Subject: The Cynical Cynics team thread 13

Message:
Hello team,

Here is our new teamthread. Let's hope this number is a lucky number ;-)

A lot of games ended in the last 12 hours. The results are by a lot of you posted in thread number 12. You will read the results in the teamtable in this weekend.

I do have to tell you that deancolmer timed out in twelve (!) of his last games. Several games for our teamtournament and 2 teammatches. He has been online 1 day and 20 hours ago so I’m wondering if he timed out deliberately. He has only 5 remaining games. I've placed him under the non active players for the moment. I will ask him what happened.

A small match started a few minutes ago: we play a match with Team Canada

board #1249869 _____ superdonald (1464) – jimmyjohn (1419)
board #1249870 _____ superdonald (1464) – jimmyjohn (1419)
board #1249871 _____ iepltom (1007) – natattack (966)
board #1249872 _____ iepltom (1007) – natattack (966)

Enjoy your games, and keep your posts coming!

Looking to gain some points

Message:
Since GameKnot switched to Elo ratings, my opponents in team matches have been a lot closer to me in skill level than they were before when I seemed to be overmatched every time. So I hope to start posting some good wins soon, and will try to get my total score back to a respectable level.

ELO ratings

Message:
The new ratings system is nice. Most of my past games I felt that the person I was playing was alot better than me but we had the same rating. Now the games are alot closer.

a few results, a record, time-outs

Message:
Hello team,

The other two matches deancolmer played got lost by time out (no moves made) as well. I just wrote him a message to ask him if he is ok and tell us what is going on.. The last time he was online was 2 days and 5 hours ago. Perhaps he is having computerproblems, he can be ill, etc. I hope he can explain why he is timing out in all his games.

omus lost a game from tokirapa, doesn’t matter at all, I hope you enjoyed the game. I wish you good luck in your other games.

And to finish with sdr46. I’m not sure but I guess it is a teamrecord. He finished a teamgame within 24 hours (opponent was tzaca) and he won this game. Congratulations sdr46!

Enjoy Chess!

Slav - reply to SDR, omus

Message:
SDR,

Thanks for your reply. I had forgotten that there was a 4..a6 option. I'm definitely going to try it out. Good advice, teammate!

Omus,

I am somewhat obsessive about trying to learn openings. One of them is called the "Slav," which actually means the Slav variation of the Queens Gambit Declined. It goes 1d4 d5 2 c4 c6. A few moves later Black ends up taking the c-pawn, so it's actually, I suppose, a variation of the Queens Gambit Accepted! In any case, the Slav proper is considered a pretty safe way to deal with the Queens Gambit. You get your Queen Bishop out to f5 or g4 before closing up the diagonal with e6, so you have a less cramped position than in the normal Queens Gambit Declined, where the Queen Bishop often becomes a "problem child" that can't be easily developed. On the negative side you have to watch out for White playing Qb3 and grabbing your b-pawn.

For some reason that I find difficult to explain, the main line of the Slav, in which you accept the gambit and bring your Queen Bishop out early, doesn't work as well if White plays 3 e3 or 4 e3 (instead of bringing both knights out on moves 3 and 4). I think it's because White can retake the c-pawn right away and doesn't have to waste time playing a4 to prevent Black from protecting the c4 pawn with ..b5. So I tried a different setup known as the Schlechter variation, in which Black fianchettos the King Bishop (4..g6, 5...Bg7). It didn't work very well for me.

Another option is to play both ..c6 and ...e6. This is called the Semi-Slav. It shuts in your Queen Bishop, as in the normal Queen Gambit Declined, but enables you to advance your queen side pawns quickly as in the Slav proper. But, for some reason, it's very complicated to learn.

Hope this satisfies your curiosity!

Message:
has ended with a draw against tennisball.
I started the match not playing very well and I was succesful in losing the first game quickly.
In the second one after a tough game I was not confident to win and I was in a doubt. Finally I have accepted the proposed draw game but I'm not sure if it was the right decision.

