Subject: The Dangerous Toy's Fun House

Message:
January 2005

Welcome everybody! I hope we all had a safe and Happy New Year! But now, it's time to get back to work and play some Chess. Dangerous Toys will be going through some changes. I hope everybody will be patient with me. In the beginning I had to get whatever matches I could, sometimes outclassing my players. Now, Our Team has grown and we can be a little bit more "picky" on what match we play. Except on rare occassions, expect that your future opponents will be +/- 50 points within your rating.

Here is Our Team and our individual rankings within the Team as they were at the end of 2004:

Now comes the hard part of this Forum. In pointing out various members for various things, I run the risk of forgetting someone. That is something that I do not want to do but, if I dont take the risk then there are so many Team members that will go un-recognized... and that is worse! So, here goes...

Special Thanks go to:
cedsed for being this teams first member, even before the team was started!
andrew0101 for doing "behind-the-scenes" activities for the team.
slavia for taking a special interest in Our Teams progress.
df3658 and kleine_schlampe for joining Our Team despite the language barrier.
kleine_schlampe for having the most interesting name here. Can anyone guess??
mercy, lallyc, and kleine_schlampe for being Our Teams female players. I take a special interest in this one as I am a firm supporter in Womens Chess. I think Women can play Chess just as well as men!
firebrandx, blueknights, whiteandblack, and triton for despite not having much time have agreed to play for Our Great Team.
cavallaro for finally joining Our Team despite numerous invitations from others.
madmsurf for being into Chess analysis as much as I am.
AND FINALLY....
rubar10 who takes a lickin but keeps on tickin!! Actually, I suspect that rubar10 will be climbing up the rankings within the next few months.

There it is! If I have forgotten anyone, please direct hatemail to roxanol Just kidding! I hope I have not left anyone out. Everyone here is doing a great job. Keep up the good work.

**************************************************************

I would like to finally say that our team is still looking for two types of players:
1) Rating ranges of 900-1400's and 1800-2100's.
2) Any player that can play many games.
If anybody knows anybody that may be interested in joining a team, please have them message me OR tell me their user name.

Have a Happy 2005!!
Michael

Q+pawn vs. Q

Message:
I tried to spend some time analyzing the ending, but I realized that I would spend soo much time, energy and will and not being sure that I would follow the correct path. So I decided to follow my instinct (or common sense, whatever you want to call it...), and I go for a WIN. The black king's proximity to the pawn is an extra help for a slow but steady advance of the pawn, considering also the distance of the white king. Marco

When all is lost...

Message:
... go for the draw. Span was in a hopelessly lost position so, what did he do? He looked for a draw and found one... stalemate!! His 40 ...Ne3 could have been ignored but, it wasn't and the result was a half point instead of a big fat doughnut!!

board #2570986

When in a hopeless position, try looking for a defensive draw before resigning. There are a few ways you can draw...
1) 3 fold repetition
2) Stalemate
3) 50 move rule
4) Setting up a fortress

Any questions, please ask here.

50 move rule

Message:
yes, any time during the game. (as a curiosity, when I began, I thought that the 3 fold repetition applied any time my opponent had only a king and made the same 3 moves after one another. I did so in my first ever tournament (under 1200) and managed to stalemate being up 2 rooks, a bishop and some pawns.) Now there is one exception to this rule and concerns three fold repetition after you have been checked and can't move out of the check. There has been some discussion going on (roxanol will have to find the link because he found it for me before) in the forums that after such a check, the checking player should be entitle his opponent to move and should the checking player wish to move himself/herself also and the checked player should wish to then return to the position in which s/he was checked and they should do so three times, the game should be declared a draw (I believe I was the one suggesting this alternative), then that would also count. But the rule has not been officially supported just yet. I guess we will have to wait this one out. (I could translate it to German, but the German members will have to ask, after they read this and if they are interested in the nuances of this message)

(do understand that the post was meant toung and cheek)

My Latest Team Game

Message:
I let Michael know that I was in danger of tarnishing my team record. Well, one of the sketchy games just ended. I am very happy to report that I got lucky in this one. I experimented on move nine, maneuvering my queenside rook to the center of the board, presuming I would be safe even if there was trouble, because my adversary was significantly lower rated than I. Unfortunately, on move thirteen, I unintentionally left a pawn en prise. I was incredibly thankful that my opponent missed the killer capture. However, I spent a few tempi trying to fix the problem. I castled on move fifteen, not seeing doubled pawns could be inflicted upon me, which they were. With accurate play, my adversary took advantage of my bad pawn structure and gained a clearly superior position. However, he repeatedly underestimated my remaining possibility for counterattack and finally blundered into checkmate on move thirty-seven. board #2415358 I welcome any comments.

