Subject: Global Bounty Hunters 32

Message:
I would like to quietly start a new thread...as a new member of the team.

I was wondering what our best team score haas been in the recent past...say a year.
Does anyone know?

awwwww

Message:
look who got to start a thread! ;) i think our best score in the last year was maybe in the -30s but im not sure it was legit because i came back on day and mike reset the scores because he said there was a glitch so im not sure we have been in the minus 50s for sometime. i think we might actually be on our way. seems we had a good team day today. h.o.w. timeouts are as good as checkmates as far as im concerned. they certainly counted against us so i will surely take them in our favor. one thing to think about.... i know some dont want many games but.... more games gives you more chances you will get matched with someone that times out. this may sound like a cheap tactic but its part of this type of chess. i understand some are not willing to take more games just for the chance of timeouts but.. like i said its just a thought. go gbh!!!!!!!!!

It pains me to say that I am not doing well against my first team opponent right
now. I'm bruised, bleeding, and panting. BUT the sword is still in my hand, AND I
am enjoying the struggle. Not that I'm a masochist or anything! I think I am just
learning to love this game.

2 net points to the positive for each player this month

whisky insights

Message:
daddysgirl is on the button. For the fact she is losing personal games, thems the breaks, her opportunity for good match-ups is then improved. With ELO there is greater accuracy on your rating and more "central trend" towards a 50% win/loss ratio. Over time, statistically we will all tend to win and lose around 50% of our games (draws being ignored for this exercise). This will occur because of the counter-balance of the ELO ratings system.

So, how to get ahead with your team games? The only way I can see is to ensure that your non team games are reasonably plentiful and not soft. Try avoiding games that will cause unnecessary ratings inflation. I now do this by playing league chess and tourny on occasion and always trying to ensure that my average opponents rating in personal matches is above my own. It's perfectly legitimate and ethical to play tougher opponents outside of your team games and also it helkps the learning curve. It's taken me some time to figure this one out but I'm sold on the idea of a balanced portfolio of matches...Go GBH

about playing higher rated opponents

Message:
rich you are right this is completely ethical.. im sure all people do this or most. matter of fact its good to have an average of opponents above your own. now to play these games with the intention of loseing would be unethical. i play many rateings. sometimes i win and sometimes i lose. i think elo will not allow too much abuse of this anyway. its a better system than the old gk. one thing i have found with the new elo is that 100 points rateing system is too much in most cases. with the old gk it was ok now 100 points usually decides the winner. although i think with higher rated opponents it makes less difference. for instance someone with 2000 rateing i believe could play with someone 2200. at least play to a draw. tambori, hell on wheels, or shoshin could probably answer that better than me though. along with a few others.

A Technical Problem

Message:
There is a technical problem with one of my games and wouldn't you know it, it
happens to be my team match game against tiptronic. It says that I am in check,
but I'm not. My pawn on e4 is being mistaken for my king! So I sent a messge to
the webmaster and to stinky and postponed my games so that I don't timeout
before the problem can be fixed.

Anything similar ever happen to anyone else?

Elo

Message:
There is one good feature built into the Elo rating system. It does a good job of stopping ratings manipulation. The more games you play, the slower your ratings change. So you cannot deliberately lose games to lower your ratings. Thus, the more games you play, the more honest your rating.

Dear Global Bounty Hunters,
For the past few weeks, our score improvement has been excellent. There were also personal victories that have surged during this period of time, notably Richardwyles.