The game is board #1101750 what do you thin teammates ?

My son (superdonald) won his first teamgame yesterday for the team. If you do not include wins by time-outs it might be one of the shortest games of our team ever.

4. Ng5 Bc5
5. Nxf7 Bxf2+
6. Kxf2 Nxe4+

I was reading a bedtime story to our daughter when he came in rushing and telling me that he won a teammatch. He was so happy. I first didn't believe him, all his teamgames just started. As you can see he was right.

I will post very soon about two teammatches that have finished.

A win and two losses

Message:
I am happy to report that I beat Ekh2 of the Sea Lions, to even my score against him. But I'm unhappy to report that I lost to A Professional Idiot (LOL!) of the Global Bounty Hunters (GREAT team name!) and to Jeffrey1976 of the Dolphins. As Black, Ekh2 played a Pirc Defense, which I find easy to beat. As White, A Professional Idiot played a Kings Indian Reversed, and Jeffrey1976 played an English Opening, neither of which I see very much of. I should have held my own against those two. Sorry about that, team. I will probably beat A Professional Idiot in our other game, but lose to Jeffrey1976 in my other game against him.

Update

Message:
I havn't been playing that good lately. My team record is 2 and 7. I'm playing three team games right now. One game is going bad against gustert. I have already lost one game to gustert. My other two games against jtmoney are going good. I use an English opening on jtmoney and Queen's Gambit Declined. I don't think jtmoney has seen the English opening that much. I use it some times and have done pretty good with it in the past.

I have more time to play chess and can take more time to think in my games so things will turn around in my play.

And to answer the question of diogenes, our teamtournament is not finished yet . You can find it by looking at one of the the teammembers (for instance me) and look at the Cynical Cynics mini tournament. If you click the link to a game you will find a link to the tournament as well

I would like to have another teamtournament after this one is finished, I have to tell you that we will have several big problems with a new tournament, I’ll explain the problems when we all intend to play another teamtournament.

I made a quick new teamtable, I did not look at the ratings so they might be a bit of, it’s just the number of games we all are playing. As you all can see I don’t have much options for new teammatches at this moment. If one comes our way I will offcourse accept but it will all be small matches.

does anyone reckon

Message:
it would be a good idea for a team to play another team (2 games ...black/white) and the moves decided by a team vote??

Thanks for the support. I was thinking that someone like me could learn from better players, like yourself, demuziekdoos and others. i.e. if we all chipped in with our suggested moves, the better players can show us what move would be the best. My game would certainly improve.

We can do the game like this

Message:
We can set up 2 sub-teams within our team, each headed by one person as sub-captain. We then divide the team players into the 2 sub-teams. Each sub-team can email the sub-captain(and everyone else on the sub-team) with their ideas on the game, and the 2 sub-captains make the moves against each other.

Sounds like a great idea to me.

Good news! arathlion has resigned both his games against me (I think that he had too many games to handle, as both games were only about four moves long). I have won one game against sasquatch and am up three pieces and a queen in the other. Against pele2003, I have won one game, and I am up the exchange in the ending in the other.

I love the idea of a team consultation match. Another possible way to do it would be for each player of the team to make several moves, then pass the game on to somebody else. Either way would be very cool.

I just won 1 game from Pecto-Pecto of the Clockwork team. The other is even with a slight tilt towards me so far. Slowly, slowly, I am climbing out of my pit.

Kibitz match.

Message:
I love the idea of the consultation match. One of the greatest things I enjoy is analyzing a completed or partly finished game with an opponent. I don't get many chances to do this, well only really with teammember Pigonthe7th in our OTB games, and he has so much more knowledge than myself that it's a great help. However we go about organising this 'match' , count me in!

Also I will post an update on team game results soon.

well

Message:
seems as if there is interest in the consultation game. i was originally thinking of a game against another team, but.......

provided we have our Captains blessing( He is steering this Ship very well ) why dont we delegate the responsibility to someone in the team to organise it as they think fit. Sadly, I have too much on my plate. Any takers???

consultation match....

