post them here for all to see and discuss. If no one has any comments or questions when the time comes for the team captains to decide how the teams will be ranked I will vote as I deem necessary.

To me, it seems more sense for a site like Gameknot to allow its members to compare their ratings here to other places. ELO is a better system because it is a global system.

Message: When the team captains are polled and when the outcome of that vote comes to light I will then decide to stay with the number of people we have left or to take on some to replace any that are gone. What do I mean? If the team ranking system remains as is that is by team score then I will need to recruit another couple of bodies in order to compete. If the team ranking system is changed so that it is done by team rating then we can remain at whatever we have left. Upcoming is no longer on the team. Bigh I believe will finish his remaining games and will more than likely leave or remain "inactive" that is still not determined. Roland has asked to be put as "inactive" because of his job area. He is being assigned to a place that will not have internet access. How long that will be I have no idea. Presently we have 18 people on this team. With the loss of Bigh and Roland that will leave us with 16. I have to say that the 16 remaining are good team members and we would be able to compete under the team rating system but if the vote comes out to be to stick with the team score as we are using now then we may have to make up for lost people. When the time comes I will ask each of you for your opinions. A new Update will come out tomorrow. So far the Wins outnumber the losses. :-]

chuckventimiglia 10/02/2003 06:11:23 [ report this post ]	This morning I received..... Message: a bunch of timeouts from a totally unexpected source. One of our long time members. Comes at a very bad time for the team. To be honest with everyone I am getting the feeling that my time and effort is being wasted. There is no sense to play team chess if we are to just lose by timeouts. I have not counted the number of timeouts we have received in the past 2 months but it exceeds 20 games. Nelson could not help his but the others could have been prevented. If anyone is tired of team play or simply does not have the time for it let me know. Finish the games you do have and simply leave the team.

chuckventimiglia 10/03/2003 06:07:13 [ report this post ]	Our slide continues!!! Message: Seems like there is no end to the downward slide of our team. Yesterday we received 5 or so timeouts from a very long member and now today we received the first what may be many timeouts from another long time member. We are in #16 with the possiblity of going further down. I am continuing to get matches but I only hope the true picture of our team emerges and we can restructure and become competitive again. Do not be surprised if we see another bunch of timeouts.

Just do your best and win or lose that is fine. Timeouts are killing us. Looks like Roland has joined the missing. He has gotten 2 timeouts so far with the possibility of 9 more. Hope he is ok, that is my real worry. Some timeouts are not preventable like Nelson They were not preventable. The team will go on no matter what but we need to reverse this downward slide.

chuckventimiglia 10/04/2003 13:00:45 [ report this post ]	Please read!! Message: Today I heard from Night_Trap girlfriend. Seems Rob has been having numerous internet problems and that is what caused his timeouts. He has the rest of his games postponed and will get his problem fixed and then return to the team. R_Lawrence has disappeared off the radar screen. His games are all going timeout. Do not know what to think with that. Hope he is ok and I hope we hear from him. We are still going on as a team. We need to hit bottom before we figure what to do. We have some good team players so once we are through this bad period we will be able to compete again.