Cheers,

Justin

50 move rule:
If 50 moves are played without a capture being made or a pawn being moved then a player can declare a draw.

This rule is good to remember if you ever end up with a lone king vs. B+N. Although a B+N can mate the King, it is a very difficult mate to do. Sometimes doing it corectly can take up to 40+ moves. Or sometimes there are pawnless endgames that you may need to use this rule. i.e. R vs. N, R+B vs. R In certain endings like these, checkmate is possible but sometimes difficult so, even though checkmate is possible... your opponent is bound to the 50 move rule.

3 Fold repetition:
If the same exact identical position occurs 3 times, a player may calim a draw. It does not have to be 3 succesive times (right after another). Lets look at an off the wall example:
Slavia, you will probably like this opening. We'll name it The Slavic!!
1.Nf3 Nc6
2.Nc3 Nf6
3.Ng1 Nb8
4.Nb1 Ng8
5.Nf3 Nc6
6.Nc3 Nf6
7.Ng1 Nb8
8.Nb1

Now, if black plays anything but 8 ...Ng8 then the game goes on but if black were to play 8 ...Ng8 then white can clain a draw by 3-fold (the starting position has been repeated 3 times. But let us pretend that black did not play 8 ...Ng8

8 ... Nd5
9.Nf3 Nf4
10.Nd4 Nh3
11.Nf5 Ng1
12.Nh6 Nh3
13.Ng8 Nf4
14.Nh6 Nh5
15.Nf5 Nf6
16.Nh4 Ng8
17.Nf3

Again, a 3-fold repetition has occured..... The same exact position has occured 3 times. Keep in mind... the same exact position has to occur.

I hope this helps. Slavia, I tried to look for that post but could not find it.

5. Nc3 a6
6. Be3 b5
{Being an old Sicilian player myself I have always stayed away from ...e5 positions but against 6.Be3 it is very reccomended. I would have played 6 ...e6}

7. a4 bxa4
{What was black thinking? This is a good example to show that openings must
be learned, not just memorized. Blacks only chances in the Sicilian lie on the queenside (usually), this just hands it over to white.}

8. Rxa4
{No need to hurry. The pawn is not going anywhere. 8.Bc4 is stronger BUT, there is nothing BAD about 8.Rxa4}

8 ...Bd7
9. Ndb5
{Good idea! Wrong piece! 9.Nb5 allows black the initiative in the form of an attack against the e pawn 9 ...Bc6! although 9 ...Nc6-e5 looks strong too.}

9 ...Nc6
10. Na3 Nb8
{What is he thinking??? I wonder what he would have played if Justin cedsed would have played the Knight back. Maybe a 3-fold repetition??}

11. Rd4
{I do not see anything terribly wrong with the idea of moving the Rook over to the center but I would have maybe played 11.Rb4 Nc6 12.Rb3}

11 ... Nc6
12. Rd2 g6
13. Nd5 Bg7
{?? 13 ...Nxd5 ed 14.Ne5 is neccesary since the Knight is too powerful sitting there all undisturbed and supporting that b6 square for a Bishop or worse, the offside a3 Knight.}

14. Bd3
{Justin, a good opportunity was 14.Bb6! Qb8 15.Nc7 Kf8 16.Nxa8 Nxe4 17.Re2}

14 ...O-O
15. O-O Ng4
{Not as strong as 15 ...Nxd5 16.ed 17.Nb4! since white can still play 16.Bb6 followed by 17.c3 Nge5 18.Nc4! and whites offside Knight serves a purpose.}