Message:
I think sdr46 has got it!!.......we would need to know how many players are in, and the two strongest players (if they don't mind) could pick the teams......also it would allow 'casual' players like me ;-) to improve and help to develop the team...

Update.

Message:
G’day team, I am very pleased to report a 2-0 victory to me in my match with bdbor of ‘Italians do it better’. My first victory in a teammatch and a cleansweep! Despite the lopsided score my worthy opponent challenged me hard in both games. I also had an early resignation from my opponent longshanks of ‘Nemisis’, but playing as black I did have a small material and a fairly large positional advantage. Playing white vs gagarin we had a short draw in a blocked position which either one of us was not able to make much of. Gagarin is a 1900+ player so I was happy to draw him and our second game in progress does not look too dangerous.

Sadly my opponent Kumpansangel of the team ‘Chessworld of peace’ timed out in both our games today. I am not aware of the circumstances of my opponent, and although rated lower than me the games were tough and as white I believe I was playing poorly. It is two lucky points for the match with ‘Chessworld of peace’ I don’t think I would earned and I hope it does not spoil the match between our two teams.

I’m all for this consultation game, should all volunteers post an aye in the team thread?

Consultation game

Message:
I have taken part in one consultation game. It was for the South Island of New Zealand against the North Island (even though I lived in the North Island - I am really a South Islander). I pulled out after a few moves as it was total chaos with DOZENS of emails arriving daily, all confusing and none relating to each other. Once my inbox got to over 300 emails (and we weren't at move 10!) I gave up. One Friday night I went to supervise at a school dance for ONE hour. I came home to 20 confused and confusing messages. I gave up. The concept was supposed to be simple. We voted for our favourite move and the most popular was played. But it didn't work out as expected as people started sending in analysis to convince others. It was just too, too much.

5 or 6 of us interested, any more??? doesn't matter if its 3 a side?? playera can play playerb in an unrated game and it may be interesting to put the weaker players in charge of making the moves (and listening to the stronger players).
I reckon it would be great if we actually played another team in order to create more of a team atmosphere.

also....

Message:
it can work without captains being burdened....first player in each team to nominate a move sends a message to rest of the team....second player does the same but includes first players move in message....third includes first and second and so on.....last player would send all team members a complete list of the possible moves...then it's down to a vote.

I don't think every player should be obliged to nominate or vote on every move....i would prefer to take a back seat anyeay and learn from the better players....

Using separate threads is best

Message:
I don't think that a consultation game would work against another team well.
But if we set up separate threads for each sub-team, and take a word of honor of each sub-team not to look at the other sub-team's thread during the game, then we can do it without burdening the sub-captain with tons of emails.
I nominate Omus and Diogenes to be the sub-captains. Umpito, Half Past Yellow and myself have already stated their wishes to join. Anybody else want to join? I say we give another week to see who else wants to join. At that point Diogenes should take the players whose nicknames start with A-L and Omus takes those with M-Z. If they want or need to make changes to even out the sub-teams then they can negotiate between themselves.
They then can start a challenge game between Diogenes and Omus, and set up 2 threads. They tell their respective sub-team members where to find the threads and ,voila, we can start playing.
I hope you don't mind that I made up all these rules myself. It's just that if we keep talking, we'll never get started.

i agree with you 100%. lets do it. also 3 days per move. Match to start 1800 hrs this Sunday evening GMT, I'll challenge Diogenes. Other team members can join a few moves into the game if they want to get involved. Lets go all out for a win but lets learn from others. But lets get the blessing of Paul, our team leader, this is courteous: he is doing a great job.

consultation game

Message:
The consultation game idea sounds interesting, but I fear I will only have time to be an observer. Good luck to all, and I hope it's a great success.
P.S. ...perhaps the teams should be divided into two groups of equal rating to give the best chance of a balanced game.
