2/07/2005 04:44:08 [ report this post ] | odd opening
Message: I have been using a sicillian/benoni opening as black against d4 openings of late with some success...gives a 3-2 pawn majority on the queen side which is explotable. Any comments? Here is the opening:
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 c5 4. d5 exd5 5. cxd5 d6
6. Nc3 Be7 7. e4 O-O
Seems that 1....Nf6 is pretty important, as is d6 immediately after 5. cxd5...I have experimented without both, and 1...Nf6 gives a better game, and 5....d6 is critical...LOL (lost a game badly when I delayed that move...ouch...was cramped forever! Opponent played 6. d6 and really put me in a spot...cost me a piece which eventually cost me the game. However, with the 2 above moves it gives a good game, particularly if they give you the queen side majority which late on in the game becomes quite tiresome for the opponent.
In the games where I omitted 1...Nf6 but included d6, the game was not bad, but presented complications which would have been eliminated with the simple 1....Nf6 move (ie...e4, which makes a following Nf6 uncomfortable, along with other moves). It also implies an Indian defense, which impression is destroyed with the attack on the center c5. Seems to be a perversion of a sicllian, which transposes into a perversion of the benoni...LOL
Any and all comments are welcome....am not real strong on openings (my memory sucks!) so getting my opponents out of book soon as possible is important to me...LOL...this opening seems to do that, and at the same time, gives black a decent attacking position with a strong queen side pawn majority for the endgame.
BTW...the inspiration for this came from Nimzovich. His book, "My System", is great and I recommend it for anyone to improve general play as well as opening theory.

