season's greetings

Message:
Hi everybody.
I'll be leaving in a couple of days to spend a week or so in my hometown, and should be back at the start of january.
I want to say I feel sorry for having stayed a bit out of the team's life in these last few weeks. As I've told to our captain previously, this is really a hard time in my life as I'm very busy with my job, college and other personal problems, so that right now I'm struggling to find the time to keep my games going.
I feel it's a shame, because I think that the atmosphere in our team is quite lively and it would be pleasing to have more time to share with you.
By the way, congratulations to mirjana and blatman for their truly impressive results and thanks for your great contribution to the team.

I do hope I'll be able to find a little more time in january.
Meanwhile, I wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year.
See you all in ten days or so!

Allez les fous!!

Some blabla

Message:
Season's greetings! I just wanted to inform you that I'm going to make a month-long break in my chess activities. This means that I won't be issuing any team challenge during that period, or post in the forum... so you will have some free time;)

Anyway there are still the two team ladders going on. The first game of the second ladder is currently going on between pdcb and seekez, while the fifth game in the first ladder is going to start soon (mirjana vs butnerman).

Merry Christmass and Happy New Year!

Allez les fous,

~Yannick (proud captain of les cavaliers fous)

Message:
Here is blatman analysis of the third game of the 1st ladder(yanm vs mirjana).

