can you explain the new team ranking method??? I do not understand. e.g. If i am going to lose a team game would it be better for the team if I waited till i lost other non team games i was on the verge of losing???
We are now ranked 18!!!!! But i dont find this satisfying unless the old ranking method was unfair.

I don't like the new ranking system at all. Now if feel I can't play any non-team games because it could hurt the team if I lose. My non-team games are for me and the team games are for the team. Please go back to the old system. We are only 71 points out of the top 25. We have played 922 games to get the rank of 36 and new number one team has only played 25 games, has 3 members and has been a team for 3 months. The Cynical Cynics have been a team for one year and four months. A new team should not be put into first place because there players are high rated. If that is the case, this team should drop all players under 1600 and be in first place. The number one spot should be the team that has earned it. This new ranking system only hurts the top team. The Dutchables have played 3217 and have been a team for almost two years. Thier top spot was earned and was a goal all teams were looking to reach. I have beaten a member of the Dutchables and was happy because I new he was on the number one team. They droped from 1 to 47. This new ranking system suckes. If this is the way teams are ranked why have teams??????????

The new ranking system is very bad, the old one wasn't good either but I started a thread about a complete new system. The problem here at GK is that nobody will think about new ideas and now we are stuck with another very bad system.
Why is the ranking system very bad? Very simple, if a teamcaptain challenges another team you try to match the ratings of the players so both players have an equal chance. If all the players from both teams have about the same rating you might expect the outcome to be a close match (eg if you play 12 games the result should be close to 6-6). The problem is that if one team has a higher team rating they will LOOSE teamrating points due to the fact that the match is even.
It's impossible for me to find fair matches now. I will only accept a match if the rating diffrence between the team ratings equals the diffrence between player ratings.
Example:
Team A (teamrating 1100) sends a challenge to team B (teamrating 1300) with 3 players rated 1600, 1700 and 1800.
If I was the captain of team B I would only accept with players 200 points higher (the teamrating diffrence) to keep the match based on elo fair. Team B will win the match by about 4-2 (based on the expected outcome due to the personal ratings) but gain no teamrating points. You can see that for the individual players it's no fun anymore. The only option is to play against teams with about the same teamrating and that means you can't play many teammatches anymore.
I'm afraid that this will mean we will play not as many games as we used to. I will try to find us teammatches but I'm afraid the team play is going to die.
Let's not get our heads down, try to win your games and enjoy this fine game. We will see what will happen.

I am playing mlka in 3 games (we have finished our 4th game). Because of my commitments to our school musical production at work I took leave and sent a lengthy explanation why I was taking leave and that on my odd free night I would try and send a move in order to keep the games going. I asked that if I did make a move for my leave not to be cancelled but this opponent did just that. I don't think this is very sporting. What do others in our team think?

Not only is it not sporting, it is out of order especially when you have provided an explanation. mlka should be glad that you are able to make the occasional move to keep the game going. I don't think t should be possible for opponenets to cancel the leave.

While I am not on your team, and we are playing games, and I did not cancel the postponement, it was your fault. Once you postpone a game, you need to NOT make ANY moves in ANY games. This keeps your postponement in effect. Cannot be cancelled. If you make moves, then you allow your postponement to be cancelled. Postpone, go away, do not make moves and all is well. There are some jerks who cancel every postponement no matter the reason.

He wrote a message to all the players not to cancel the postponement if he made a move in the weekends, he would play if he was able to to keep the games going. Your player mlka did cancel the postponement and wrote a very rude comment to my player.
Would you be so kind to tell your player about good sportmanship? It would be very nice if he offered his appologies to my player.

If lyakin answers my message we will play this team again in the future and depending if mlka is willing to offer an appology we can decide if we accept a challenge with him as well. If he does not appologies put him on your ignorelist and just beat him. He will never play you again!

Does any of you know what can be wrong with him? And what to do if he is timing out due to something he could have prevented? Like docd already posted it seems that thewizardofchess is having computer problems. He has been online and set his vacation flag for 7 days. He didn’t answer my message but I guess the remarks he made by his games (talking about computer problems) makes everything clear. He set the vacation flag for 7 days, let’s hope he is able to solve his computer problems in this time.

The teamtable is – IMHO – not working on ELO, yesterday we were on place 19 and now we are on place 72. Perhaps after a few wins we will be in the top 20 again tomorrow. It is very difficult to find us matches. I’ve asked several teamcaptains and I still have no answer. I guess we have to go for quality instead of quantity of games. Just keep playing your games you used to, if you draw a game and we loose rating points, don’t care. We play chess for fun but accepting every challenge just for the sake of teamgames and end up last due to the rating system isn’t an option either.

I see we have lost 7 points in the last week. I hope this new system isn't the end of team play. I really like playing team games and being part of this team. I know I'm at the bottom of the list in score for the team but I have been playing better and should be at a positive score soon. 11 - 0 - 4 in the last 15 games, that is team and non-team games. I'm not sure what we can do to fix the system for the team rankings. I have posted in the forum "Team ranking" and said that I don't like this new system and that it is unfair. I feel that team play may be dead. I hope this isn't true but team games are hard to get and if you lose a few games you drop 53 places with no idea of what it takes to get back up in the rankings. Post in the forum "Team ranking" and send messages to Mike telling him how you feel about the new system and about team play. I just have one question. Is team play dead?

Guys (/gals?),
Let's take matters into our own hands. If there is a consensus on this team that we don't like team ELO rankings, let's just opt out of the system! Unless I'm mistaken and it's not available to non-premium members, everybody has the ability to configure the team table the way they want by simply clicking the little arrow at the top of the "score" column if you want to see the ranking by won/lost score. Let's just agree we're going to do that and that's how we'll view our team standing.
I have suggested this approach to the teams at large on the "team ranking" forum of the "team play" meta-forum, as well as the idea that Mike make it possible to choose won-lost score ranking by clicking a "customize this list" button at the top of the teams table.

I took an 30 day break because of my move to university in Wellington, but now my games are about to expire so this nice girl Tamsyn is letting me borrow her laptop to access gameknot! I've decided - due to the way this thread was ended - that I will quit playing team games at once. This means that from now on I will not accept any challenges nor will I look for new ones. You guys have to make a choice who will be the new teamcaptain. I think bigmick should be teamcaptain again because he started this team but if he is not willing (or not able) any other player (not superdonald, he will possibly quit as well) can become team captain.
I want you to discuss who has to become the new team captain. If you reach consensus the new teamcaptain has to send a message to the webmaster to change the captainship to him. If a message from me to the webmaster is needed that I agree I will send the webmaster this message.
The moment this team has a new team captain I will resign from the team. I will finish my two remaining team games (with a win for you if possible).
This is also my last post here at GK. I will continue to play games - and finish my games for the team mini tournament - and enjoy the game of chess. Perhaps we meet someday in a game.

Yes, I fully understand your position. For the first time, IMHO, the webmaster has been a little undiplomatic. Perhaps he is under a little pressure from life's little problems that affect us all.
Yes, the team games do seem a little meaningless for me now and I also considered not playing any more team games (or just keeping my finger in with the odd game).
Firstly, after the dust has settled, perhaps Paul will reconsider. If he is still adamant then BigMick gets my vote as he Founded the Team.