2/09/2005 05:04:12 [ report this post ] | Thanks Cavallaro....
Message: .... here is the analysis.
For anyone who is interested, here is my annotated game with cairo I originally commented on this game and sent him my notes so, there is heavy "you" and "your" pronoun usage in my notes. Just keep in my this was originally written and sent to him and I was just a little too lazy to go back through it and change all the "my's" and "mine" to "white" and change all the "you" and "yours" to "black". Confused yet?? I am.
roxanol - cairo
1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 e6
3. Nc3 Bb4
4. e3
{I have played 1.e4 my whole OTB life. I have always had interest in 1.d4 but because of my inability to find a decent line against the Nimzo and the Dutch... I have stuck with 1.e4 I have never had any faith in 4.e3 (I've previously played 4.a3 or 4.f3). However, I recently discovered something I can work with in this line.}
4 ...O-O
5. Bd3 d5
6. Nf3 c5
7. O-O Nc6
{You surprised me here. I think 7 ...Nc6 is best here but the database that I am using shows that 7 ...dc is mostly played. There goes my preparation!}
8. a3 Bxc3
9. bxc3 b6
{I was still hoping for dxc from you since my preparation centered around a specific pawn structure rather then specific moves. I base most of my planning around Minor pieces and pawn structures.}
10. cxd5 exd5
{Although we are still in known lines here, I had to re-think my strategy since this was not the pawn set-up I was looking for from Blacks position. Funny, how the position of one pawn (black pawn on d5 instead of e6) can change things.}
11. Ne5 Nxe5
12. dxe5 Ng4
13. f4 Qh4
{I have a very modest database so I do not know if 13 ...Qh4 has been played
before? But to me, I think 13 ...f5 would be safer although after 14.ef Nxf6 15.c4 Ba6 16.cd Bxd3 17.Qxd3 Qxd5 18.Qxd5 Nxd5 19.e4 Nc3 20.Re1 Re8 21.e5 both sides can argue for their position. But I think blacks queenside pawns will do better then whites center majority. For this reason, I would not have played 14.ef}
14. h3 Nh6
15. e4
{My original idea here was to combine attack and defense with 15.Qc2 followed by an eventual Ra2. But after 15 ...c4 16.Bxh7 Kh8 17.Ra2 Bxh3 18.gh Qg3 19.Qg2 I felt that your d5 pawn would not be a suitable target, you would still end up with a queenside majority and your Knight would be stronger then my Bishop (in that position). So, I decided I needed to make this position better for my Bishop. Especially since I have the 2 Bishops. I also wanted to open the position more while your Knight was out of position.}
15 ...Bxh3
16. exd5
{This is an important part of my strategy of improving my minor pieces over yours. I believe this pawn configuaration gives me a slight static advantage in the center and the kingside if (IF) I can avoid a serious disadvantage on my kingside. Your Q+B+N look dangerous to white but, I believe they are not working well together. 16.gh would allow you to go for a draw.}
16 ...Bd7
{I think 16 ...Bf5 is better. It would challenge control of the b1-h7 diagonal forcing me to exchange as I think giving up the diagonal (17.Be2) and avoiding the exchange (17.Qf3) both allow 17 ...Ng4. But even 17.Bxf5 allows black's Knight back into the game. More importantly, 16 ...Bf5 would have prevented me from continuing my pawn pushing.}
17. f5
{I do not know if this is the "BEST" move but it is the only logical continuation
of my strategy of gaining central/kingside space and improving the scope of my
Bishops. I had a big concern of wether I would be sticking them out too far. I felt that I would be able to hold them together and that e6 would soon become a real threat.}
17 ...Ng4
{The one down side of 17.f5 is it gives your Queen access to the other side of the board. I was worried about 17 ...c4. When I saw 17 ...Ng4 I was very worried that I had miscalculated.}
18. Bf4 Rae8
{After being forced to play 18.Bf4 I kept expecting 18 ...c4 Since my pawn wall depends on my light squared Bishop I would have to move to c2.}
19. Qe1
{I was not sure if I should continue with my strategy or if I should take a moment to secure the queenside with a4 and Bb5 I decided that 19.a4 would allow you to ruin everything with 19 ...Nxe5! So, I feel my move was almost forced.}
19 ...Qh5
{This is one of the moves I was impressed by. I would expect someone that is
shakin up by my attack would jump at the chance to trade Queens but here, that
would be bad. Someone who has more nerves would want to preserve the Queen and may find it neccesary to retreat the Queen far away, maybe to e7 but for that
I planned 20.d6 followed by 21.f6 and for 19 ...Qd8 I would simply move my Queen to g3 followed by 21.e6! Your 19 ...Qh5 gave me more trouble then any other move could have!}
20. Qg3
{And here is the problem that 19 ...Qh5 gave me. While I would like to protect my pawns that I have worked so hard for (20.Bg3) I did not want your Queen access to c1-h5.}
20 ...c4
{I am not sure if it would have been better but, I think I would have chose 20 ...Bxf5 as my defense. i.e. 21. Bxf5 Qxf5 22.e6 Qxd5 23.ef (23.Qxg4? Rxe6 24.Rad1 Qc6!) 23 ...Qxf7 24.Qxg4}
21. Be4
{OK, this move is sure to draw criticism from you but I just could not let go of that b1-h7 diagonal without a fight!! True, (21.Bxc4) would put my Bishop on another good diagonal bearing down on e6 (my main target for the last few moves), f7 and g8 BUT....
1) My c pawn would become a static weakness.
2) Your Q+B+N would be working together better then they were previously and...
3) 21 ...Bxf5 would allow you to bring another Piece to the defense of your King.}
21 ...Bxf5
22. Bxf5 Qxf5
23. e6
{I have been over protecting this pawn throughout the middlegame. It was time to advance it.}
23 ...Qxd5
24. exf7+
{24.Qxg4 does not fit in with my plan. After 24 ...Rxe6 I felt your extra pawns were equal to my Bishop. I could see no way of getting an advantage. I would even have to deal with a possibly well timed f5 or h5 from you.}
24 ...Rxf7
25. Qxg4 Re4
{I dont agree with this move. I do not know if I just dont see what your plan was or if this was just a swindle. For defense, I would have tried doubling on the f file followed by pushing your queensidemajority.}
26. Rae1 h6
27. Rxe4 Qxe4
28. Qg3 g5
{I was expecting you to try to tie up my pieces with 28 ...Qf5 29.Rf3 Qc5 which I was not sure if I would respond with 30.Re3 or 30.Be3}
29. Bb8 Rxf1+
30. Kxf1 a6
31. Qd6 Qb1+
32. Kf2 Qc2+
33. Kg1 Qxc3
34. Qg6+ Qg7
{This is where I started to play without any specific plan. I knew I had a pawn structure problem and I did not feel comfortable trading Queens. I knew I needed to keep my a pawn. What made me lose my way was the myriad of checking possibilities. Do I check here or do I check here then there? I do remember that I was beginning to regret putting my Bishop on b8 instead of e5. At this point I felt I may have thrown away a win. If this was OTB... I would have offered a draw.}
35. Qe6+ Kh7
36. Be5
{I wanted to play 36.Qxc4 so bad but I felt it was more important to get my
bishop back on a1-h8first}
36 ...Qg6
37. Qxc4 b5
38. Qc7+ Kg8
39. Qc8+ Kf7
40. Qd7+ Kg8
41. Qd5+ Kh7
42. Bc3
{My last few checks had been made with no plan in site. It was only now that I came up with a plan. I almost played 42.Qb7 but felt that it still didn't get me anywhere. I also did not like any idea that involved moving my g pawn so I decided to use my Q+B together as a mating threat. This would atleast force your Q to stay near the King (taking away some of your mobility.}
42 ...Qb6+
43. Kh2 Qg6
44. Kg3
{I did not go for an immediate Qd4(e5) because I was a little worried about a check from h5. I could not decide if this threat was real or if it was nothing to worry about. I decided to be safe.}
44 ...h5
45. Kh2
{Now with h5 taken away from your Queen, I wanted my King to return home to a safer place away from checking distance of your pawns.}
45 ...Kh6
46. Qd4 Qf7
{It was here that I felt you were running out of moves. I wanted to slowly squeeze the dark squares since I had a dark squared Bishop with no opposing Bishop to challenge him. I expected 46 ...h4 which I then wouldhave continued my previous plan but with your king locked away behind his pawns, I felt I could squeeze both my Q+B a little closer.}
47. Qd6+ Kh7
48. Be5 Qg6
{I may have tried 48 ...g4 to give the King some space in case he ends up back that way. But, it can be argued that it gives up control of more dark squares (f4).}
49. Qf8 Qg8
50. Qf6
{From here it was just a point of taking away your pawn moves.}
50 ...a5
51. Kg1 b4
52. axb4 axb4
53. Bd4 b3
54. Bb2 h4
55. Kf2 1-0
Any questions, comments or refutations are fully welcomed.