16. c3 Nxe3
17. fxe3
{If one was worried about doubled pawns, one could have played 17.Nxe3 Never be afraid to move the pieces backwards.}

17 ... e6
18. Nf4 Ne5
{Ohhh... pawn structure! A very broad and sometimes confusing subject that
slavia and I will be getting into in a few days. Doubled pawns are not automaticaly bad. Allowing the doubled pawns to happen was not to be
prefered BUT, now that they are here, they are not altogether BAD. They do
provide two open files here and they do control many central squares, namely
d4, d5 and f5. If the e file was open for black, they would be weaker but, the file is closed so, a head on assault by black is not to be feared. The only drawback is that nice little home given to Blacks Knight which should be challenged right away with 19.Nc4! although 19.Qe2 may be a more prudent way to play.}

19. g3 Qb6
20. Ng2 Bc6
{Justin was right, he is taking advantage of those poor little guys. The slightest move (in this case 19.g3) can give the opponent a strong initiative.}

21. Bb1 Qb7
22. Qc2
{22. Qe2 is better, since Bxe4 23. Bxe4 Qxe4 24. Rxd6 and white recaptures his pawn and frees himself from the cramped position.}

22... d5
23. exd5 Bxd5
24. Nh4
{Why not 24.e4 to cut off blacks use of the diagonal?}

24 ... Ng4
25. Qd3 Bf6
26. Qe2 Bxh4
27. Qxg4 Be7
28. h4
{It may have been better to consolidate the position with 28.Qe2 and 29.Be3}

28 ... Bc5
29. Qg5 Be7
{Too late!! Whites queen will make it to h6 so why not just play what black should have played at move 28? Namely 29 ...f5 it limits the attacking potential of Rf1 and Bb1}

30. Qh6 Qc7
31. Kh2 Bxa3
32. bxa3 Qxc3
33.Rdf2 Qxa3
{The black queen was in a good position to help in the defense of the King. I would have played 33.Bc4!}

34. h5 Ra7
35. hxg6 hxg6
{This mistake lets Blacks win slip away into a draw. The corect move was 35 ...f5!!}

36. Bxg6
{Great move!! Unfortunately, it only draws.}
36 ...e5
{The fatal mistake!! 36.f6 followed by the queen manuever Qe7-g7 holds the
position.}

Seriously now, I have never thougth of the same position rule that way and I am sure if it happened in a tournament I would have missed it. One always thinks of it as a three fold repetions in succession. Thanks for that!

Everyone, I no I am not in your team. But Michael is a great friend of mine and said I could post here. I just looked at his analysis. Learnt a lot! He is an amazing player, and to think he was much better some time ago than he is now... BTW, he has just drawn carlosmart and cairo and now is probably winning another game against cairo, one of the top players on this site!

As for this analysis, I agree with most, except that, even I would have probably gone Rd4 on move 11 rather than Rb4. The rook seems safer there with square d2 available.. if Rb4, the rook on b3 might have got trapped there somehow?

Also, one small question, you say that black could have won with 35....f5 instead of 35....hxg6. Is white completely lost after 35....f5! What about some reckless move like 36.g4?! Also, one more question, instead of 36.....e5?! you say that black could have held on with 36....f6! How would the game continue after that? Is there no way white can continue to maintain initiative? The trouble is that I can't think of a good way for black to swing a rook to the h-file, which if possible, would have been dangerous. Further, if black can hold the position after 36.....f6, ti means he will win? Or just draw? Because white doesn't even have a perpetual.. so if the attack loses still, blacks a-pawn could start rolling any moment...

Okay enough questions for now.. Forgive any obvious mistake, I have given only a quick look.

I may think about joining your team after a few weeks :-). Right now busy cutting down on games first for some reasons.

