Note:
The most significant thing that
has happened since the last Update
is the change in the way teams are
ranked. Very volatile!! Anyhow,
I am trying to work with this new
system. All I can say to you
guys is take your time. Always
play to win but remember that a Draw
against a higher rated team earns
points for the team. So if you
have a sure Draw and a Win is difficult
to see then offer the Draw. You
can then free yourself for another
team game and the Draw if it is
accepted earns points for the team.
That is if the team is higher rated
than our team. :-]

I've been out of town 2 days and our team ELO has fallen over 40 points! The only way I can see
this happening is if our non-team games are somehow figured into the team ELO. Is this correct
or not? I am just trying to understand the new system.

and click on our elo rating (we are now 86th) you can follow the progression. We lost three games yesterday and dropped from 1308 to 1282. It is crazy!!

your personal games have nothing to do
with the team rating. In fact the team rating
has nothing to do with our individual ratings.
The only thing that affects the team rating
is the other team's rating and how we do in each
and every game against that team. So if we are
playing a team with a higher rating and 1 single game
ends it changes our team rating. If we have 8 boards
in a specific match our team rating will change 8 times
before that 1 match is over.
I am therefore making sure we play teams equal to
or preferably higher rated than us. That way our team
stands to gain more points than we can lose. If our
opposing team is higher rated a Draw will give the team
+ points.
It is a very volatile system but I am trying to work with
it. Hopefully, as we finish games against lower rated teams
and the bulk of our matches are against higher rated
we will see a positive change. I say hopefully.
Just take your time with the games and go for a Win.
Now it makes more sense to play less games but
against higher rated teams. Quality over Quantity.
In these matches you still will be paired against
an equally rated opponent but the team's rating
now comes into the mix.

To maybe clarify how this "new" system works.
I set up a match with a team that has a much
higher rating.
Say you [Vandy] are matched against a player
whose individual rating is 200 points lower than
yours. Then you Draw against that person.
Your individual rating will drop as expected but
the team will gain points because the other
team's rating is higher than ours.
Now is it clear? ;-]

We are in 95th place now, but we are just 169 points away from 10th place which is our goal! We were just reaching there when they changed the system and I see no reason for us not to climb again. We will reach 10th place someday we just have to give it more time now!

I have been challenging teams with a higher rated than ours
and for every Win or Draw we gain more points than
we stand to lose if we Lose the game.
Kumli your idea is a good one but the other team's
captain will not allow us to play their lower rated players. :-]
There are plenty of teams that are equally rated or better still
higher rated that we can challenge or who challenge us.
There is not a shortage.
What I was suggesting is that now we do to need to play
lots of games. We can play less games and we can spend more
time with those games in the hopes of increasing our # wins.
Also, if we Draw against a player from a higher rated team
we will also gain points. So if you have a sure Draw and a
possible Win it may be wise to offer the Draw if a way to Win is
not so clear.
We are still here and hopefully we will turn around again.
Driver who is no longer on the team has been losing his games.
Hopefully now his games are finished and that will be that.
So, yes I am optimistic but a little discouraged also
by the happenings of the past week or so.

Perhaps I can help you better understand the new, nonsensical team Elo rating system, Chuck. I am using your team thread, not as an intruder, but in an effort to help your excellent teammates also better comprehend the system. In essence, at best, it is a total crapshoot and here is why. The system not only uses the two teams' Elo's in the new rating calculation after each game, it uses the HIGHER of the two teams' ratings at the beginning of each team game and at the end of each team game. So, for example, if your player started a game against another player and your team was rated 1200 at the beginning of the game and the other player's team was rated 1300 you would think that would be a favorable situation for your team, wouldn't you? But, what if by the time the game ended, maybe a month later, your team was then rated 1400 but the opposing player's team was then rated 1200, the system would use your higher rating of 1400 and the opposing team's 1300, now not a favorable match for your team at all. So, trying to handpick team matches based on team Elo's is going to be pretty much a waste of time and effort. As you said earlier, with the team Elo's so volatile there is just no way at all to anticipate what the two teams' Elo's will be at the conclusion of a game, as opposed to what they were at the beginning. So, my advice would be to just go ahead and pick your team matches as you did in the past and not worry about the stupid, idiotic team Elo's. They are, in fact, entirely meaningless and I fully expect that in time so many team captains will get disgusted with them that Mike will be forced to change the team ranking system again to something else.

right about this but there is 1 good thing
about this new, stupid & idiotic system.
That is we do not have to play a big bunch
of games to compete. Makes no difference
anymore how many wins you get, what makes
the difference is the team rating. Your team rating
can go up with just a few wins at a time. No need
to be playing 260 team games as we were doing.
Yes, I do hope they come to some reasonable
formula but until then all we can do is cope
with what we have.

team rating is climbing so we are climbing. This
new system, although not a good one, is all we
have to work with. I am trying to work with it.
Too bad it seems to be taking it's toll on some of
our people. Not only our people but teams and people
throughout GK are abandoning teams and leaving team play.
All I can say is those are personal decisions and I wish them all
luck.
For us we will continue to try to play and compete. I have
asked some of our people to lower their game maximums if they
wanted to. Now there is less need for large quantities of games
but ever Win and Draw counts more than they did before because
of the volatility of this new system.

Today we are in #22 by the
new system. We will continue
to work with it. We have been
steadily moving up over the past
few days. It is not a good system
but this is what we are left to
work with. The idea is Winning
games and for me to utilize some
imagination when getting matches.
Let's see how we do. The worst part
of this new system is the effect it
is having on some of the membership.
Today coyotefan announced he was
leaving GK. I have also received
notes from other players and team
captains that are either quitting
team play, giving up their teams or
both. Hopefully coyotefan will
reconsider but if he does not I
fully understand why. For us, we
continue to play and move into
position that truly reflects our
chess strength. The top 10 has
always been my goal and it still is
but itis more difficult now and
once there it is difficult to
remain but let's give it a try.

to both Vandy and Buddie! The system is out of our control. We just have to do the best we can. I apologize for the slowness of my results but i make moves usually every other day. In 2 games i have rushed somewhat and now i have to play to not lose:( . The match-ups that chuck makes are excellent. Whether i win or lose, all my games press me to the limit and i am learning with every game. Now if the lessons would just stick:). Good luck to all here and most importantly, have fun!!