Message: I have already congratulated you as I was following this game of yours almost move by move, but again, Congratulations on a great victory Michael!!
I CLEARLY see why you both are way way better than me. Every move has so much to it, and I would probably have got every move different from both of you whether I was white or black! And Michael, I really appreciate your courage for not capturing gxh3 against Cairo!! So I have no question to ask there, since you were trying for a win! But this question should probably go to Cairo then, would he have just taken the draw had you played gxh3!? Perhaps back then he wasn't aware of your playing strength as he hasn't played you before right?? And you did not have a very high rating... But on looking, it does appear that black will have to settle for a draw there....
I have a few more questions and doubts, though they may seem very stupid to you. I shall still ask them anyhow, I don't want to miss a chance to learn ;-). Its past 2.30am here so I shall probably post again about this game tomorrow with my doubts..
BTW, to everyone "Hello", I am in the team too now :-). I can post a brief introduction of myself here or through a message to all members. I am not sure what is expected of me?
Michael, congratulations once again! So when do we see your next big win!? I guess you are still trying to break the jinx with chesshub. But you seem to be thrashing all 2000+ and most 2100+ players comfortably! It would be interesting for you to have another showdown with Cairo or some other 2200+ players, or some of the strongest players on this site IMHO such as cairo, duchess, florinserban, harpov, snaga, cyrano and carlosmart......... and then mateintwo is on position 1. Well many more, allkarlos and drdesoto etc.

