congrats chees for your great achievement (how is that chesspuzzle doing? you promised to do it! and i'll beat you in this game, lets see how unorthodox you can play ;p)

...maybe i should start doing our forum bilingual again, as we had it for a short time in the past...
to everyone who remembers these guys from the old team: koogas and tgtp will (re-)join in the future (when they are back) our team, not the lords team where most of us where before.
what else can i say on a quiet day like this...?
usual stuff, challenges are hard to do with such a few (3) players that show themselfs as available. i'm doing my best and most likely it will be by next week. until then i'll hopefully have assigned a few 1600-1899 players so we will not show that gap anymore.

i have many enemies on this website who feel insulted because i speak loud out what i think, because i stand up for my team and friends, because sometimes my english isn't the best and misunderstandable, because peeps sometimes look for the worst and assume it's the best in you.
no one ever dare to give a deletion vote for my team page and i've had some "hard stuff" going on long time ago.
but in times like this, you never know...
strange whats happening to the forums
regarding website i'm not sure right now. sharpnova got banned for offending mike in the forums, but he would still take care of the website. unfortunately he doesn't have much time right now and it's a big project.
maybe we have some one else on the team who would like to take care of that now?

Sorry, guys, I'm of course nothing to do with 64 Squares, but I wanted to step in for a second. chees, the incident on the Pawn Stars team forum was quite specific... the Pawn Stars have a running joke with a few other teams that these other teams are their "Eternal Rivals", and they have a great time slinging wonderfully ridiculous insults back and forth and heckling each others' games. It appears one or two Eternal Rival team members got a bit overexcited - quite possibly some of the younger members - and made a deletion vote on the team forum. I think some quiet words have been had, and their team leaders put them back on track.
Just putting things in their proper context!

I'm 38 years old, live in Vienna (Austria) and play chess - after a break for a long time, where girls are much more important - since my youth. A few years ago, I found my old chess-notices and began to remember, that chess is a fantastic game. one of our team mates krunterinsky started offering draws in all his games. currently i don't know yet whats going on, he hasn't informed me yet. i just hope that everything is ok with him and i'm thankfull that he didn't resign his games.

I tried to mate the Black King according to the riddle's specification for several hours. Now I think that it's impossible to do this. I believe that it's the White King who gets mated. The text of the puzzle leaves this to reader:
"A game begins with 1.e4 and ends in the fifth move with knight takes rook mate."
It is not said what colour the mating Knight has.

Your right. It doesīnt say specific that it is white that mates. But it is. Otherwise itīs just too easy, and a capacity like Kasparov would probably have found it in no time. I have looked at it more times, but havenīt come up with any solution yet.

i've found until now two solutions where black sets white mate. if I (...worst player ever!) find two i don't think that all the big guys would get headaches.
just to help you guys out, here is my first two solutions:
1.e4 Nf6
2.Nf3 Nxe4 [2.Nh3 Nxe4]
3.Ng5 e6
4.Nxf7 Qf6 [4.Nxf7 Qh4]
5.Nxh8 Qxf2++
which actualy breaks it down into different variations, but stays the same solution
then i found:
1.e4 e5
2.Nc3 Bc5
3.Nb5 Qh4
4.Nxc7+ Kd8
5.Nxa8 Qxf2++
again, different variations are possible, same system
then i thought it's maybe a play with words:
1.e4 Nc6
2.Qf3 Na5
3.e5 Nb3
4.e6 Nxa1
5.Qxf7++
i don't believe that neither is right

Very beautiful I think :-). As regards a solution where white puts black in mate in 5. move with a knight, I have given up for now. Iīm not sure if there is a solution at all.

To my understanding of the riddle the knight should take a rook simultaneously delivering mate. Here one example in 6 moves:
1.e4 f6 2.Nh3 Kf7 3.Nf4 d6 4.Ng6 Be6 5.Qe2 Qe8 6.Nxh8#

at home i'm using netscape. the symbols i put before and after our team name look on netscape like chessboard checkers, very nice and sweet. but with my friends computer, he uses internet explorer it looks more like c..p

oh, nice!
thats from where i have the puzzle from, but i havn't dared to check out some letters to the auther, i didn't know that it was so detailed! yes, thats indeed very funny. i've also found 2 of my solutions in there. so, that means they where then wrong and it has to be black whos getting check mated!
regarding the team name, yes thats what i meant, in my browser it looks like 8 chessboard squares in front and behind the team name. phew! then everything is ok and my friends internet explorer is just messed up?!?!
I would also like to congratulate sualksnh for making it into league B3.

