if i understand your question right, i would have to answer with "english openings"
here are some lines for you my friend:
english: 1. c4 e5, 2.Nc3 Nc6, 3. g3 d6, 4. Bg2 Be6 5. d3 Qd7
four knights: 1. c4 e5, 2. Nc3 Nf6, 3. Nf3 Nc6, 4. g3 Bb4, 5.Bg2 0-0 [4... Bc5, 5.d3 0-0]
my favorite is the ultra symmetrical: 1.c4 c5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.g3 g6 4.Bg2 Bg7 from there on are many ways to play with Nf3 (...e5), e4(...Nf6), e3(...e6) and a3(...a6).
check it out, it's fun, and often you can push the opponents buttons with it, because they often think that you just copy their moves and then try some less effective move to see if you'll copy that as well and there you go then...
oh, and if you are interested into working on your openings i suggest:
Modern Chess Openings (MCO) by Nick de Firmian.
I have MCO-14 (ISBN 0-8129-3084-3) and believe it's the latest print that came out.

I don't know what to do and how to decide and i am hoping to get some input from you guys. katrin and lordofthelings timed out in their team games.
now what makes it very hard for me to decide about it because i like both players very much (just as everyone else on the team). now we do have a non tollerance policey for time outs in team games. lordofthelings timed out in 4 games this time and once in the past in two games. i'm not upset with him because of his positive team score of 19 points. he didn't come back online yet, neither contacted me yet. i'll decide when he returned.
the issue i can't deal with alone is katrin's. she put me and the team in a very unpleasent situation.
everything started with a team match with her against fliszt. i don't know what happend in the past, but fliszt contacted me very upset that i put him together with a match against her. he started to insult her and to talk bad about our team. he even contacted webmaster and his old team captain from back in that time to complain about our team. he then had no success with his path of war and left his old team.
i'm still getting msg's from him like:

Actually the prob may be the Ego between the two. But now the situation is not so worse. Already Katrin told that she is not going to play team games for another 1-2 months. So u pls keep her name in the list. In future u see to it that u r not going to give any of the games of that filszt team. initially u give her 2 games and if she contines to time out even after that we will decide then wht to do. This is only suggestion and the decision ball vil be always in ur court.

First I would like to say that Fliszt´s opinion of course should have no influence on whether Katrin should stay on the team or not. In fact I think it is rude of him to write the things he does. Apparently he is a very impatient person. Everybody has the right to use up their days on postponements and to use all their time on each move. Seconly I don´t think there is any excuse for timeing out teamgames. Use the teams policy on this issue IMO. All this is just my humble opinion.

Well, all I can say is that we do have a policy on timeouts. And as I already stated I think we should follow this. If exceptions is made now, what then if the problem appear again on some other player? A rule is a rule IMO, and should be followed. About time taken between moves: Yes it can be frustrating if your opponent uses all his time, but on the other hand: He/she has the right to do so. The time is 3 days per move, don´t forget that.

Yes, we need a rule in place but exercise with prudence, but in this case it has got out of hand, kai_sim is being hit from both sides and can not make a decision. Webmaster is hearing about it, you can take it there are unsavoury messages passing between Karin and Fliszt, other than my first solution if the team doesn’t have the stomach for it then she should forfeit any games which are unwinable and send Karin on a long vacation

She said she wont play for a mount ...she should have in our team until a second fault.All i can say is that.1-i am not so close to the team i dont know exactly the situation 2-but i know that she deserves more respect...i know that time outsare not respectable to the team but we can excuse.
To kai-sim:
i really thank u all your efforts for the team for your replacement.now i want 1 more thing from u...can we now "dont play" with the team players list.no 1 go no 1 come until my return.

i never wanted to remove you, but i wanted the team to decide. most team mates decided for you with a certain break.
if you still like, you can stay with us. I would be happy if you do.
on the other side, i'll reserve the right to remove you from the team if we'll hear similar complaints about stalling games or bringing private problems onto the team (you specificaly asked me for the match against fliszt).
regarding lordofthelings:
he still hasn't been seen on GK and i hope that nothing serious happend to him. Maybe katrin knows (both from poland)???

is supposed to stay as is (filled up on the ratings we needed), except i'll get that GM onto the team. he still hasn't decided for GK or not (he does like it here...).

it takes much more time than i thought in the beginning... everything was still fine, but now i had to switch jobs (too much up north...) and the new one is even better than the old one...
i would like to stay on the team, but please release me from the captains job...
i would keep it until summer, but there is an awesome penthouse, a new job and other stuff that will take much more time than expected...
i'lll be able to come here for like every 2nd or 3rd day so i don't time out but will not be able to set up team matches or anything else...
if you still want me after the 'vacation' for a month or two, thx a lot, if you think you don't have enough games, sorry, take it over...
again:
sorry about the almost 4 moths vacation, but it was the best time in my life.
if not, take it over and i won't feel bad (after i'll be good again...)

(unfortunately most of the players are in the 1800 ratings range :(, which used to be our strongest range)
from tomorrow on, these are the only players i'll not give any team matches until they ask me. you'll not be able to set your team games counter to zero. please set it down to two. would be great if you all could contact mike as well, to have this into GK implemented.
for all others, from tomorrow on, i'll give you your team matches, as it showes you in your preferences (+1). thank you again for updating your info and understanding.

anyways, i always think, that chess is also a game of pations and speed timing.
so, sometimes we are having a big challenge for our patiens, and it's good that way. i learned to keep quiet and wait since i'm 6. if you have an advantage in those games, even better: sitt back and relax... and don't foget, the other one is boiling in his own juices. maybe even hoping, that you'll give up or even worse: time out
you all are doing a good job and no one on the team needs a strategie like that, because we all know how to play!

when I posted my information (april, 7th), I was right...I played oldest game at that moment (started september, 5th, board #1086854 against optimist from Dutchables )... meanwhile optimist resigned this game (someone would remember my posting several months ago about double draw offer from optimist in this match<; one game was draw, but I won this one) ... and now, you're right kai_sim , oldest game is now Team match (started 08-Sep-03, 3 days per move) tkdman vs. clems

regarding iamian, he emailed me that he had an emergency and is still not back. he has no more ongoing team matches and is on +1 points. It's kinda same thing like with chic_luc. he had no internet access at all for a long time and timed out in all his games. his rating fell down to the ground. when he came back, he got plenty of team matches and look at his rating and points now...
i have to addmit that i'm hoping, that the same thing will happen to iamian ;)

I have decided not to waste time by 4 last games, because I havn't had much time and that games veeeeeeeeeeeeeeery hard to win and they have reguired maaaaaaaaaaany time.
I'm going to quit GK.