I am particularly interested in this game since I play 1. d4 most often. My reasons are simple, I hate playing the complexities of the e4 games, specially when you toss in sicilian...for some reason I feel much more comfortable with 1.d4 and 2.c4. One day I would like to play you Michael..maybe try my new pet opening if you open with d4...heh

The other day, Michael and I discussed extensively and agreed that the most important theme of chess for the coming century will be controlling the i9 square. Michael, so finally did you discover where that square is? Also, a 100 years hence, I don't think Knight to QR3 will ever be played.. I feel the first move will surely Tiger to i9 !!

On a different note. cairo was a worthy opponent. I beat him this time, I do not think I will again. I have reviewed some of his games and I can tell you he is a much better player. As for Chesshub.... he is one big thick brick wall that I keep running into!! I have given it considerable thought and I have concluded that chesshub is unbeatable!! His play reminds me of Capablanca. Simple yet strong!
Ummm.. watch out! We have many women on this team and they are ALL exceptional Chess players. My personal favorite? Without a doubt... lallyc !!! There seems to be no end to her winning!! Watch out cedsed you have some competition coming your way. If you dont take care, you may find yourself in the number 2 slot!!

Below is what inarion wrote above...
"I have been using a sicillian/benoni opening as black against d4 openings of late with some success...gives a 3-2 pawn majority on the queen side which is explotable"
I copied this here because it contains something very important! A lot of us sometimes wonder what opening do I play? How do I play after the opening? Each opening has its certain characteristics, we must identify these. What for you may ask?? inarion states this in the next sentence. To try to exploit it. This is how you play Chess openings. You find out what imbalance it has and you play accordingly, you try to exploit it. I will look for some sample openings and I will post them here. Does anyone have any samples? Lets look at
1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bb5 Nd4
4. Nxd4 ed
From blacks point of view, what is there in this position to exploit?
How about after
1. e4 c5
2. d4 cd
3. c3 dc
4. Nxc3
From Whites point of view, whais there that white can try to form his middle game plans around??

Message: May I be the first to take a stab at answering the Sicilian Question.
E4--C5
D4--CD
C3--DC
NC3.
For a sacrificed pawn white has two developed pieces: E-pawn and Queens Knight, while black has no pieces developed. White now has opened up the d-file the C1 to H6 diagonal the F1 to A6 diagonal and the D1 to A4 diagonal. He has complete freedom to develop his bishops and Queen in accordance to how Black develops his pieces. Accurate and swift development for White should put immediate pressure to any development schemes by Black.

Message: While I would agree that white has a slight development advantage, black is but one PIECE behind in development, which, due to white's first move, is white's inherent advantage. Ergo...the only true advantage is the pawn at e4, which is offset by the loss of material. With sharp play, black can maintain a decent position, and can always give the pawn back at his leisure for other advantages.

Message: Not to mention black's 5-4 kingside pawn advantage...looking at the position, I think I would play 4....e6 to give my king's bishop some breathing room and then possibly follow with 5...d6 (although that is probably backwards from what should be played...LOL) to prevent an immediate e5. I dont like the ruy lopez, so would stay away from the immediate (yet logical) 4...e5 and Nc6 which invites 5.Nf3 followed by Bb5 leaving you with d6 and a backward pawn on the open queen's file. (yecch!) Would prefer a slightly cramped position to the above lopez type position without a white queen's pawn. Since this is my opinion, dont assume I know what I am talking about...LOL

Message: As for the Sicilian... the teste fly came closest. White has a small lead in developement but more important he has the open c and d files. a later e5 is always a threat. In this opening black usually has to struggle looking for good places for his Q. The c and d file causes developmental issues for black. So yes... a lead in developement is also important here, it is more significant then just having the move.
You guys get NO brownie points for the Lopez question!!!

Message: First thought (dont like it tho...) would be a tactical Qg5 threatening the bishop and the white g pawn. Actually the question is probably more strategic in nature, in which case I would consider letting white take the pawn back undefended, while developing my pieces and forcing white to retreat his bishop, again giving me a developing move at his expense of a tempo.

