Life on a chessboard.

Message:
Having noticed a distinct lack of writing in this thread I decided maybe it was time to actually write something here. Being well past midnight I was staring at the computer screen contemplating my games and the pieces on the board. Just pieces on a board - but something my brother often tells me had me looking at them with more love. These pieces, they are your little soldiers and you are their general and their god. Where you point they go.
My brother always tells me I should look upon chess like a war between two armies, where no one piece can win the war by itself. But no matter how hard you try not to have a distinct way of playing that your opponant can pick up on, after a while you grow to relate to certain pieces more than to others.
Some of us like the ladies ;)
While others do pretty much anything to keep our knights in line.

So in the tradition of trying to start an actuall conversation in this thread I'll ask you a question and hopefully you will answer it as well as introducing yourself.

What piece on the board do you see yourself as? What piece do you relate to and why?

I am King, hear me roar!

Message:
Hey team,

I'm glad Chessjoke brought us all back together, I must admit I haven't been playing as much turn based chess but joining the team again has sparked backup my interest.

williamblake, tis a good question. I see myself as the king. Being the King I love and honor my Queen but my undying loyalty is to that of the Crown and all that it stands for. I fight for my Kingdom and use any instrument that will strike down mine enemies, I only favor victory.

Long Live the Chess Champs!

days to move

Message:
Hi everyone:

Glad to be playing team chess again. I look forward to the challenge.

I do have a question though. Is there no standard time to move? I'm teamed against an opponent now who wants 7 days to move. I really don't like to drag games out that long.

Any thoughts?

the Plan

Message:
The thought behind positional play is called the plan. Not to be confused with "the idea" which gives life to a combination.
The differencies between the combination player and the positional player becomes apparent when we consider that:
the combination player thinks forward: he starts from the given position and tries the forceful moves in his mind; the position-player thinks backward: he concieves a position to be arrived at and works toward that position of which he is more conscious than the one on the board.
He sees successive stages in the position aimed at and he visualises the stage in reverse order.
Is short in the concieving of plans the intended position is the root of my thinking.
However.. this does not exclude the possibility of combining combinatory and positional skills... in fact when these differencies are transformed into a harmony within the player, (i.e the player can find combinations within his plan) then he can truly call himself a chess-master.

Good luck with your playing.

/Rikard

falling down

Message:
I am falling down. I am making the silliest mistakes. Do not give me more games until I feel better, and feel free to drop me if you need to. I would understand, for as of today, it may be good for the team. This is a phase, though. But it has been going on for 3 weeks. Sorry

great book

Message:
here is a couple of books i think are good. CHESS OPENING TRAPS AND ZAPS BY BRUCE PANDOLFINI i think it is a very good opening book. CHESS 5334 PROBLEMS, COMBINATIONS, AND GAMES, INTRODUCTION BY BRUCE PANDOLFINI, a great book for a beginer player. this last book is mostly story's of chess with a little beginer work in it, THE CHESS COMPANION, BY IRVING CHERNEV, ALSO BOBBY FICHER HAD A WORK BOOK FOR CHESS OUT, WITCH I THINK IS GOOD FOR ANY LEVAL OF PLAYER I RUN THROUGH IT BUT IT ALWAYS PICKS MY GAME UP A LITTLE.

Sweden VS Norway

Message:
Swedish Linus Eriksson is playing Norwegian player Narvik(Andreas Larsen).
Linus won the first game when he played as black but in this game he is playing as White.

gameknot.com/chess.pl?bd=2899311

1. e4 d5
2. exd5 Nf6
3. d4 Nxd5
4. c4 Nb4
5. Qa4+ Nb8-c6
6. d5 b5
7. cxb5

This is a textbook misstake that players often make; their attacks may seem dangerous but if responded to correctly it isn't.

What is blacks next natural move and why does White have to be careful?

Please feel free to analyze this game and comment upon it. What moves should White have done instead? ...

sw vs. nw

Message:
This position is as you said a textbook example with a lot of opening-book play, and as far as I'm concerned I would play it as more favorable for black.
With the move 7....Nd4 (even queen captures on d5 is possible here) white can continue his attack by playing 8. Na3 with black responding 8 ... e5.
Note here that the tempting move of queen captures knight is impossible to play due to :8... Nc2+ 9. Kd1 Nxb4 and the white queen is lost.

I can see now that several moves have been made in the game:
7. ...............Nd4
8. Na3 e5
9. dxe6 e.p. Bxe6
10. Be3

this is of course immaculately played, still I think this is a more favorable position for black.
a possible move here could be 10....Qh4 but c5 is also playable. The more careful approach of Qf6 is in my opinion not better here in fact it gives white a small advantage, with plenty of attacking possibilities.
Feel free to disagree with me any feedback on my comments are welcome.

Discussing your own games.

Message:
I see nothing wrong in discussing your own games with other team-members, however I would suggest that you finnish said game first since it otherwise could be viewed as cheating if say other players suggested moves.

Message:
Hello Josh! About Bobby it is a very long story rather consufing for me. You can see in chess websites. About Lasker the best I have read is from Jeremy Silman, he has commented several games of him in his book about The great champions I and II (Silman commented about all the masters since 1800 century till now, very interesting commentaries and of course, very nice games!)