-----

King's Gambit Accepted
1.e4,e5; 2.f4,ef; 3.Nf3,g5; 4.Bc4,g4; 5.0-0(Muzio Gambit or, as it will now be known, Le Capitaine Fous!) gxf3. 6.Qxf3,Qf6; 7.d3,Bc5+; 8.Kh1,d6; 9.Bxf4,Nc6. {Is 9. ...,Qxb2 playable? Probably, but I guess when your opponent has sacced a piece with the obvious intention of going for your throat you are best advised to forget about a mere pawn; anyway the game's going to get complicated enough. 10.Bd2 (a good move that crops up again in another line later), Qg7; 11.Qxf7,Qxf7; 12.Bxf7+,Ke7(this is a must as the Bishop needs to be won back after..)13.Bc3,Nh6; 14.Bxh8,Nxf7 followed by the White Bishop's retreat and an approximately level ending}. Back to the game. 10.Nc3 {It's typical of this type of opening: White is already threatening to win the game, and it goes like this, 11.Nd5,Qd8; 12.Bg5,Qxg5; 13.Qxf7+,Kd8; 14.Qxc7+,Ke8; 15.Qf7+,Kd8; 16.Qf8+,Kd7; 17.Rf7+,Nce7; 18.Bb5+,Ke6; 19.Raf1 and Black is about to collapse.} Back to the Game. 10. ...,Qg7. I think this is the simplest way to meet the above threat and avoiding any discovered attack tricks down the f-file. 11.Qh5,Nd8; 12.Nd5,Ne6; 13.Bg3. {This seems OK but there is a very testingly insidious move: 13.Bd2. The reason it's testing is that unless Black finds the right move she's lost! The more I study chess the less I know. Black must play 13. ...,Bd4. The danger is that Black might think, "I can play Bd4 if White plays Bc3". Not so. By then it's too late. Look at this. 13.Bd2,c6; 14.Bc3,Bd4(too late); 15.Bxd4,Qxd4; 16.Rxf7,cxd5; 17.Raf1,Ne7; 18.Rxe7!,Kd8(not Kxe7; 19.Rf7+,Kd8; 20.Qh4+ and Black gives up Queen and Knight and still gets mated) 19.Qh4,Bd7; 20.Bxd5,Rf8; 21.Rff7,Rxf7; 22.Rxf7+,Kc7; 23.Bxe6,Rd8; 24.Qxh7 and Black is bleeding to death. So lets try something else after 13. ...,c6; 14.Bc3. How about 14. ...,Qg6; 15.Nc7+,Kd8(note that Nxc7 fails to Bxf7+) 16.Qxg6,hxg6; 17.Nxa8,Kh7; 18.Bxe6(a small combo to make sure Black doesn't get the trapped Knight for nothing)...,Bxe6; 19.d4,Bb6; 20.Nxb6,axb6. And White emerges the exchange up with a probable endgame win. So what if Black tries after 13.Bd2,c6; 14.Bc3, Nd4 instead. This doesn't work either. 15.Rxf7,Qg6; 16.Nc7+,Kd8; 17.Qh4+,Nf6; 18.Nxa8,Rg8; 19.Qxf6+,Qxf6; 20.Rxf6 winning on material. Finally, indulge me please, if 13. ...,c6 fails what about 13. ...,Bd7. 14.Bc3,Bd4(too late again); 15.Rxf7!,Qxf7; 16.Nxc7+,Kf8; 17.Qxf7,Kxf7; 18.Bxd4,Rc8(Black can't save both Rooks) 19.Rf1+,Ke7; 20.Nd5+,Ke8; 21.Bxh8,Ne7; 22.Nf6+, the h-pawn goes and White's doing very well in the ending. So 13. ...,Bd4 I think needs to be played after White's 13.Bd2. If Black finds this move the precarious battle simply continues.} Back to the game. White has just played 13.Bg3 which I think is fine. 13. ...,c6 which seems simple and good. 14.Nc7. {I think Rae1 was worth a shot here. If Black plays cxd5 then after ed White gets his piece back because of the pin on the knight. In any event it brings White's last big gun swinging into the attack} So after 14.Nc7 Black played Nxc7. There now follows a critical passage of the game where Mirjana refuses to be blown off the board but does as everyone tries(!) to do against the violent onslaught that is the King's Gambit: look carefully for White's threats, don't be intimidated, all in the knowledge that it's White who needs the prove the sacrifices have been worth it. 15.Bxf7+{After 15.Rxf7 Black defends with 15. ...,Qg6 - the only move- 16.Qxg6(forced),hxg6 and with Queens off the board, even after 17.Rxc7 White doesn't seem to have enough) 15. ...,Kd8(only move for any advantage); 16.Bh4+,Ne7(only move...again!); 17.Bf6,Qf8(only mo....I think you've got the idea); 18.Bxh8. Who wouldn't? However, after cashing in his last few chips White's momentum has been broken down by solid defence. In fact White can test Black again. There is a drawing trap here. 18.Bc3. The idea is based on the lack of squares Black's Queen has. If Black responds with any of things like 18. ...,Rg8(offering the exchange) or 18. ...,h6(trying to extricate the Rook then White plays 19.Bb3, Qe8; 20.Bf7 and repetition. Black can never seek refuge by playing her Queen to d7 as then she loses a whole Rook and she can't afford that. Can Black avoid this? Yes, but must immediately play 18. ...,d5; after White's 18.Bc3. There follows 19.Qe5,Rg8(forced); 20.d4. Black now has a few moves but they all seem to promise a long endgame. Who is better at them? I think play may have gone 20....,Qg7; 21.Bxg8,Qxe5;22.Rf8+,Ne8; 23.dxe5 with an equal ending. Back to the game after 18.Bxh8,Qxh8; 19.Rf3,Qxb2 and after this Black seems to be winning.

So lets start. My name is Yannick, I'm 30 years old. Presently, I'm working toward a PhD in the field of image processing.
I've know the rules of chess for a long time, but only started playing 'seriously' a few years ago. I love the game of Kings for its endless possibilties, the thrill of a good game, and not least for the seemingly lack of luck in its outcome. My goal in chess, is to better my playing skills, and maybe one day to reach 2000 ELO.

My posting rights are still in abeyance; probably because I posted a quotation from MacAulay's "History of England" at a time when the officious webmaster didn't like off-topic posts.
Please put this on our forum page. I'm again obliged.

My name is Richard and live, after a fashion, in Glasgow, Scotland. I overrate my chess skills and am constantly reminded of the phrase: "pride cometh before a fall".

I work in an organisation that finds work for unemployed people; I'm over-worked and under-paid - who isn't?

I'm a godless man of intemperate nature and habits.