Message: Let me wield my butter knife and take a stab at this Spanish Cleric Question.
_Firstly, white's response to ND4, with NxD4 is the weakest of the possible and plausible responses. This move Nd4 by black "The Bird" move to the Ruy is as rare as hens teeth in any recent GM play or CChess. The only two people that I know of from recent GK history that have played this variation with Black are the present DJ222 and the departed schachfruend, both females.
Now to the ginsu knives. What has White done and what has Black accomplished, in a nut shell that is!
1. 3. ....Nd4 challenges the two developed minor pieces of white. Attacking the undefended Ruy bishop on b5 and the protected Knight on f3. This also avoids the exchange variation of the Ruy by and by. It is hoped that White will move his attacked bishop and black will take the f3 Knight thus untidying whites Kingside pawn structure.
2. 4. NxD4 -- ExD4 Now what do we have what? Yes Johnny, you raised you hand first. We have what body part swell ten times it's normal size when stimulated. Kazing the iris of the eye, shame on the rest of you for thinking otherwise.
We have: White; has two pieces developed, a pawn on E4 and the Kings (Ruy) bishop sitting on b5 twiddling his thumbs doing nothing, all alone and undefended. Once he gets kicked around a bit by C6 he will eventually settle on B3 controlling the A2 to G8 diagonal. White has a castle move in hand soon to defend his other undefended E-pawn. But the most telling is his Queenside pawns are stymied by Blacks rascal pawn on D4. This pawn is unassailable at the moment and it will be difficult for white to develop fluidly around it. Yes d3 Nd2 and Nb3 but isn't that where we want the Bishop, hmm!
3. Black has a very brave pawn on d4 and no other developed piece, and it isn't even his move. But at this juncture it doesn't matter as he will wait to see if White moves his unattacked, at the moment Bishop or castle.
Tha tha tha tha that's all folks!

Message: I guess I was too lazy to raise my hand.. and now there is hardly anything left for me to say! Had I answered in time, I am sure Your Highness Fearless Leader Roxy the Cairo Killer would have given me half a dozen brownie points for the sicilian game! I am in a Smith-Morra Gambit mini and Roxy is in the same one I think. I'll try to earn my brownie points then by crushing him in our two games ;-).....
Since our Captain has already answered sicilian, I move to the Lopez ....Nd4 thing, even though our Professor, Tertsius Marvel Crystal Ball Guy has analyzed it too pretty comprehensively...
From what I know, for .....Nd4, white can play 0-0 also rather than capture. But anyway, the question now has to do with the capture. So after ed4, as I see it:
(1) Black cramps white's development for the time being. The natural square for the b1 knight, c3, is no longer available. Its not easy to make that available either, as playing c3 would lead to a whole lot of other troubles, where black can even follow with something like d3 or even leave it there suitably. Also, black has the e-file, though I don't see this as a major advantage at all. Yes, black will get a tempo with c6 sometime.. perhaps even b5 will follow. Once the bishop is on b3, a5 etc is also possible. But basically, the bishop on b3 is rather stupid. Also, the c6, is sometimes important as it gives black's queen a chance to swing in that direction (though that happens more in some Schliemann Jaenisch gambit lines against the Ruy Lopez ?). Hmm.. what else.. yes, white's e4 pawn needs to be supported in case black attacks it, and that's again not easy. If white goes for d3, Nd2, everything is ugly, as knight stays there (remember, b3 square is also not availble, even though it wasn't great either!).
(2) One point I think Tert hasn't mentioned, that strikes me is, white has lost his f3 knight. White has also taken his f2 bishop away to the other side, and perhaps will have it locked up somewhere on b3.... so as I see it, whtie has lost his pieces to defend the kingside... and white will have to sooner or later go 0-0. Does this leave white's king in a little danger? Perhaps? Do you think black can go ahead with a mad pawn chase like h5 g5 etc? Maybe not, maybe yes. But black can certainly go Nf6 and then Bg4 sometime.. and then queen will also be under fire.. basically, I see that white's king is unsafe, because his only two pieces that normally guard the king are over!
(3) In a nutshell, even though white has some apparent lead in development, I get the feeling, black is sure to end up with some space advantage, at least on the queenside, and more active play on the kingside.....
The question had to do with what black can exploit, so I amnot writing about white, since its almost 3am here!
Roxy Sir, how many Brownie points do I get? Just tell me that I get more than my rival Tert and I'll be happy!