I would like to tell everyone, that i was also following the game sarah was playing. i pretended to watch TV and gave it a few glances: first she was upset that she was losing, then she was happy to be able to force a draw which the other one declined, then she got mad because she was losing it and all of a sudden she was super happy and winning and then this: "WHAT? NOOOO, WHAT HAPPEND???" almost crying. she lost... and she was sooo mad, because she thought she got him on his balls, i thought she's never gonna play again!
i was laughing and then giving her a big hug.

Thanks for the interesting opponents, Kai.
It may well be that my match vs. skipslot will last 3 years. I played 4 games against Methodical Knights and got two lucky draws and two not quite so lucky losses. I'll try to be more careful with this one.
As for the league you'll probably have to wait even longer until someone happens to enter chamber B1.

hehe, i know, and i should have been in A3, but i unfortunately timed out in a match while being up north for about 5 months. that was -2 points, i'm missing .5 points to enter A3, oh well, but nothing to complain about :)
i didn't know that about the past history, but after so many draws and losses, it should now be time for two wins, no? ;)

Sorry to intrude but I couldn't resist ;) The loses were against bigt2555 and the draws were against myongchong and I can guarantee klaus will never have to wait on me to move. I log on at least twice daily and never have a game where its my turn to move when I leave.

well be on vacation for about a week. we'll fly last minute. so i can't tell yet when we will be back. it will not be as long as last time, i promise!
(for everyone who wasn't on the previous team: we planned to go for 2 weeks on vacation and loved it so much, that we stayed almost 5 months).
we'll be leaving this weekend and should be back the weekend after.
i was trying to set up as many team matches as i can, so everyone will appear to be maxed out. the only player that now appears to be waiting for another match is dialos, sarah and myself. i'll try to put us all into the same matchup or so. and then next week we hopefully won them all

he used to be on team Jogho and left the team with a 14 points record out of 33 games. currently with 1723 rating points he's in the perfect rating range to fill up our 1600-1900 gap.
inukshuk actualy made another point, later on while i was allready sleeping. well done girl!
to everyone else, we now are number 13 on the teams table and on your best way back into the top ten. our team rating is currently 1414 points which is fun and shows that we are highly competitive and other team better be carful.
how about we try to be the first team with a 1800+ rating? i know we can do it!

I like to get into more tense attacking positions and weird tactical situations and could use some opening advise. Maybe somebody has experience with a unorthodox or gambit variation that gives that highly complex and double edged positions I am looking for. I tried the goring gambit for instance. In particular with black against 1.d4 there must be something different then the Benko since this line is analysed to a white win.

there are many different gambits i'm currently using. most i love is halloween gambit, then there is budapest, alapin, smith-morra, central gambit, evans... (how much time you have?)
it allways depends on if the oponent let's you play it or not!

dont think that Benko is out. I have played it with success, mostly in OTB games. A good surprise weapon against 1.d4 is also the Budapester gambit, IMO: 1.d4,Nf6 2.c4,e5 and after 3. dxe either 3.-,Ne4 or 3.-Ng4. Not that I have tried it. Itīs not my kind of play. But I have analyzed it together with a friend and itīs quite poisend for white, if he donīt know what to respond.

When you don't like the Benko you don't need to look at other gambits versus 1.d4, you'll find nothing better.
If seeking weirdness is your priority and you don't mind being 1 or 2 pawns up sometimes, Noteboom's defence might be interesting:
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 dxc4
It has a dubious reputation but to my knowledge a refutation has not yet been found.
Some players will offer the gambit:
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c4 4.e4 dxe4 5.Nxe4 Bb4+ 6.Bd2! Qxd4 7.Bxb4
This is still considered unclear and dangerous for both sides. Black is usually two pawns up.
Many player will back away:
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c6 4.e3
In this case 4...f5 should be played. Most of those who play 4.e3 will not like it and it's a good line of the Stonewall, too.
Some very cautious players will exchange on d5:
1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c6 4.cxd5 exd5 5.Bf4
This is no fun and there's nothing you can do about it. Play 5...Bd6 and offer a draw at move 10 or so. This sort of player will usually accept it.
Other option for White are Catalan gambits (with g3) and protection of the pawn by the Queen (Qb3 or Qc2). In both cases a complicated struggle is likely to occur.
