Subject: team captains encouraging cheating...
Message: I have seen several team pages on this site where the captain has stated that players must maintain a certain rating or achieve so many wins in order to remain in the team. does this type of demand encourage cheating?
your thoughts please...

Message: I have not had occasion to look at many team pages, but if captains are making those kinds of demands on players, I would think it tragic, and if it happened in our team I would be out of there so fast I wouldn't even bother opening the door first. But our team is just like most other teams, I,m sure. The majority of captains ask only for loyalty, honest effort for the team, and respect for the opponents ( like not timing out or insulting opponents) To anyone who is under such pressure to perform and is unhappy with it, I would say there are many many other teams who would be delighted to have you join them.

Message: I noticed that.
Just a note in her defence. She does stipulate a requirement for the first 8 games, perhaps trying to discourage time-wasters ?
I doubt if it is her intention to encourage cheating, but I agree, it is still mis-guided to place any win/loss requirement in the terms of joining a team.

Message: everybody is free to start a team with his special intentions.....if you say what you desire from your members, they are free to come or go....there are plenty of teams to join....
in my team I only except dutch-speaking members.....there are several players who want to join my team and blame me for refusing them for 'language-reasons'...does that mean I'm a bad captain or that we have a team that not belongs to GK ?

Message: Of course its acceptable to form a team with a common language, nationality, interest, etc. Thats completely different from stipulating that a team member must not fall below zero in his/her team games.
A team captain may be " free " to impose such a restriction.... however, it is surely against the " spirit " of team play in GK.
It is similar to the captains who are very selective in choosing the opposing teams they wish to play, both are done to achieve a team " rating " that the majority of us know is completey meaningless.

Message: But I certainly noticed some teams which I really donīt like playing with. So thatīs why I try to keep playing the teams I know play as sportsmen.
And I give every new team a chance. Besides that... what can you do?

Message: The free market will handle any restrictions -- as long as a team does not violate GK rules they are fine.
Unless of course you want to gather together for a group hug and sing "kumbuya"...
PS Assuming the negative in order to restrict team rules is giving power to the negative. Cheating is against GK rules whether on a team or not. The only proper definition of encouraging cheating is for the team captain to instruct team members to cheat -- anything else is not encouraging cheating.

Message: I'm glad someone told me the proper definition of encouraging cheating. I thought encouraging meant to : spur on; to inspire; or, to contribute to the progress or growth of.
maybe I should have used the word coercing, or goading, or fostering, or promoting, or nurturing etc.
the sentiment is the same - by placing win/loss demands on players the desperate ones will turn to other means to get their pts up.

Message: The principle here is personal responsibility for one's actions.
Assuming the example cited, the team captain didn't "make" a person cheat -- they cheated on their own. It is 100% their own fault they cheated and the team captain bears 0% responsibility -- cheating is against GK rules whether on a team or not.
Team rules don't cause cheating, weak morals cause cheating and people who act on them, regardless of the "reason" (read, "lame excuse"), should be punished.
There is no need to invent excuses to restrict team rules one personally doesn't like.

Message: Don't think that any captain told his teams player to use chess-computer, chess-programs etc. ofcourse is it possible to do, and at other sites have chess variations, like forest chess and others, started to prevent that. But I don't belive that anyone use chess-computer beside his/hers PC!
