Message: I would like to welcome the newest member of Vlad's Impalers -- Zormaster, who has the sexy name of Natacha-Michelle
We have initiated a thorough vetting process for new members, but Zor was able to shortcircuit it a tad because I have known her for a while yet on the Net. She is a strong player. Here is some background which she has provided to me over time.
Zor is a dual citizen of Russia, where she was born, in the year -- no, I won't say when -- but she is still what we call a spring chicken -- and The Netherlands, where she arrived in 1991. She is currently studying medicine at Leiden University and wishes to become an orthopedic surgeon. If she does, then perhaps she can buy life memberships for all her teammates. :)
She has been playing chess since she was 13 and is a Women's FIDE Master with a FIDE rating of 2307. She started playing the game by accident at her Dad's Club, and nothing has held her back since then. I have had the pleasure of playing quite a few games with her at other chess sites.
Despite her demonstrated skill at chess, she has no ambition to be a professional player.
Her hobbies include horse riding, sailing, dancing, reading books with classic themes, plus she is a fan of Robert Ludlum.

1/01/2004 07:09:46 [ report this post ] | About your PC
Message: Happy new year Peter (and all other's)
I've worked with computer's for 20 years (am CNE & MCSE) so i can give it a try :)
What operating system are you using?
Have you done a complete chech for viruses or other nasty stuff?
If using Windows 2000 or XP, go into "taskmanager" by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Delete and
chose "Processes". The following SHOULD be running:
explorer.exe
iexplorer.exe (if using internet explorer as browser)
services.exe
spoolsv.exe
svchost.exe (a couple of 'em)
system
taskmgr.exe
winlogon.exe
plus some other that might be there....
If you have other processes running, kill them one by one and check if it makes
any difference. If killing a process solves the case, make a search on internet to
find out what the process is for. If virus\trojan\spyware get rid of them as soon
as possible, either be running a antivirus program or uninstalling the program that
might have installed the process.
Have you changed\installed anything recently on the PC? Nowadays many so called
"free" software come with very suspicious "features" :( Try uninstall the latest
programs you've added, one by one, to see if it helps....
If it not helps, go to windows update and make sure you've got all the latest stuff
installed, also reinstall service pack (no.1 if windows XP).
As last measure, reinstall or REPAIR the operating system. Booting the PC with
the windows CD gives you the opportunity to do this.
If nothing of the above helps you might considering there could be some faulty
hardware in you PC. Try removing the hardware, starting with the latest added
and pray to higher powers that you find somthing cheap and easy to change
was corrupt :)
For further help\details you know how to reach me Pete....
Take care,
/Peter Sjoroos

Message: 2004 started off with a bad omen, with a loss. It came at the hands of a FIDE GM and is understandable, but a loss nonetheless.
However, that was quickly followed with 3 wins, all by our newest teammate, the lovely Zor -- that included a mate in 13. :)
We have had 3 new teammates in the last month or so, terryaki, lazar60001, and zormaster. The team has been piling on talent.
As the intro to our team page say: "If you consider yourself a person with excellent or growing skills and character, join us! We shall remain the best team at Gameknot, and, with you, we will continue to reign!"
If you know anyone who can develop, let's get him on the team.

1/02/2004 02:15:00 [ report this post ] | Mateintwo
Message: The issue you raise on a team rating is one I dealt with before. Rather than rehash the matter, I will quote from a message I already wrote. I would prefer not to respond in public to the matter because it is best discussed privately, but the issue was made public and I have to respond in that manner. Items in brackets are where I have changed the language for discretion or clarity.
"***As you know, my team has players with high ratings, with most of the lower ratings coming from time outs or personel problems. [My player] had personel problems, which I did not consider it appropriate to inquire about, that led to [the] current rating.
***
But let us also be honest.
1. [The] rating was reached within the GK system, and the decrease in rating was not made with any intent to benefit by being matched against inferior opponents. In other words, we had no intent to create a ringer. In fact, I have been concerned that, if there is a mismatch, [my teammate] may be bored. We come here to enjoy ourselves. I don't know any good player who thinks it enjoyable to beat inferior opponents.
2. I presented [my teammate] as part of the challenge to your team, which [you] reciprocated with your choice of a player.
3. While I understand your concern, I don't think it was incumbent upon us to disclose [my teammate's] prior rating or even that there were personal problems. [The] rating level was public information.
4. The real problem is with the methodology for calculating the GK ratings. I play at Stan's which has been introducing a system, currently being kept in informal form til finalization, that prevents such drops of ratings. I think the problem of rating calculation is one that has to be addressed with GK."
.
If a captain is careless enough not to look at the opponents presented, I don't believe I or my team can be faulted. Each captain has a responsibility to his team which he cannot dodge by blaming it on the opposing captain.

I'm not sure if the point count is updated instantly or overnight. █ Poland █ has 320 points in ***3170*** points. We shall surpass them quickly. With a little effort by the end of the month.
Of course, on a average points per game, we are well ahead.
