Loose Ends

Message:
Looks like Greg (billiethewondergoat) and Nick (daleman) have started in on the new forum with a vengeance. Here's my semi-irregular plug for Super Friends: The Web Site at sfchess.blogspot.com/. Please note that I've posted an update for Week #7. Our team statistics are continuing to look relatively healthy.

Hey Lethal, welcome to the team's GameKnot forum. Daleman, puppy_king, and billiethewondergoat are rulers here (though others occassionally chime in). A little bit scary but mostly entertaining if you're willing to suspend seriousness. Why don't you guys each post a quick introduction here in case others visit and wonder what's going on?

Here's mine: I'm 30, live in my sister's basement, drive schoolbus by day, play chess mostly by night. I'm also a freelance writer, but the driving is the steady income source at this point.

Hi dodger and everyone else...
I am a 27 year old married w/kids man. The kids are 3 and a half year old twins, thats why billythethundergoat really doesn't scare me. I am a pastor, play soccer, chess, golf (poorly), and basketball. I am 6'3 in case you need to know that. I am not really home alone, nor am I marv, I am Chris and was once told by two goofy kids that I sort of looked like the guy from home alone, the tall goofy one who isn't so smart, however I've also been told I look like Ben Affleck and Tom Hanks. So who knows? What do you think Nick and Eric?

More information

Message:
Sorry, I thought you said Tom Cruise. Guess I need to give these things a closer read.

Hey Greg, I've found some additional information that might be helpful.
First off, it looks like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Montgomery are fighting over the spot for STD capital of the U.S. (1999 figures reported in American Medical News), and Georgia leads the nation in syphillis cases (the primary std used for identification of problem areas). Michigan is second and Maryland is third (CDC 2002 National STD Survey). I did find references to Baltimore as the STD Capital for the U.S., but I found similar references to Hartford, CT. Interestingly enough, 595 counties in the U.S. (19 percent) account for more than 99 percent of all syphillis cases. One of those counties (Idaho's Canyon County) is where I live, along with jasquet, daleman, home_alone_marv, and gogetem.

Regarding heroin use, the DEA named Baltimore the heroin capital of the U.S. in 2000, citing more than 1 in 10 residents as users. But Baltimore later lost that distinction to Chicago, and New York is widely considered the current title holder with more than 200,000 opiate users in August 2003 (publicbroadcasting.net/wnyc/news.newsmain?action=article&ARTICLE_ID=529647).

Regarding robbery, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has long held that his county is the bank robbery and murder capital of the U.S. The FBI seems to agree as do William J. Rehder and Gordon Dillow in their recently released tome "Where the Money Is: True Tales from the Bank Robbery Capital of the World." Granted, you were talking about all instances of theft. So I zipped over to the FBI's preliminary report on robberies by geographic location for 2003 (www.fbi.gov/ucr/2003/03prelimucr.pdf). You'll see that hot spots (red dots) show up twice in California (L.A. and San Diego), twice in Illinois (Chicago), and once each in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Washington, and New Jersey. Maryland has no red or orange dots. Maryland does have two green dots, which represent the greatest rate possible for decline in robbery statistics. All that to say, Baltimore may have once been the robbery capital of the world, but I'm pretty sure it's lost that distinction.

Okay, so by now you're probably thinking, "Eric, you totally missed the point." But I enjoy research, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to engage in debate.

As for this whole city argument, it reminds me of ancient Greece. You know, with the whole city rivalry thing.... sorry, I am studying greek myths right now. Anyway, I think everyplace isspecial in their own way. Baltimore has its Heroin, Millwaukee has their republicans, and Washington has their dirty Hippies.

Eric, you totally missed the point... ;]

How many times have I said that I hate plays on words? blundergoat is especially dumb... thundergoat makes me cringe but not so much as to feel inner disappointment for you...

anyhoo, Milwaukee is not close at all to the canadian border and not being able to remember that makes me worry about the competence of so called "scientists" who are supposed to have something near intelligence... Also, Miller owns a brewery and that's about it. Milwaukee wasn't founded by beer either as some may think. It was founded as a tradepost...

Finally, puppy_king, Milwaukee is extremely liberal. Republicans [which I hate to call people. Conservatives or Right_Winged or something like that would be better] are a rare occurence. It's the country in Wisconsin where the conservatives are.

Message:
You're right, blundergoat is a particularly dumb play on words. Anyway, blundergoat - thanks for
clearing up my confusion about Miller. Now that you have jarred my memory, I must also concede
that Milwaukee is nowhere near Canada.

A so-called scientist should no better, and know when he's met his match. Lesson learned.

You're inner disappointment brings me outer disappointment, or something.

Evil scientist?

Message:
Have you ever thought of being an evil scientist? That used to be one of my dreams. I pictured myself as the Jekyll/Hyde type with a twist. I would be the virtuous sidekick by day, evil scientist by night. Sorry to say, it didn't work out. For one, I hated science. And two, I couldn't find a decent hero to sidekick. Decided to be a lawyer. That didn't happen either, but I'll save the story for another time.

threatening, but 'lethal mutant' is biology jargon for something that dies in early development. I
thought that was an apt description of my OTB games, and the reason I am at GameKnot is to
improve that aspect of my play.
