OTB players?

Message:
Do we have any current/past serious OTB players on this team? Our captain Roxy used to play long back and was easily 2300-2400 strength in my opinion! Even now, he seems to be whipping the age old top players of GK with ease! 1 win and 3 draws out of four games against cairo + carlosmart is no joke!!!!

Do we have FIDE rated players here? Or those who were high FIDE rated players at one time?

Okay hopefully some of you are or have been strong OTB players, to take care of the present and the past. As for the future, I will be a 2800 rated player by the year 2800!

Roxy, no response from you on the Ruy Lopez ....Nd4 question! No hurry, but have all of us put together also missed any important point?

OTB

Message:
I played a few tournaments in my late teens early twenties. Then I quit for a while, I moved to the States, and bored because I knew just about nobody, I decided to play OTB again. Played a few tournaments in few months, with a new rating that was raising; but then I got married, leaving chess again with a rating stucked at just below 1400 (USCF). I agree with inarion, the rush and the adrenaline in winning (and losing) is incomparable with Internet.

Michael's and my game

Message:
Following is a bit of analysis (am looking forward to seeing Michael's analysis) which mainly offers my perceptions of the game.
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 c5 (Blumenfield variation of the Benoni is as close as I can come to describing my opening).
4. d5 exd5 5.cxd5 d6 7.e4 (here is the struggle: Black will try to take advantage of his queenside pawn majority, while white will try to force play in the center and king side with his pawn majority)
7..0-0 8.Nd2 (white preparing for queenside play? wondered at this time if Bg4 would be worth it 8...Bg4 9.f3 Bh5).
8...a6 9.a4! (effectively limiting my queenside advance)
9...Re8 10.Be2 Nbd7 11.f4 (now I really start to feel some pressure and a need to break up the position...but how?)
11...b6 (idea here is ...Bb7 followed by ...b5)
12.0.0 Bb7 13.Qc2 Qc7 (13...b5? 14.axb5 axb5 14.Nxb5...not good).
14.Nc4 (notice the white knights, they remain in this position for most of the rest of the game, continually putting pressure on my position. Thwarting any queenside breakout I could come up with as well as influencing events in the center and eventually kingside)
14...Bb8 (ok...attack on b6, pawn advance to e5, yikes!...still looking for a way to safely break out).
15.Be3 (at this point I really started to worry about his b4 pawn advance as well). 15...Qb8 16.Bf3 (preparing for e5? I wasnt really sure what this was, other than bad for me..LOL)
16...Bc8 17.Rfb1 Bb7 (I considered Nf8 here, but the queenside pressure was on. There were so many possibilities at this point. Didnt like the thought of the e5 push, followed by dxe5, fxe5 and then d6 with my rook sitting there in the corner in the bishop's sights. At the same time I was considering an eventual b5 push of my own...those knights were killing me...LOL)
18.b4 cxb4 19.Rxb4 (now here is my chance! (or so I thought) to break free).
19...Nc5 20.Rb2! (was expecting to force this, but he took the wind out of my sails: 20.Rab1 Nfd7 21Bg4 a5...didnt really like the idea of a knight incursion to b5, but I figured I could deal with that later...I needed space, initiative, threats!).
20...Nfd7 21.Bd4 (jeez, e5 again) 21...Qc7
22.e5 (yep) dxe5 23.fxe5 Rb8 (finally, my rook was no longer a target for the bishop at f3, and could support a hopeful b5 push)
24.Rf1 f6 25.Bh5 (Michael! Stop! LOL) 25...fxe5
26.d6 Qc8 (I looked at Qc6, but that seemed to result in a horrible exchange of material, leaving me with a knight, 2 bishops and a rook versus Michael's Queen, 2 rooks and a pawn down...not palatable).
27.Bf7+ kh8 28.Bxe8 exd4 29.Ne4 Nf6 (hoping for an exchange of knights or at least to block the rooks influence on my back rank).
30.Ng5! (for some reason I did not expect this, was expecting Ne5 instead. This move proves to be such a pain to me from here on out that I would consider it as one of the crucial points in the game).
30...d3 31.Qc3 (I had almost overlooked the obvious mate at h7!! Ergo, the pawn advance).
31...Ne6 (here I looked at ...b5 32.axb5 axb5 33.Rxb5 Ba6 34.Rxb8 Qxb8 35.Nf7+ uh oh! this is where I really realized what trouble I was in)
32.Nf7+ Kg8 33.d7 Qc5+ 34.Kh1 d2? (I had the flawed idea of forking his rook and queen (..Ne4) if he took, which he wouldnt, however, I had overlooked something! Nh6+ followed by bad stuff no matter what I did...LOL, so I didnt..)
35.Rxd2 Be7 36.Nh6+ (yep) gxh6
37.Rxf6 Bxf6 38. Qxf6 and time to resign...LOL
Great game Michael! Looking forward to your analysis, which I am sure will be more to the point.

