Subject: A Meeting Area For Team Captains

Message:
Hello everyone, and first off thank you for taking time to read my posting. I hope everyone is well and having a wonderful day! This is posted for everyone, but I am most especially interested in what other captains have to say about this subject.
What does everyone think of the idea of asking the Webmaster of this site to create an area for team captains to get together and talk about issues and concerns related to being a captain here? Also it might be a way to aid in setting up team matches with an easier method. For example, I have a couple of low scoring players on my team and two that I consider to have high scores. Hunting for matches for all of them is hard work. Maybe if the was a captain's page, I could just post who's looking for a match, or check to see if there are any like postings for my players. Also, some on my team won't play nothing but 3 day per move matches, other will only play 5 and a few want nothing but 7 day games. It would be nice to see up front who matches who on different teams. These are just a few ideas I think could help captains here.
Mostly I would like it to be a place for captains to surport each other, work out problems we might have, to help each other; and I must say, I have found a certain surprising amount camaraderie with a number of my fellow captains. To extend that with others would be welcomed by me, which is why I think it would be welcomed by others. Well OK, that is the start of my idea for GameKnot, please let me know what you all think. Again, thank you all for your time and attention. Cecilia!

Brilliant idea!

Message:
I think this is a great idea. The theory behind starting my own team was because I felt I could do a good job as captain. However I've since learned a lot *lol*. I'd very much appreciate the chance to talk to other captains, to see how they cope with certain things, to talk over prospective team matches and such forth. I'm fortunate in that most of mine would take whatever games I give them and aren't really fussed about time limits. However the issue of team morale and making sure everyone knows what is going on and feels included is one that I'd feel I needed help on.

Having plonked myself in that position I also think I have something to offer new captains, even if its only to show them how not to do it!

So all in all a great idea, whether it has its own space or is left here. Certainly its own space would be better, but I'm all for it either way, thank you Cecilia for getting the ball rolling.

Cheers
Charlie

Agreed, it's a good idea

Message:
but it's been tried before, and all those team captain threads have failed so far.
Maybe it's because all of us are already so busy with team matters as well as our own games. I know I am.

Well lets try it and see ;-)

Message:
For instance how do other captains try and bond their teams? Do you try and bond your teams? It seems to me a lot of mine just want to play the games rather than take part in a lot of team activitiies.....any thoughts or suggestions folks?
Cheers
Charlie

How To Bond With Your Team 101

Message:
It is well known that I have the most loyal and devoted team members on GK and it's all because of the time I spend bonding with them.
"How do you do it xena?!" I hear you cry. Well I wouldn't normally divulge my secrets but I'm in a sharing/caring kind of mood right now, so here are my proven methods for team-togetherness.

(Note:The below information is all true and has, at one time or another, been implemented by myself and my team executives)

-This week we had a Survivor Style Vote-Off and it put the wind right up the team in a most excellent fashion. It gave them something to do between chess games as they thought of creative reasons as to why they should vote off other ( nominated) team members. This amused them greatly and appealed to their nasty ruthless streak. No one got voted off by the way, as this was not the point of the exercise.

-Attempt to 'trade' them to other team and have a forum about this to get them really worried. I am currently attempting to trade members whose profile pics I don't like.

-Have a cool website with lots of black and gold on it. This intrigues them for they like bright shiny things. www.pawnstars.org/

-Make them send in postcards and publish them on said website.
www.pawnstars.org/socialdude/

- Hold an 'Awards Night'. Give a couple of commendations to a few select team members and blow raspberries at the rest. Make them bring their own beer.

- Have competitions. For example we have recently had a limerick competition and a caption competition. Promise them prizes but never deliver.

-Have a Player of the Month 'Trophy'. Give this award to a team member who hasn't turned up for three months.

-Have Deadly Rivals. Select a team (or several) to 'hate' (clear it with the opposing captain first though) and milk it for all it's worth.

These are just a few of the methods I find effective for a happy and loyal team. I hope you find them helpful. Copies of this lecture are available on CD for a nominal fee... please message me for details.

Yours Xena ( Captain of 'The Pawn Stars')

Hmmmm

Message:
And how do you enforce that one? Most of the ones leaving my team I've not been sorry to see go. But there's been a couple. As Soarehelle has said to me before where/how do you draw the line. They may have perfectly valid reasons but I don't like to make them feel they have no choice.
Cheers

i'm not a team captain but...

Message:
... i must sing the praises of my glorious queen SWMBO (aka Xena)

We may have a crap rating, players leaking games left right and centre, a group of us sat on a
deserted island threatening outright rebellion, the mythical axe of the team coach always
hovering above our necks and a web page that sux, but we do have a great team and that is all
thanks to myself and our social executive chap.... er playing off our glorious leader. And because
of that we would happily crawl across broken glass with our flies undone just for her. I keep being
told it is called 'team spirit', which can be seen in any number of our forum postings.

I concur with greyrabbit; this is a wonderful idea and will help all the captains find team games
for their players.

oh and I'm still available for trading/transfer etc.

i thanky you

I HATE TO BE A PARTY POOPER

Message:
THE IDEA IN ITSELF ISNT BAD BUT WE ALREADY HAVE A PLACE TO MEET HERE IN THE TEAM FORUMS. I THINK IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF TIME FOR MIKE TO SET ASIDE AN AREA FOR THIS. THE MAIN REASON IS BECAUSE I DONT THINK IT WOULD BE USED TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL. SO MANY CAPTS ALREADY USE THE TEAM FORUMS FOR WHATEVER THEY NEED. I FOR ONE HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM GETTING GAMES OR SHARING IDEAS BY USING THE TEAM FORUMS.

And Yet ....

Message:
Not with standing, there has been nothing but positive responses from everyone I've talked to. I have been told that this idea has "sort of" been tried before. And yes, this forum page does work for SOME of what I want the captain's place to do. But it in NO WAY does all of it. Not even close. To have a place where you can see at a glance who on the other person's team is open for a game, how many days per move they want, what their score is, and whatever else we decide we should add will be valuable. Will every last captain use it? No. Most will, and that's the point. I'm seeing two very different messages, the ones here in "public" and the ones I'm getting in private. Those say over and over again they wish they could have somewhere to go to talk about troubles without worrying the team mates. Face it, at public forum page you have to hold back a bit so as not to burden your team. If there was a private captains place, it still would be "public" in a sense, but it would be easier to talk. I've talked to at least 25 captains about this. Three have said the idea is not new here. No one has said it's a bad idea. I think it's an "idea who's time has come!"

You see, the problem with any thread

Message:
in the English language is that they're always being invaded by hordes of Pawn Stars and their rivals, relatives and relations.
Still, this one has been remarkably uncontamined with Belgians so I guess we're lucky in a way.

Talk about a backhander

Message:
Well gru88y, while I appreciate the intended 'sentiment' of your post, rest assured that I will not be asking you to crawl across anything with anything undone. As for the 'webpage that sux' Coach and I take extreme exception to that. Far from being sucky web-wise, we are often complimented on it.
That aside, I don't really think we need a specific team captain area...just a thread like this does the job. It isn't anything we couldn't do ourselves. Maybe team captains, who wanted to, could take turns starting off each thread? Just a thought.

If, by chance, I have just reiterated something that has already been said in this thread it is because I don't have time to read every post..I'm too busy thrashing gru88y with a big carp. That's an inside -team- 'joke', so don't worry 'bout it.