Hey Joe,
you played a couple of dozen of games for the team and you are actually playing other twenty or so. Nobody is expecting you to win them all. All my respect for your effort. And, by the way, you gave a nice mate to altluci!

cedseds game

Message:
Atish (invincible1),
Move 11 seems to be a critical point in the game. Do you remember our discussion about initiative and how it is an advantage that can not only be hard to take advantage of but, sometimes difficult to even realize you have it? And why? Because of its nature. It is invisible, naked to our eyes. It is an dynamic advantage, something that is here one moment and gone the next. Another one of those kinds of advantages is... development. Not nearly as invisible as initiative but, even more difficult to take advantage of. White here has initiative and a lead in developement. There are two things I would like to do in this position, increase my initiative and also to take advantage of blacks lack of development. The problem with 11.Rd4? Well, if you talk about safety and such then yes, d4 seems best in this position but, what does it threaten? When black sees Rd4, what does it make him do? Nothing. The game goes...

11.Rd4 Nc6 12.Rd2 g6 13.Nd5 Bg7 14.Bd3 0-0 and black has developed without hinderence, without any sort of pressure. Not only has black solved his development problem but, it is he who seems like he might have the initiative with 15 ...Ng4 (I think Ng4 would better have been played at move 12!).

I like two moves in this position. Each of which has its own purpose...

11.Bb5 would be my choice in trying to stay ahead in development until a way to take advantage of blacks lack of it is found. However, since black will most likely overcome his development problem without suffering too much of a loss in some other positional aspect, I decided it may be best to continue to apply pressure with 11.Rb4

Do not get me wrong, I do not think 11.Rd4 is a BAD move. It does not lose. I just think it gives black an easier game.

The next question has to do with the situation at move 35.

Yes, I believe white is really lost after 35 ...f5! hxg6 is an important move for black since white has his Q and K on that file. One would like to place a Rook on h7. There are just two problems:

1) Blacks f pawn is in the way on f7 and...
2) White has that pesky Bishop bearing down on g6 and h7

Hmmm... how can we solve these two problems? I know!! how about 35 ...f5! It clears a way for us to swing our Rook (which is doing nothing) over to where all the action is and it blocks that annoying white Bishop on b1!! Oh, how nice... it also blocks those doubled Rooks. For one move, I think 35 ...f5 does much. You see, the problem white has in this game is simple: Succeed in the attack or lose. For black, it is: Survive the attack and win! If you remove all the pieces, black has a positionally won endgame. A possible line is...

35 ...f5 36.e4 hg 37.Kg2 Rh7! 38.Qg5 Bb3 39.Rh1 Kg7 40.Rxh7 Kxh7 41.g4 fg and how is white to prevent black from exchanging down into a pawn endgame?

The last question deals with the position at black's 36th where the catastrophic ...e5?, allowing mate on the move, was played. I think 36 ...f5 or 36 ...f6 can be played. Not too sure which one is better? There are +'s and -'s about both. But, they both prevent white from outright winning. How would it continue? I dont think it can.

Atish, you know me. Most people might think that I love defending difficult positions just as much as I love attacking. It is true, I really like to tackle those tough defensive moves. I do like to play defensive Chess but, that is only when the position calls for it. You know that in truth, I like nothing more then the attack!! And, I've got to say, I can't think of a way to continue the attack here against black (after 36 ...f6). If you can find a way, please share it with us. There may be a way but, I do not see it. The best I can think of is 37.e4 Bc4 and now what?

Black lost his chance to win at move 35. After 36 ...f6, he could only draw.

************************************************

Hi guys, as you can see... I am back. I am sorry if I had any of you worried. I had way too many games! GameKnot was becoming more of a stress in my life rather then something fun to do. I had to resign many of my games in order to prevent that. I offered draws to some players but most refused the draw offers. After that, I had to take a little break to re-assess the situation so I can be sure not to have this problem again. Never fear, you guys are important to me. I would never just abandon our team.

I would like to thank everyone for the support I have recieved. I would also like to thank many other team captains for their support. A special thank you goes to astinkyfart and xena two good friends of our team.

Thank You,
Michael (roxanol)

P.S. inarion, I am going to take a look at your game with 05889 "how not to play against the sicilian" I will post about it in the next forum since this one is almost full.

opening

Message:
I have been using a sicillian/benoni opening as black against d4 openings of late with some success...gives a 3-2 pawn majority on the queen side which is explotable. Any comments? Here is the opening:
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 c5 4. d5 exd5 5. cxd5 d6
6. Nc3 Be7 7. e4 O-O