Message:
Some of you may be familiar with my commentating and some of you may not. For those of you who are not. I usually do not give lines and lines of analysis. Instead I like to talk about ideas and plans. I like to explain why I made a certain move rather then giving various lines of analysis for alternate moves. Some of you may like this and some of you may not. For those of you that are interested in variations of different moves, post your comments here, I would be more then happy to analyze with you. Second, because analyzing takes me a great deal of time in typing, I type this all out in notepad and then I copy it to the forum. For some strange reason, this causes random spaces between sentences and moves. I apologize if that makes following the analysis difficult. I'm still trying to figure it out??? And lastly, I just bought a new house and I am moving so, I have postponed my games. I do not know when I will lose internet connection and I do not know for how long?? But, do not worry... it should not be for too long.

White: "roxanol"
Black: "inarion"

1. d4 Nf6
2. c4 e6
{I usually do not commentate on the openings because there
are too many this and thats and what if's! There is no secret "best" opening. Each have
their own pro's and con's. One's choice of opening or a variation is only a
matter of preference. However, this game was started on the theme of an
opening idea. What we have here would appear to be black heading into a
Nimzo-Indian. Some 1.d4 players do not particularly care playing against it
(me in particular) so the next move is an attempt to avoid it.}

3. Nf3 c5
{Herein lies Black's true intentions, he is heading into the aggressive and
tactical waters of the Benoni. I read in a book by GM Lombardy that Benoni
means "son of sorrow". What language it is taken from, I do notknow?}

4. d5
{And with this move, White accepts the Benoni. What Black players choosing this
move order need to take into consideration is 4.Nc3 steering the game into an
English Opening.}

4 ...exd5
5. cxd5 d6
{This move is not forced as some may believe
but that will be the discussion of my next game with inarion.}

6. Nc3 Be7
{This move did not surprise me here but I had only seen in once before in a
game against...(I cant remember, but I will find it) and it did surprise me
then! The usual move and also a thematic move in the Benoni is ...g6 and Bg7.
I still have not made up my own mind of wether this is an improved version of
the Benoni or an inferior version? The d6 pawn is the Benoni's one true
weakness, this seems to remove that weakness but in return.... you exchange
the powerful Benoni Bishop and its influence on the central dark squares and
the queenside and you give it gaurd duty, for apawn!!}

7. e4 O-O
8. Nd2 a6
9.a4 Re8
{...Re8 is a common attacking move in the Benoni. However, in this
newfound ...Be7 variation, I think it does more harm then anything else. I
believe the Nf6 needs the e8 square! Why? The Knight can pull gaurd duty so
the Bishop can move to f6. 9 ...Ng4-e5 would be possible but there are
problems with that; first... there would be nobody watching the d pawn and
second, since the b8 Knight has no place to call home thanks to the a6 pawns
and whites d5 oawn, the Nb8 belongs on e5!! Another reason for 9 ...Ne8? Black
has been stoppen in queenside operations, he must look elsewhere i.e. 9 ...Ne8
10.Qb3 f5!?}

10. Be2 Nbd7
11. f4 b6
12. O-O Bb7
13. Qc2 Qc7
14. Nc4
{Nf3-d2-c4 is called the Knights Tour in the "usual" Benoni. It is usually accompanied by
a Bf4 and sometimes a Nc3-b5 to give a rapid assault against Black's weak d6
pawn. There are different ways to play a position. In attacking Chess, you
have to find targets, immobilize them and attack them. You need to create
threats, then create more threats, then more... keep threatening. When you
have created more then one weakness in the enemies position, find ways to
switch your attacks from one weakness to the other and then back again. This
is that invincible stuff I was talking about.... initiative. You cant see it,
you just have to know when you have it or when your opponent has it. Here, my
target is that b6 pawn.}

14 ...Bd8
{I like this move but, I think it is one move too
early? I think this move helps re-enforce b6 but also, it keeps a little
control over my e pawn which I am struggling to push forward. however, because
an e5 push is a threat from me, I think black may have been wise to perhaps
play 14 ...Nf8, making room for the f6 Knight when I do play e5. Also, Nf8-g6
combined with Nf6-d7 adds nore control over e5}