Yannick, you said you wanted an ELO of 2000. Good luck, so would I. I'm trying a little harder in my games hence my rating is gradually, if slowly, rising. One bad chess habit is I sometimes fail to overcome my natural indolence and make moves impulsively to avoid brain work; move in haste, repent at leisure.

Now, where did I put that Chablis?

Unfortunately I can't put much more time into team play (or into "games" in general) as I'm having a very busy time in my life these months. However, things *seem* to be getting slightly better and I hope I'll be able to show up more often in a few weeks or so.

Third team ladder

Message:
Hello, team!

Team situation (duh, that's not really important but I cannot resist) . We are currently ranked 43rd over some two hundred fifty teams... not bad guys!

About our team ladder. The first ladder ended a few weeks ago, and the second one is still running. I think it is now time to start the third one. So, please private message me in case of interest.

For a refresh, the ruley are as follows. First, the lowest rated player challenges the player just above them in the rating list. Then, the winner of this game challenges the next one in the list, and so on... Finally, the winner of the last match is also the winner of the ladder! Note that the lowest rated player always plays with the colour of their choice.

Cheers, and allez les fous,

IMPORTANT TEAM MESSAGE CONCERNING TIMEOUTS

Message:
Texte en français plus bas.

Our team is currently suffering a period of mass timeouts from several of our teammates. I'm well aware that timeouts cannot be controlled, since they are most likely caused by unexpected events (which I hope are not too dire). Accordinlgy, the team will *not* to expell the concerned players. However, those mass timeouts are having a severe toll on the whole team. So, I would like that each of us sets their maximal number of team games to 2 or 4 (through the menu 'preferences' on the left). This measure, I hope, will lessen the impact of unexpected events preventing to log on GK in time.

Cheers, and "allez les fous"

--Yannick

***

--Yannick

Team contests

Message:
Here are several suggestions to make the team life livelier. Please answer me, if you are interested in participating in any of the event.

*Brilliancy contest*, our teammate beholder28 proposes a brilliancy contest, where we have to vote for the most beautiful game. The interested players (hopefully everybody) should send me their most beautiful games (comments would be a plus) and I will post them on our forum when they will be all gathered.

*King of the mountain*, the rules are as follows. First, the lowest rated player challenges the player just above them in the rating list. Then, the winner of this game challenges the next one in the list, and so on... Finally, the winner of the last match is also the winner of the ladder! Note that the lowest rated player always plays with the colour of their choice. There was not enough interest last time. I really hope that this time around will be more successful!

*Open rating tournament*, what about an intra-team mini-tournament (with no rating limits)? We can also accommodate slow and fast players by setting up a slow (7+ days) tournament but also a fast (3- days) version. You tell your preferences.

Cheers,

Yannick

PS if you have others suggestions, please suggest them ;-)

A Chess Problem

Message:
Here is the first team contest. It is a game played by blatman in a competition some years ago... Since Richie feels that his games are not beautiful (?), he preferes to post it as a chess problem. Here is the position: Black has pawns on: h6, g7, f7, e6 and c5. King on h7. Bishop on e7. Rook on d8. Queen on f8. White has pawns on: a2, e4, f3, g2, h3. King on g1. Bishop on e3. Rook on a7. And Queen on c6 (White just moved the Queen here). Black to play. Richie proposes an imaginary pint of beer for those who see a decisive winning of material or 'mate if White gets it "wrong".

If you think to have the solution, please private message me and I will gather them and publish the solutions on the forum at the end of next week (so you've one week and a half)...

Cheers,

--Yannick

PS don't forget to tell me if you want to participate in the other team events (see forum)

Message:
The answer to blatman's problem has been found by beholder28...

The only answer came from beholder28:

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Hello, captain!
1...Rd1+ 2.Kf2 (2.Kh2? Qb8+ forks king and rook AND threatens mate on the 2nd rank if White answers 3.g3. If White covers with 3.Rc7 or 3.Qc7 instead, Black has 3...Bd6+, winning material) 2...Bh4+ 3.g3 Qb8 threatening ...Qxa7, or finally ...Qb2+ or Qxg3+ and a quick mate in both cases. After 4.gxh4 Black mates with 4...Qh2.
When can I have my beer?
