Who is interested in a King of the Mountain Competition

The rules are simple. First, the lowest rated player in the competition challenges the player just above him/her in the rating list. Then, the winner of this game challenges the next one in the list, and so on... The last to win is the king (or queen, hu?) of the competition! Note that the lowest rated player always plays with white....

So, who want to play this competition within our team?

Best,

PS1 Toni, you play only a single game at a time in this King of the mountain / ladder competition

PS2 beholder28, I think that in case of draw the game has to be replayed, the lower rated opponent having white again...

PS3 we can make the rule a bit more flexible and say that the lower rated players has always the choice of color, hu?

...I mean, with the replay-system in case of a draw it's not THAT important, but I know that in some kinds of competition (mostly unformal, such as 5-min. blitz) the "rule" is that White has to play for a win because draws count as a win for Black (that is, the guy who played as Black "keeps his seat").

NB1) The lower rated player always has the choice of colors.
NB2) In case of draw, the game has to be replayed.
NB3) When the last game in the ladder is played a new ladder is started.
NB4) Lets call the games: Ladder game, les cavaliers fous...

muktadir - yanm
King of the Mountain tournament

1. c4 e5

The English seems to be muktadir's favorite opening with White.

2. Nc3 Nf6 3. g3 Bb4

This is a typical idea for Black in the English: its purpose is usually to fight for the light squares in the center (e4 and d5) by exchanging the dark-squared bishop for White's c3-knight, who's controlling them.

4. Qb3 Nc6 5. e3 O-O

It sounds strange after only 5 moves, but Black is already clearly ahead in development: he has brought 3 minor pieces into play, the f8-rook is ready to join them AND his king is safe after k-side castling. White instead has developed only his queen and a knight that's going to be exchanged immediately, and in the meantime his king is stuck in the center, still three (!) moves away from castling: this is enough to send the alarm bell ringing.

6. Bg2

Even though I don't play exactly the main lines in the English Opening, when I set up the structure with pawns on d2-e3-f2 I tend to put this bishop on e2. Anyway, this is mainly a matter of taste and obviously 6.Bg2 is not wrong.

6...Bxc3 7. Qxc3

To be honest I don't like this recapture: muktadir has played it before (in a slightly different position) but now White's queen seems to be doing nothing: from c3 she controls very few squares. I prefer 7.bxc3, recapturing towards the center and opening lines for White's queen's rook (the b-file) and bishop (the c1-a3 diagonal).

7...d6

Now Black's pawn chain and the c6-knight restrict very much the white queen. Maybe this is what prompted White to push his d-pawn forward (he must open some lines...) but with the king still in the center this requires very careful play, because Black is more active and it's much easier for him to play the next few moves.

8. d4 exd4 9. exd4 Qe7+ 10. Ne2

This looks a bit passive: now Black's pieces spring forward very aggressively. I think I'd play 10.Be3.

10...Bg4 11. Bf1

This is terribly passive and loses more tempi: White's bishop goes back to the starting square but the h1-a8 diagonal has been weakened. Maybe White underestimated the danger of his king's position. It wasn't too late to play 11.Be3. Probably muktadir did not want to lose castling rights (after 11...Bxe2 12.Kxe2) but now White is under real pressure: the opponent attacks and he's only defending.

11...Rfe8 12. Be3 Bf3 13. Rg1 Ng4 14. O-O-O

Losing a valuable pawn, but the position was very difficult to play with White. All his pieces are very passive.

14...Nxe3 15. fxe3 Qxe3+

Forcing a queen trade.

16. Qxe3 Rxe3 17. Rd2 Rae8 18. Nc3 Nb4 19. b3

This error made things easier for yanm, but Black's advantage was too big anyway.

19...Rxc3+ 20. Kb2 Rce3
21. a3 Nc6 22. g4 Re1 23. h3 Be2 24. Bxe2 Rxg1 0-1

Notes on the analyse

Message:
Thanks you beholder28.

A further note. What surprised me most was 10.Ne2, as I was expecting 10.Be3. This prompted me to push forward and attack with all I was worth;)

A question, do you trhink that 5... O-O came too early? I mean, I was thinking, "Ok he is still 3 moves from castling. Lets castle on my side, and bring the king-side rook in the open." What would have been better to play?

5...O-O

Message:
No I don't think it came too soon, I think it was a strong move at that moment. Often we tend to limit ourselves by thinking that castling is only a defensive move, but this is not always true: in your case it is especially clear that NOT ONLY 5...O-O protects the black king BUT ALSO develops the rook. Like killing two birds with one shot. This gap in development does not mean that Black has a winning advantage, of course, but now White has to be careful because even a small inaccuracy like 10.Ne2 may lead to trouble.

A further analysis

Message:
Here is an analysis of the game by our teammate blatman

<snip>
I thought it was a good game. Here's my analytical effort of it, written deliberately before reading beholder's stuff.

1.c4, e5; 2.Nc3, Nf6; 3.g3, Bb4; 4.Qb3, Nc6; 5.e3, 0-0; 6.Bg2, Bxc3; 7.Qxc3, d6; 8. d4. Opening up the game and the e-file before White's ready. Most of White's problems come from this open file. Maybe 8.Ne2 and castles. 8. ..., ed; 9.ed, Qe7+; 10.Ne2. Simpler might have been Be3 and 0-0-0. White just has time for this. 10. ..., Bg4; 11.Bf1. (11.Be3(again), Rae8; 12.Nf4 - White wants to castle - Ne4; 13.Qd3, Bf5; 14.Nd5 forces the Queen off the e-file). 11.Bf1 may be a loser if Black can find the crushing move. 11. ..., Rfe8. I don't have the heart to criticise this. What could be more natural. In fact Qe4 is sweet followed by Bxe2 and then Nxd4 and White is toiling. 12.Be3. At last the dozey old Bishop hears the frantic cries of his King.

A pause here for a cold beer, some reflection and a conversation with my friend Fritz. As a result of the premature opening of the e-file Black is having all the fun. When I asked fritz to have a look at the position immediately after White's d4 he felt there was a slight advantage to Black. Dare I disagree? Yup. Much more difficult for White. For Black to maintain a better position he keeps playing naturally; the onus is always on the defence to find the good moves. If he does his game stands up but if he makes one mistake he could plunge over the precipice. In any event, it's Black calling the shots. The best White hopes for is a playable ending. To illustrate my point there are at least 8 moves black could make now that maintain the advantage. White will never have that luxury.

So 12.Be3, Bf3. Making way for the Knight on g4. 13.Rg1, Ng4; 14. 0-0-0. Understandable. The King's been staring down the gun barrell of the e-file for a long time. One possibility was 14.Nf4(by Fritz). It's devilishly cunning. If Black is tempted to simplify into an ending by playing the natural 14. ..., Nxe3 he doesn't get any more than a pawn and a long arduous ending at that, eg, (15.fe, Qxe3; 16.Qxe3, Rxe3; 17.Kf2, Rae8; 18.Rc1 intending Rc3. Lots of chess there). 14. ..., Nxe3; 15.fe, Qxe3+; 16.Qxe3, Rxe3; 17.Rd2, Rae8; 18.Nc3, Nb4; 19.b3. There was no decent response here anyway.

It's always easy to talk a good game!!