15. Be3
{More indirect pressure b6.}

15 ...Qb8
{I dont think I like this move too much and
I'm not sure if I understand what Black was planning? I thought perhaps
planning on Bd8-c7 but that takes away almost all pieces from the kingside? I
think 15 ...h5 16.Rac1 Ng4 17.Bd2 Rc8 18.Qd1 Ndf6 is better.}

16. Bf3
{Overprotecting e4 so, when an e5 push does come, my pieces can use the vacant
square.}

16 ...Bc8
{This move surprised me. I was expecting ...Bc7 in accordance of
black's last move. I am not sure if black had a plan here or if he was just
waiting?}

17. Rfb1 Bb7
{17 ...Qc7 18.b4 Rb8 would have been a way to defend.
I was hoping black would have tried 17 ...a5 in which I was planning 18.Nb5!}

18. b4 cxb4
{Ouch!! Anything but this. The half open b file can only benefit
white and blacks pieces are in no position to take the open c file.}

19. Rxb4 Nc5
20. Rb2
{An advantage is an advantage and a weakness is a weakness, right?
Wrong! Both can be either static (permanent) or dynamic (temporary). Blacks b
pawn is a static weakness as is his d pawn, they are not going anywhere, there
is no hurry for me to play Rab1 and capture b6. Applying pressure to b6
creates tension, caturing b6 would win material but it would relaese then
tension. it is best to keep tension as long as possible. here, I feel I have
consolidated the queenside in my favor, now... I want to strike on the
kingside but before I can successfully hit the kingside, I have to control the
center (chess 101). The rook moves back to b2 for mobility to other parts of
the board. I usually prefer the 3rd rank but here, that is not possible.}

20 ...Nfd7
21. Bd4
{Not only controlling e5 further but also aiming more directly at the kingside.}

21 ...Qc7
{In anticipation of a attack across the board... maybe 21 ...Ra7 would be
more defensive minded? However, there is a devious intention behind the
innocent looking 22 ...Qc7}

22. e5
{No further preparation for the e5 push is
neccessary. Remember dynamic and static advantages? Remember how initiative is
a dynamic advantage? It is not permanent. Here, if white wasted one more move
with 22.Re1? black could have stopped whites strong initiative with 22 ...Ne6!
23.de Qxc4 24.ed Qxd4 25.Qf2 Qxf2}

22 ...dxe5
23. fxe5 Rb8
{White has obtained
dominance over the queenside and the center. He has now but to launch an
attack on against the kingside. the white pawns on d5 and e5 are constrictive
to black who can not easily use the c6, d6, e6 and f6 squares. f6 in
particular is the best square for a Knight in defense of its King. In our case
however because of an attack down the f file, I am certain f6 will be played
at some point. I planned on switching my attack to the light squares e6 and f7
with knight jumps like Ne4-g5 and Ne5}

24. Rf1 f6
25. Bh5
{This is to apply
more control over the f7 square since weakening f6 would not be wise. There is
essentially nothing black can do about 25.Bh5}

25 ...fxe5
26. d6 Qc8
27. Bf7+
{Capablanca's games used to be rich in these "in-between moves". Of course, 27.
Bxe8 is expected and will still be played but, this in-between move forces
away f7's only defender and pushes black's king more into a corner.}

27 ...Kh8
{27 ...Kf8 of couse, allows a quick finish after 28.Qxh7 Nf6 29.Rxf6!}

28. Bxe8 exd4
{Black has accomplised in removing one of my Bishops giving him the "2
Bishops". Not only The 2 Bishops but 2 bishops with an open position. However,
I think this game will show that my Knights are to be preferred in this
position.}

29. Ne4
{Here they come! As mentioned earlier, I intend attack the
light squares around black's king with Ne4-g5 and Nc4-e5. black can throw a
monkey wench into my plan with 29 ...Bxe4 but I have a feeling most players
would not want to let go of 2 Bishops in an open position.}

29 ...Nf6
{This innocent looking defensive move allows my Knights to jump right in. The g5 square is no
longer off limits.}

30. Ng5 d3
{Hey!! Good move!! My mind was thinking in
other gears. I was expecting 30 ...Be4 first.}

31. Qc3 Ne6
{Maybe 31 ...Nce4 instead?}

32. Nf7+ Kg8
33. d7
{I will leave it up to the
pundits to decide if it may have been better to play Rbf2 instead. Now arn't
you glad I played Rb2 awhile back?}

