Subject: GameKnot Kings 2
Message: is everyone enjoying the mini-tourneys? we've got a few solid performances being turned in. daveratz is putting in a blinder, our team captain (brief round of applause) also giving all he's got and a few dark horses playing quietly in the background...
does anyone have a preferred opening position for another mini-tournament? what about our newer members, any suggestions?

2/06/2005 22:56:10 [ report this post ] | new openings
Message: it's not often I share so I hope you all feel special.
I've been dabbling with a 'new' opening lately and I've had some great success with it.
it's a line of the Scotch Gambit. it's good because it's different to the usual auto-pilot type openings you see and it's not widely used.
I just know that 3. d4 takes opponents by surprise as they're expecting 3. Bb5 (Ruy Lopez) or 3. Bc4 (Giuoco Piano) and straight away I've got them in unfamiliar territory:
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 ed
if 3. ... Nxd4 4. Nxd4 ed 5. Qxd4 white has the centre and the easier development
if 3. ... d5 5. Nxe5 Nxe5 (or 4. ... de 5.Bb5 slight advantage white) 5. de de 6. Qxd8+ Kxd8 7. Nc3 slight advantage white
if 3. ... d6 white can exchange on e5 and d8 and have a slight advantage
cont'd
4. Bc4 (I love this, set the pieces up on a chess board and have a look at white's development), now it's either
4. ... Bc5, or,
4. ... Nf6 5. 0-0 Nxe4 (or 5. ... Bc5)
have a look and see what you think. does anyone else have a favourite opening they'd like to share with the team? I got this opening from a book by Raymond Keene and David Levy which I bought off ebay. it has some really good openings and some I find to be a bit ordinairy. nonetheless I just wanted to add that I did not invent these lines. now everyone who reads this owes me an opening, pay up or may Caissa strike you down!

2/07/2005 13:18:58 [ report this post ] | Scotch game
Message: It's not bad but I'm sure I remember reading somewhere something about it being fairly easy for black to equalise, which was why the Ruy Lopez came into being. Could be wrong though, I don't have the book I read it in to hand. I feel you missed out the most likely scenario though:
3. ... exd4
4. Nxd4 and then either Bc5 or Nf6
I would go further but I'm only just starting to explore theory and I'd probably get confused. I think as black I'd probably play Nf6 though. The other option just leads to about twenty thousand pieces attacking and defending the knight, and scares me!
So now I owe you an opening, eh? Not got many since I follow most of the basic lines myself like Ruy Lopez, Scotch or Four Knights. However, you could always take a look at the opening in this crazy tournament I'm playing at the moment. I'm a little concerned because if you look at the results in so far (and there have only been a few so this will change), not only am I the only person to have won with white, but I'm the only person to have failed to win as black!

Message: i really hate them (and most chess books that enumerate them) because i'm unable to memorize them all.
For me, the only way to go is using general principles and understanting the ideias behind each one. But who cares about my opinion, i'm just a rookie.
(The rookie that is going to win chilliman's KID tournament)
For that reason my contribute for chilliman challenge is a book recommendation. A must read. "Ideas Behind the Chess Openings", by Reuben Fine.

2/11/2005 13:33:26 [ report this post ] | Reuben Fine.
Message: I have recently bought a copy of Ideas Behind the Chess Openings and am working my way through it in a rather zigzag fashion. It's not too bad, although I feel sometimes, to really acheive what the title says, he should explain things just a little bit better. There have been a few occasions now when he's simply said it is a good idea to put a knight or bishop on such and such a square but without really saying why. On one line of the Sicilian, for example, he has Bd7 or b7(better) but then promptly follows the d7 line in all his examples and never says why Bb7 is better. I'm assuming it's to do with control of the a8-h1 diagonal but then you seem to lose something out towards the edge of the board on your queenside.
Bah, I don't know, don't know anything at all. I suppose the way I look at the book is that it's not a bad starting point for someone like me who has only just begun to look into theory. It's given me a general feel for what I've looked at so far and given me ideas for what parts of the game I want to look into in more depth.

(in reply to) Private message from chilliman:
Hello, hyperknightz!
that's a fair comment Austin but he's got to understand that as a captain, if he gives his commitment on something he must keep his word. do you work or are you a student? if you work you'll know what I mean. if your boss gives you a commitment on something and then goes back on his word you feel deflated and let down and all the hard work you've put in seems to go unappreciated. that is how I feel! I've got no chance to beat a player so highly rated, he should have declined the challenge or at least given me the option - especially since we had discussed it earlier. I have won a lot of points for the team, why would he take delight in seeing me get beaten? very immature! I have never taken delight in any of my team-mates losses and neither should he, esp as captain. I have always encouraged an supported all my team-mates. I have given Nick and his sister advice on openings etc but it doesn't seem to matter to him. he is the one who has let the team down, not me, my efforts speak for themselves.

Hello, hyperknightz!
Nick has p*ssed me off for the last time. He's a nice enough young dude but some of his comments have rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe I'm too thin skinned but I didn't appreciate his comments about me losing games - and there were other comments too. Read the forum for more information.
I actively participated in the team and tried to encourage a bit of team spirit. I played a lot of games and always did my best and this is how he shows his gratitude.

Thanks for your comments. If you want to play any games in the future I will be more than happy to play you.
