Message: .... for leading the team so well for so long - sure most of us have little idea how much time and effort is required but you have steered the GBH ship through some difficult times and with great distinction. Having correponded recently with the new Captain, I know the team is in very good and capable hands. Onwards and upwards from here ..... if only my opponents would move instead of postponing - I might yet again feel part of the deal!!!!

2/20/2006 13:04:11 [ report this post ] | League play for Teams
Message: Has league play for teams ever been set up on the site? If not, then it would be a lot of fun to implement such a concept. There would be leagues (for teams) with divisions, and teams could sign up to play in a division. When full, a table of matches with all teams play all as both black and white with each team having a certain no. of players per match with board position (both chosen by captain). Maybe prizes could be awarded to 1st, 2nd,.. place Teams at end. They have a similar concept on Chessworld.net. In addition, Teams (with admin approval) can set up matches with teams from other sites.
Just an idle thought.
Go GBH,
Ron

Message: i think with the current system of teams this is impossible as most play for fun and wouldnt accept some of the match ups. however i have always thought a four or five man team representing each team could do this. in league play you would be forced to play whoever challengs you and it would be a better judgement of the strength of teams.

2/22/2006 11:44:50 [ report this post ] | League Play for Teams
Message: I think it would be possible to orgainize an informal league of teams and use the GameKnot facility to set up and play matches, report results and communicate standings, etc. I would suggest perhaps a team of 4 players with 2 alternates. In each match the combined rating of the four active players in that match must be 7500 or less (choose your own number here - it could be 7000, it could be 8000, depends on what the league wants to set.) So the highest rated player on Team A plays the highest rated player on Team B a two game match, etc. 8 points available in each match, win = 1, draw = 0.5, loss = 0. Most points in the set of 8 games wins the match and gets one match point. If score ends 4-4, each gets 0.5. I suspect the players would want all games to run concurrently so as to avoid a tournament taking years to complete. At the end of all games, team with the most match points is the winner. If there are 8 or more teams, it would be possible to divide into divisions with the winner of each division meeting in a championship round.
All sounds very interesting so far, right. The catch is the organization and administration of the league. It will take someone with a lot of connections within the GameKnot network to find committted players and captains willing to take this on. (No insanity jokes here, please.) League commissioner would also be time consuming, but I would be willing to volunteer for that job. I just don't have the connections to start up such a thing. Volunteers, anyone.
I think it is a very interesting idea, Ron, and one that I have often thought about and wished for here at GameKnot. Hopefully, we can get some traction for this idea.

Message: the only thing i disagree with on your idea is the total rateing (if i understand you correctly that is) i say no rateing limits. thats the problem with the current team system. the current system is more of a casual , social type league. in the current system the overall rateing of a team may be 2000 as compared to a 1500 team. now when these teams play under the current system the 1500 team only sends its 2000 or above players thus causing the appearence on the record books the teams are evenly matched which isnt the case. so this is my opinion. 4-6 man teams like grandphish stated but with no limits. a team rated 2000 is probably better than a team rated 1500 and let he record show it. so if team (a) which includes 2200, 2150, 1983, and 1875 challenges team (b) which includes 2175, 1740, 1575, and 1330 all games would be matched accordingly to the closest pairing. of course the 1330 would not have much of a chance against the 1875 but thats the beauty of a REAL league. you play what you have. eventually the weaker teams would be put in a different bracket. also i think eventually teams would have players around the same rateing to better compete. for instance if the bounty hunters had a team in league play it might be grandphish, drron, julianlore, leo london and perhaps flyerguy and littlemissnaughty as backups. bottom line if a team is better we shouldnt pick and choose who plays them. let the best teams win. no dodging on challenges. i hope my explanation isnt too complicated. :)

2/22/2006 14:36:47 [ report this post ] | I wonder
Message: what other teams think ?
The present team table set-up is strange, its similar to a " ladder system " in some ways. There are teams with 3,4,5 members...others with up to 125.. like " The Fighting warriors ". When I started team play I used to avidly check the table positions every few days, then it dawned on me that it was all fairly meaningless as a guide to the performance of the team. I enjoy playing as part of a team, and always find pleasure in hearing that a team mate has won, but our " position " no longer bothers me...though I cant resist checking occasionally.
If there were a way to introduce a league, with like-minded teams, I would be interested. But, I already spend far too much time on here ( according to my wife )...I wonder how many others would wish to commit to extra games ?
I am taking it for granted that these would be " extra games " and that we would continue with the usual team games in the present set-up.

Message: good point. i suppose league team play would have to be a seperate issue or... team league games would be considered part of your overall team games. lots of issues on this. but to be a serious team league all teams would require a certain set number of players unlike the current system. if i had the time to keep up with it i would love to oversee a team league but i dont :( anyway after it got too large you would need an automated system to keep up with it anyway.

2/22/2006 15:54:36 [ report this post ] | Team tournament
Message: I think I must be missing the structure of the proposed team play. I am proposing a single tournament - not a ladder with challenges, etc. The tournament would be structured as a round robin among the participating teams. The teams would not have to be made up of subsets of current teams. You could create your team from anyone at GameKnot. While I agree that it would be nice to have no rating limit on a team, it would quickly become a battle to assemble the highest rated 6 players you could come up with. The purpose of the rating cap would be to create some parity among the teams so that it is competitive. Otherwise, it will become a battle to see who can get the 6 highest rated players to sign up for a team and it will not be competitive.
Bottom line-this would be like a minitournament, but each "player" would be a team and there would be a rating restriction similar to a 1600-2000 rating restriction in a minitournament.
I hope all this makes sense. I think it is an interesting concept. There are team tournaments run like this. The most notable one that I am aware of is the US Amateur Team Championships. Let's keep kicking it around and see what comes out the other side.