33 ...Qc5+
34. Kh1 d2
{I was expecting black to
take advantage of my undefended queen with 34 ...Bd5! In which I can see
nothing better then 35.Nfe6 b5!? 36.ab ab (black finally solves his queenside
problems). 37.Bf7 Kh8 38.Bxe6 Bxe6 leaving me with only a small advantage. I
believe 34 ...d2 to be a mistake. This seemingly quiet little doomed pawn was
serving an important role for black. It was cutting off access to the kingside
for my queen.}

35. Rxd2
{...Bd5 will no longer work here because without
black's pawn on d3 my queen can swing over to g3 attacking the undefended Rb8
i.e. 35 ...Bd5? 36.Nxd8 (to remove a defender of c7) Nxd8 37.Qg3! A move
that would not have been possible if a black pawn stood on d3.}

35 ...Be7
36. Nh6+ gxh6
{36 ...Kh8 37.Ne5! is bad for black but I think the immediate 36 ...gh
is worse.}

37. Rxf6
{Going after the Rb8 is also possible with 37.Qg3 (let
that be a lesson not to leave pieces undefended!! Just like my undefended
queen could have caused me problems back at move 34. On the flip side, if you
see that your opponent has an undefended piece, look hard for a combination!!)}

37 ...Bxf6
38. Qxf6
{And here my worthy opponent resigned.}

Message:
ok, ok I was not going to say a thing... but... nooooooooooo, somebody just had to mention drugs, and one thing is for sure, if you are going to "just say NO" lets not get drugs involved ok?? and will you all please let every one know, what in the name of that , that is holly, you are talking about:
"aww now", Lily tomblin said that?? and did you wash your finger before you typed her name??? blasfemy,blasfemy if you ask me
"Better life thru Chemistry", is this what you may call self medication or is this a new game in town?? and better yet how come I did not see an invite to it???
"come come now", does this infer that being a dangerous toy could be ...lets put it this way... bad for your mental health??
"Well as Dr. Evil I shave my" do we really have to shave there?????? I mean that is pretty close to...????? never mind (was very close to IT anyways)

one more thing, when you all analyze a game, will you please type slowly so us slow minded folk can keep up with it!!!! you all go to fast as if you did understad what was being said, do you??

still waiting for the new and improved opening N-QR3, of course with the i9 square variation

Now for a word from our sponsors

Message:
For existentialists everywhere, and philosophers in Tennessee, and psychiatrists in Alabama...we will try taking another look at life...or it taking another life at Look? Anyways..in the immortal words of Douglas Adams:
"Life... is like a grapefruit. It's orange and squishy, and has a few pips in it, and some folks have half a one for breakfast."
I prefer to chew mine slowly, and add a lot of sugar...LOL (course...we wont even mention that sandwich that comes up from time to time...LOL)

ok,ok I did not know this was going to be a pic-nic, but if you do insist, and that is going to be the menu, please do include me! by the way is there a possibility that mud cakes could be provided, I mean if your going to all that trouble for poor old me lets make it memorable! been humping and loving it,for a long time, humping is good for the game of chess!! (just to keep it related)

pawns-kill, I do think you have me confused with somebody else, I have never ever been that close to a tree, now, I do from time to time bark at trees, there is no question about that, but, and this is a big, big, but, I have never in my life been under or that close to a tree, well, exept for that very strage time in my life... you know all those alcoholic things... but anyways the police and judge where so nice, I have not done it again,

now, now tertsius, you know very well indeed, that rhubarb, even though it could possibly be considered hallucinogenic, it is at best very temporary, so no it is not, (I think is not), the reason for or about the nic
about the pawns-kill, have you par chance checked the many military juntas of the lesser known places around the globe? he could possibly be listed there!!

tertsius, I do hope, and, this is for your own good, that you did get civil and military clearence to dibulge such delicate inter/intraplanetary secrets, or have you already forgotten the secret oath "ask nut,tell nut", by the way, whose turn is it to rotate the cones next month????

are you'll enjoying your games???

I have it all sussed

Message:
that pawns-kill is a former mercenary. Join the Army, go to strange and exotic lands, meet new and exciting people and kill them. I hear that pawns up the nose is one of the black arts least understood methods of dispatch. Touche pawns-kill=paratrooper=armored=wetwork=neutrilizer=slayer. So all these misspelled words is a CIA coverup to hide your lethel status, but not clever enough rutabaga breath.

As for the more diabolical rubar10, he is misunderstood souchef from NYCity that had his Reuban sandwich on wheat bread ridiculed.

I am one of the eternals and I have not revealed any secrets, as a matter of fact there are no earthly secrets, everything has always been here and man has simply stumbled upon it. Chew on that for awhile!!

As for my breath that is the distinct smell of Laphroaig Single Malt and a Cuban Ceegar! I only use the curiously strong Altoids~
